I installed new hard drive and I am trying to restore from time machine external back up. I restarted the computer and held the Command key and the R and the restore utility does not appear. what can I do

Command + R keys are for Macbooks running Lion and Mountian Lion only. ( i could be wrong on this)
you have a couple of options:
Do a clean install of Snow Leopard via Install DVD.
Clone your old hard drive to your new hard drive via Carbon Copy Cloner
Or click on the link below to give you a better idea.
Hope you get it sorted out.

  • How does one do updates when your service provider is s-l-o-w??                     According to the counter, our computer needs almost 20 hrs. of updates, is there a way to pick and choose which ones are downloaded?

We have a "Rocket Hub" and our download times vary greatly.  My husband's computer, Snow Leopard OS, shows he has about 20 hrs. of updates to download.  Is there a way to pick and choose so we can catch up?

Nope, because files sizes, machines, software installed are different and you can't control what needs to be installed first before others work.
Apple is all Internet, you should see Lion users, they can't reinstall their OS at all without a Internet connection. (or pay $69 for the Lion USB key) and then there still the updates to deal with.
So take a ride, to a Apple Store early in the morning before their network gets overloaded (what a way to get you in the door and buy more junk uh?) fully update to 10.6.8.
Good thing about Snow Leopard, not much more in large updates coming for that verision, in fact they will stop completely come next spring or so when 10.8 is released.
Unless you live in a wealthy area with broadband, your a nobody in Apple's viewpoint.
You could get a 3G laptop connect card, hopefully that will give you enough to download your updates but they cost a fortune.
If I could just provide you with update disk I would, but I can't, machines are different.
Call Apple and ask for a update disk, perhaps they have a solution
Once you do get all your updates, Carbon Copy Clone your boot drive to a external drive, it's hold the option key bootable duplicate.
    Donationware too.

  • Mail and Safari Crash after Full Restore with Time Machine

I did a complete restore with time Machine. I opened Mail and it did it's thing importing all the mail and creating it's new index and folders. Now Mail and Safari will not work. They crash every time I open them.
They were working fine, the only reason I did the restore was I inadvertently formated my hard drive while trying to install boot camp.
Anyone have any idea what to do?
    Mario

I have exactly the same problem as iGin. All other programs appear to be behaving normally, just Apple Mail and Safari crash immediately after starting them up - very annoying!

  • HT201250 how can I check that all photos have been backed up in time machine

I have used Time Machine for the first time to back up my Macbook Air. Macbook Air's iPhoto shows approx 5200 pictures on file.
How can I check that the external hard drive (Time Machine) has all 5200 saved correctly before deleting the photos from the Macbook Air ?

The only way to check a back up is to do a restore of it.
However, why are you deleting your photos from the MBA? If you do they will also be deleted from Time Machine eventually. TM keeps a rolling back up of your machine. It copies and maintains your additions and deletions. Eventually, these photos will be deleted from TM too. It's not an archiving app.

  • Choosing which backups to "reuse" in Time Machine?

I am using an external 500 Gb hard drive to back up my Macbook via Time Machine.
I just replaced the Macbook's motherboard for the second time (making it the third board for this Macbook, including the original). When I replaced the original board (this was before snowleopard), I created a new backup set on the same hard drive. So there are two sets of backups for my Macbook, one called "mike" (linked to the original motherboard) and another called "mike 2" (linked to the second motherboard).
I now have snowleopard, which allows you to "reuse" previous backups. With the third motherboard installed and the "reuse" option checked, TM tries to backup to "mike". But because I have not been using "mike" since I replaced the first motherboard in 2008, there is a lot to back up. There is not enough room on the hard disk for that. However, if I could get TM to use "mike 2", the most current set (which I've been using since I installed the second motherboard), there would be plenty of room on the hard disk.
How do I tell TM which backup set to use? Alternatively, how do I delete "mike"? I tried deleting it as root, but I get "not allowed" (which I find extremely annoying, btw).

That's correct. You should never change, move, or delete anything in your backups except via TM, as that can hopelessly corrupt them. That's why TM uses special "deny everybody everything" permissions on them.
The problem is, the first set of backups are "abandoned." TM won't delete any of those backups when it needs room for new ones, since it thinks they're for a different Mac.
You have two options, both unattractive:
Manually delete all the backups in the old set, one at a time, per #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Erase the TM drive with Disk Utility and let TM start fresh.

  • Safari 4, which flash and java related files to restore with time machine?

As is evident in the thread I already posted to on the BBC Iplayer and on others below the 'official' software update of Safari 4 has caused javascript/flash issues systemically (ie that affect Firefox too.)
Can anyone list the relevant files that I should look to restore one by one in time machine in order to get back flash/javascript functionality?
I am sure other people would find this helpful and have therefore started a new topic.

I shut Safari 4's Java and plug-ins off (not JavaScript) and the problem with some sites (mostly ad content and other trouble-causers, one is certainly BrightCove) has disappeared.

  • Can't get past white loading a screen after restoring from time machine backup

I am aware there are others threads of my problem however they date back years ago and after trying their solutions it still does not work.
After using Time Machine to restore my hard drive from a backup, I can't get past the white loading screen with apple logo after system restart during restore process. Ive gone into disk utility and repaired hard drive - it's fine. So I know this is a software glitch. I've also tried resetting SMC & PRAM (whatever those mean). No success and i cannot get past the white loading screen.
I'm running Mavericks (latest) on a late 2009 iMac. Thank you!

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • Some software updates pertain to things that I would  never need.  Is it okay to "pick and choose" which software updates we install?

I am not computer savvy, so bare with me.  I have OSX Lion 10.7.5.  I only use it to surf and for photos.  I keep getting reminders that software updates are ready to install.  And for months and months I have continued to ignore them because their explanations seem to tell me they are not things I would ever want or need.  I see no reason to take up space on my computer for things that I have no intention of  using.  (Yes, I am a "mature" person).  The updates are for Remote Desktop Client; Migration Assistant for Lion migrating to Maverick??; Airport Utility and i-Tunes.  I also keep coming across in blogs and articles about upgrading from Lion to some other new app or software called Yosemite and I don't know if that is something I need to do?  Thanks to anyone who can answer my questions.

You have the ability to 'hide' updates, which is what I do when OS X wants to update or install drivers for printers/cameras I don't have. That way it won't keep notifying you of updates you don't want. Either use the menu bar at the top, or right-click the update and click on Hide Update.
Yosemite is the newest version of OS X, which is the operating system for your Mac. Yosemite is more secure, and runs a bit faster than Lion on my iMac, although it looks a bit different. Check out http://www.apple.com/osx/ to learn if you want to upgrade or not. It's a free download from Apple.

  • Why can't I cut and edit a track anymore without Flex Time activating by itself?

Everytime I try to cut a track Flex Time activates itself. It's like I am forced to use Flex Time even though I don't want to. If I unticked Flex Time, it keeps activates itself no matter what. This garageBand 11 is just horrible. I wanna go back to the old one

  • I am out of space on my Macbook Air and have a Time Machine Backup. I want to complete reset my mac, but wonder if I can pick and choose what I restore to my computer? Can I also use my time machine backup and external storage as well?

I am out of space on my Macbook Air and have a Time Machine Backup. I want to complete reset my mac, but wonder if I can pick and choose what I restore to my computer? Can I also use my time machine backup as external storage as well for the files I don't need everyday?

If you are using "Restore from Time Machine Backup" option from OS X Recovery, you can only choose from the broad categories presented.
... Can I also use my time machine backup as external storage as well for the files I don't need everyday?
To be clear, if you are asking if you can use the volume containing your Time Machine backup to store additional, non-Time Machine files, the short answer is yes.
It's not a good idea though, since the Time Machine backup will eventually fill all available space, after which it begins to remove old, "expired" backups to make room for newer ones. The presence of additional files doesn't change that fact, and Time Machine will not erase them, but you will encounter a dilemma should you want to store additional files on that volume when there is no remaining space. You will have to make room for them on your own, by deleting existing files. Furthermore, since Time Machine cannot back up its own volume, those additional files will not be backed up by Time Machine.
The easy solution for what you describe is to purchase additional external storage. External USB hard disk drives have become very inexpensive; about $55 will buy a perfectly suitable 1 TB drive.
You can also choose to replace your MacBook Air's internal storage with a larger capacity one. Look for a suitable replacement from OWC / MacSales:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Air-Retina
That gets a little more expensive but it is the optimum solution.
