I am TRYING to restore all my files from a Time Machine backup to a new hard drive. As if tHAT wasn't bad enough, now I an't get my files to transfer.
Where is the mysterious "Menu" for Time Machine?

Menu Bar Time Machine icon displays a Question mark - Problem and Fix
My MacBook over the weekend upon awakening from sleep showed that the Menu Bar Time Machine icon displays a Question mark. The external drive showed as mounted in the finder but repeated tries to Back up Now ended in Latest Backup Failed. Hmmm. Never saw that before. Did a restart and ran Disk Utility Verify Disk on the start up disk and it came out OK. So I then ran Disk Utility on the external FW backup drive and as soon as it reported that the FW disk was fine, Time Machine started up on it's own and did a back up and all is back to normal after leaving the TM drive attached the remainder of the weekend. All backups are back to working fine with no repeat of the problem.
If for some reason the computer has trouble communicating with the drive it will report a failure when TM tries to back up, and will display that question mark. It's good you were able to fix it and get TM running again.

I've been working on a newsletter and have the final version. But I wanted to check something in a verssion I did last week. If I choose the day in Time Machine, is there any way I can view that document without "restoring" it to replace the final version?
You can drag and drop a file from TM to the desktop.
Let's say your newsletter is on the desktop. First thing to do is to add something to the file name, say Newsletter_1.
Next open TM as if it is just another external drive by double clicking the icon. (This is not the same as "Enter Time Machine" which you do when you want to restore.) The file hierachy in TM follows the same logic as on your hard drive. Navigate to the date you want, find the file you want, and drag and drop it where you want it to be. Because you changed the name of the most recent version you can both files in the same space.
I do this often.
But remember if you make a back up now you will end up with both versions in TM. -
Where is email stored in Time Machine backups?
Just had my computer stolen. I have backups on Time Machine via Time Capsule and want to share my wife's computer until we can buy a new one. So, I want to get my email from the backup and move it to her computer, without doing a total restore of everything else that was on my machine. The problem is, when I go in to the backups, I can't find where Mail is stored. On a mac, I know how to find it by clicking on Option while in the GO menu. This makes Library appear as an option in the Go menu. Without doing this, however, Library is hidden, and it is within this Library that Mail is stored. There is no way to do within the backups because there is no Go Menu in Time Machine - just on the Mac itself. How can I retrieve all of my email from a Time Machine/Time Capsule backup and move it to the other Mac (which uses the same Time Capsule)?

What is the status of time machine not working with yosemite?
I upgraded mu mac pro to yosemite and since have found time machine does not work.
Also, my old backup via a clikfree wireless backup does not work any longer.
Is anyone working on this issue?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

MaxxReboot the TC.. it sometimes gets lost on the network.. are you still actually using 10.6.8 as the problem is more prevalent on Lion and ML it seems is no better.
You might find reset of the TC is needed. change the names to short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.
Reset the TM to the new name.. use the A4 in Pondini's great KB.

Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule?
Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule via the USB port? My current Time Machine has a total capacity of 1TB. I'd like to double or triple its memory. I don't want to use the external hard drive in lieu of the Time Capsule hard drive. I'd like to use it in addition to. Just don't know if/how it's possible.
This is another one of those questions that I've searched the web for answers, and have gotten tricky answers back. So now I'm trying to introduce a clean slate to the mix.
Thank you for your time!Well, what you mentioning is possible. However, I don't know whether it's supported (as in, "easy to set up."). Time Machine officially supports backing up to a locally attached drive, to a machine running a Time Machine server (i.e. running OS X Server software), and to a Time Capsule. I don't know that it officially supports a drive attached to an AirPort or to a Time Capsule. Though I know some people have gotten it to work.
Best I can say is to try it. Plug the drive into the Time Capsule, ensure it's shared on the network, and then try and set it as a backup target from a machine in the Time Machine backup panel (you'll need to ensure it's mounted first). If it works, you're all set. -

Reboot the TC.. restart the whole network if the simple reboot did not work.. start in order. modem.. router/TC.. clients. 2min gap.

What makes the color of the icon for my external hard drive change to the color of the icon for Time Machine?
Perhaps when you first connected the drive you were asked if you wanted this to be used for TM. If you clicked yes it remembers that.

I want to schedule my back ups to my Western Digital Elements HDD so that it doesn't interfere with my Skype calls with clients. Operating system - version 10.7.4. The default for Time Machine is to back up every 1 hour. I'd like daily at 3am. Any ideas?
