HT201250 Why can't I re-open Time Machine?

Why can't I re-open Time Machine? Created first (ever) back-up, but with reopening get error code -6584, an unexpected error, but what error? In syspref everything seems to be pointing OK to my Apple Time Capsule, hmmmmm...????

See Pondini's TM FAQs, for starters.

How can I exclude mail from Time Machine backups?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Mails are stored on ~/Library/Mail, being ~ your user folder. As you are running Snow Leopard, it's easy to exclude your mails from your Time Machine backup.
Open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and add ~/Library/Mail to excluded items, so the next backup won't include mails. Note that you have to go to your user folder, in order to access to this directory

  • HT201250 How can I restore files using Time Machine to a new external drive?

I need to restore all the files on a failed hard drive—upwards of a terabyte of data. How can I instruct Time Machine to copy the files to a new external hard drive? Thanks!

Hold down the option key and select
              Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar. The menu icon looks like a clock running backwards. If you don't have that menu, open the Time Machine preference pane and check the box marked

  • Why can't we backup (with Time Machine) our Airport hosted 1TB HD from our iMac (hosting a 2TB HD)?

With an iMac (one year old), we are using Time Machine to backup the iMac and one small external HD to a 2TB HD (USB). The iMac is on a small wired network along with an Airport Extreme hosting a 1TB HD for shared iPhoto Libraries, 2 printers and a recent MacBook Pro (backed up to another 1TB HD). Time Machine is doing a fine job of backing up the iMac and its small external HD (80GB), but we cannot seem to cause it to backup the Photo Libraries HD. Why not? The Photo Libraries HD is automounted to the desktops of both the iMac and the MacBook Pro. What do we need to do?

No, sorry.  The Airport Extreme can't do backups;  only OSX on your Mac.

  • Why can't I select previous Time Machine Backups?

I'm running 10.7.5 on a 2010 Macbook Pro and, as of a few hours ago, I can no longer select previous back ups in Time Machine in order to delete entire back ups or single files. Can someone help me here? My ext HD is full and I want to create some space on it since Time Machine doesn't seem to be doing it automatically.
    Thanks!

    Hey Anania!

  • HT201250 How can I verify that the time machine has backed up all the files on my macbook pro?

Does someone have experience with the question I have raised on Time machine?

I use the Time Machine Buddy widget. It shows the log files or you could look in the Console and spotlight for Time Machine.

  • Why can't i restore from time machine

I had a hard drive fail (the system drive), and the Apple store was able to load a new system onto a second drive.  When I went to restore the whole enchilada from Time Machine, nothing appears to be in time machine - I'm running 10.6.8

Actually, if you want to restore everything, see Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14.

  • Why can't I start the Time Machine Application?

This is the first time I tried to restore files using time machine.  But there is a question mark over the Time Machine Icon.  When I click on it nothing happens at all.  I cannot start Time Machine.  The HD was connected and I backed up some files just a few minutes ago.
    Would appreciate some help.

Look in the Applications folder for the Time Machine application. If you don't find it there, then do a Spotlight search for it in case you moved it.

Look in the Utility folder which is located inside the Applications folder.
You don't want to do anything with the disk on a PC if you want it to work on the Mac. They both use different formats.

  • Why can't other computers open my photos from Iphoto or down load them? they don't show up as an icon.

Why can't other computers open and/or download my photos when I email themfrom IPhoto? Have also tried making it a separate file on my desk; to no avail.
It shows as an icon and jpeg when it goes out from my computer but they can't download it.
They might see the photo imbedded in the emil but it doesn't appear as a downloadable icon.
    Thank you for your help.

I think I can help. I use Mac but my secretary uses PC.
Make a file on your desktop and name it "test"
Go to iPhoto and click on a photo to send to this folder
Go to file and choose "export"
Pop up window - Kind: jpeg
    quality: maximum
    size: full
click on export and choose the "test" folder you created on the desktop.
You can now send any jpeg that you put in this folder from an email account by "attaching file" from within the email. If you have more than one jpeg, right click on the folder and choose "compress file"

Why can I no longer open or save files using office for mac?

Go to the Apple Menu (top left) click the Apple Menu and select "About This Mac"
That will result in this window:
The version number is right underneath Mac OSX.
Then I will need to know which version of Office (Word) which you will see on the splash screen when you start it.

You may be able to drag and drop the icons from one toolbar onto another, you can then hide the toolbar that you no longer need. For details on how to do that see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/How+to+customize+the+toolbar
