HT201250 wireless backup using time capsule

my first back is taking much more time than expected. Notes do say that the first back up wull take some time, which is expected. BUT over the last 48 hours it has only backed up 3.4 GB out of a measured 80 GB. The math says someting is very wrong with the duration. Or is it? Can anyone give some clues. Simply, all I have done is set the backup disk and started the backup and the left the device alone. The wireless connection is strong (signal) but the external HDD sounds like it is constantly in "pain". Always been like it.

It's much better (2-3 times faster and more reliable) to do the initlal backup via Ethernet.
If it's only done 3.4 GB in 2 days, something is terribly wrong.  You might want to cancel the backup, connect via Ethernet, and start over.
See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #29 for a rough guide to how fast it should run.
If it's considerably slower, try the things in the green box in #D2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Wireless Printing using Time Capsule

I tried to print wirelessly but I keep getting the message: There is a problem communicating with the printer. What am I not doing?

I have had similar difficulties trying to get my HP 460wbt to connect wirelessly to the Time Capsule. It works fine if you take off any wi-fi security (a useful thing to check compatability but probably not wise to leve the network open!).
I previously used an Airport base station and though I had some initial difficulties I did manage to use WEP security on that and it worked faultlessly with any computer attached to my network including Windows XP via Parallels. HOWEVER, I couldn't get WEP to work with the Time Capsule and printer (it worked with the computers) and WPA/WPA2 is I suspect not compatible with WPA_psk (or at least I can't figure this one out!).
The conclusion then is that the wireless card/software security for the printer isn't going to work with the Time Capsule - a pity and rather odd since there is a work round with the Airport base which is at least 5 years old! Why do Apple not make such issues backwards compatible I wonder?
I have solved the problem temporarily by having BOTH the Time capsule and Airport base connected wirelessly - which means a one click change of wireless network to print - but hey-ho it works until I find another solution. Any ideas?

  • Custom backup using time capsule

Just wondering how I can back up my applications on my laptop using Time Capsule? Can I drag and drop my applications folder into Time Capsule or are there other files buried in the system folder? I don't have all the install discs for all of my programs, they mysteriously disappeared after moving to my new apartment. I'm not referring to preloaded software that came with my macbook because I can use the discs that came with the laptop...I'm referring to photoshop, video converter apps, toast, ect. Thank you in advance for those who reply.

adam, Welcome to the discussion area!
You can drag and drop the applications to the Time Capsule for backup. However many times the licensing information will not be preserved.
A safer bet is to allow Time Machine to backup the applications.

  • Wireless Backup w/ time capsule

I was thinking about getting time capsule. I do have a question about wireless backup though. I travel a lot and I wondered if I were to leave my time capsule at my house and travel out of town will I still be able to backup things on the time capsule via other methods.
Is it possible to backup files via the airport feature. Like using the airport on my cpu to connect to the internet to backup files onto my time capsule at home which is also connected to the internet through airport.
I hope that this makes sense. Any advice is good advice. Thanks again.

Good question. In theory, this should be possible. In practice - and whether TimeMachine will be designed to support it - we really don't know. A definitive answer will have to wait until Time Capsule ships and we have more information.
There is one other issue - which is that Time Capsule's public IP address may change from day to day (which is typical of the dynamic IP addresses provided by most ISPs). Unless you keep a computer on your home LAN running 24/7 with an update client for a service like http://www.dyndns.com/ , or you put Time Capsule behind a separate internet router with a built in dyndns update client, you won't know what IP address to reach Time Capsule at while you are on the road.
In practise, it might be easier and more convenient to backup to something like a .Mac account while you are on the road.

  • Can you wirelessly backup using Time Machine?

If I get the Time Machine will I be able to backup wirelessly through the wifi network???
    Apple CEO

Time Capsule TC = hardware router and hard disk designed to work with Time Machine.
Time Machine TM = software in the computer designed to run background backup.
What you buy is a Time Capsule..
And yes, that is the whole point of the TC..
Its fundamental design is a backup device for laptops over wireless so they do not need to be plugged in to do backups.
You are using it exactly for the intended use.

  • Wireless backup without time capsule

I want to backup my Mac wirelessly to an external hard drive (a seagate) connected to my linksys router via the USB port. Time Machine does not recognize the drive; it appears as if Apple is forcing it's customers to buy time capsule even though it may be redundant and otherwise unnecessary. Is there a way for me to wirelessly backup my Mac without buying Time Capsule? Thanks.

You can use your hard drive, try using disk utility on it to repair the drive and permissions.  Note: The hard drive your are trying to use must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Check this link, http://www.macworld.com/article/132140/2008/02/timemachine2.html

  • Wireless backup to Time Capsule too slow?

    Hi to all,
I have a working wi-fi network: a 500gb time capsule + 2 airport express (the old b/g model); the capsule is WDS main, each express is a remote wds.
*normal network file transfers run at acceptable speed*, however time machine has a lot of problems:
    (1) the first backup ~80gb was made via 1Gb ethernet in a few hours -- perfect
    (2) incremental backups take a VEEERY long time to do... basically nothing. here's a log: 40 minutes to transfer 1KB!

    (3) time machine is indeed very fragile. if I put the computer to sleep while t.m. is running, the next time I read this in console:
    Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUntrustable|
and it takes 4 or 5 hours to backup few MB
in this case, network activity is high: it seems that macbook is downloading a lot from time capsule... anyway it stays a lot of time in "preparing backup", and even when it starts backup, it backs up soooo slowly.
    here's what I tried:
    (1) format time capsule and restart
    (2) erase spotlight index in macbook, reindex everything with time machine off, then reactivate spotlight
    (3) turned off wds remotes and connected directly to time capsule
    any other hint?
    thanks, MH

Here's a new conjecture: TM via ethernet works smoothly.
May this be related to wi-fi encryption (I use WPA2)?

  • I have a m2007 macbook connected to my wireless network using time capsule.  I stream video to the macbook, but often get start stop of the streaming, but no wheel to indicate a buffering issue.  Can I resolve this with higher speed internet and cable mod

I'm wondering if my cable internet is too slow for wireless streaming of videos to other macbooks.  Any help will be appreciated

Can you clarify whether you are asking about video that you are streaming from the Internet to your Mac through the Time Capsule?
Or, are you asking about streaming video that is already stored on the Time Capsule to your Mac?
In either case, what happens....video quality wise..... if you test by temporarily turning off the wirelss on the Mac and then connecting it to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule using a spare Ethernet cable for a few hours?

  • Extending an existing wireless network using Time Capsule

I connected my Time Capsule via Ethernet cable to my network. I used the airport utility to extend my existing wireless network (Cisco router)k. After that my wireless devices were disconnected and I got a message stating "Unable to join wireless network". The macbook that I used to set up the Time Capsule showed a message along the lines that a device on the network was trying to use the macbook's IP address, I changed the macbooks IP address and then was able to connect my ipad and iphone to the wireless network but the connection was unusable as it was so slow. has anyone done this successfully and if so do you have nay advice

If you connect the TC to the network by ethernet you do not extend an existing networking.. indeed you cannot.. only works with apple routers and no ethernet.
You create a wireless network.. you can use roaming .. ie use the same wireless name and security settings as the existing Cisco router but you must set different channels.
If you need instructions in that setup what version airport utility are you using. I would strongly recommend a version 5.. it is so superior cf toyland v6.

  • Extending wireless network using Time Capsule

    Hi guys,
I have been trying to sort this issue out for some time.
Basically I have a Thompson Wireless Router which connects to my ISP, this is downstairs broadcasting a wireless network to my house.
I want to put the Time Capsule upstairs, to extend the WLAN and also connect my Xbox over Ethernet.
No matter what I try I cannot get it to work, it ends up setting up 2 WLANs where the Thomson WLAN works (as there is an ISP connection) and the TC wont (as its not connected)
What I want is for the Thomson WLAN to be extended via the TC to allow my Xbox on to Live...
I also have a Mac Mini upstairs that would connect either via the TC WLAN or through ethernet.
Any help you can offer would be amazing
    Thanks
    Adam

If you are trying to "extend" the wireless signal from the Thompson router through the Time Capsule using wireless only, this is probably not going to work.
The reason for this is that Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature appears to be a proprietary technology that works only among other Apple devices. For that reason, it is highly unlikely that the Thompson router and Time Capsule would be compatible for the purpose that you desire.
If you are able to connect the Time Capsule to the Thompson router using an Ethernet connection, you could configure the Time Capsule to "create a wireless network" using the exact same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Thompson network. In addition, the Time Capsule must be configured as a "bridge" in Bridge Mode for this to work correctly.
If you cannot run the Ethernet cable,  you might want to look at a pair of Etherent powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by sending the Ethernet signal over the existing AC powerlines in your home.

  • Upgraded my 2010 macbook pro to mountain lion, unable to complete time machine backup using time capsule.  Getting error 112

Upgraded macbook pro to mountain lion, get the following message
"the backup disk image "......." could not be accessed (error 112)
I've tried many of the suggestions from other discussion threads, still unable to get anything to work.  Have 4 other computers backing up to the same time capsule, all of them are functioning normally, however they are not upgraded to mountain lion.
    Suggestions?

This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including your exclusion list. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy it to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot, recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane, and run a backup to test. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.

  • Can i do wireless backup without time capsule

With Time Machine, no. With third-party software, maybe, but it will be inefficient.

  • Kernel panic with wifi backup to Time Capsule

I have had no problem with wireless backup to Time Capsule until recently when I would consistently get a kernel panic during the backup. Is it a corrupt file? How would I isolate it? Or could it be a directory problem that DiskWarrior would fix? I can mount the backup image on my desktop OK.
I suppose I could erase my backup image on the Time Capsule, but I dont want to lose all that data. And if I did, what is the best way to archive that TIme Capsule backup image?
    Thanks for any help.

First, Repair your backups per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If that doesn't help, here's a bunch of kernel panic info:
Apple Support - About kernel panic messages
Mac OS X Kernel Panic FAQ
The X Lab - Resolving Kernel Panics
Apple Developer - Technical Note TN2063: Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics
Tutorial: Avoiding and eliminating Kernel panics
I suppose I could erase my backup image on the Time Capsule, but I dont want to lose all that data. And if I did, what is the best way to archive that TIme Capsule backup image?
If your backups are ok, erasing the drive probably won't help. But to "archive" the backups, see this Apple article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1281

  • Cisco Wireless Cable Modem & Time Capsule

    Hi,
I am having problem extending the cisco wireless modem using time capsule.
    1) I am trying to wireless extend the range in time capsule but it hit error like "can't extend this wireless".
    2) Since I hit error in 1), I try the Join wirelss setup. I can successfull join the wireless network but I could not use the ethernet port.
    Any advise, please.

If you have not already done so, perform a Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule (TC) to get it back to a known state.
Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
Then before you hook up the Time Capsule, make sure that the Ethernet port is working correctly on the AirPort Express (AX) by connecting a laptop to the Ethernet connection. Turn off the wireless on the laptop and see if you can get an Internet connection. If you can, the AX and the Ethernet port are working correctly.
Connect an Ethernet cable from the AX to the WAN port (circle of dots or world icon) on the TC
Open AirPort Utility, select the TC, and click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab below the icons to assign a name to the TC, device password and adjust Time Zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the Cisco network if you want more coverage under that name
Check mark next to Allow this network to be extended
    Radio Mode = Auto
    Channel = Auto
Wireless Security = Exact same setting that the Cisco network is using...if you want more coverage...etc.
Wireless Password + Same password as the Cisco network
    Confirm Password
Click the Intenet icon, then the Internet Connection Tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings, wait a minute or two, then power off the entire network and restart again, starting with modem, then Cisco, then AX, then TC, then other devices.
If you want the TC to provide a different wireless network than the Cisco, then assign a different name to the Wireless Network Name on the TC.

  • Using time capsule model A1409 and trying to use it as only backup. Already have Verizon wireless router. Do not know which cable port to use in back of time capsule. And also it is asking for password. Have tried all of mine and it will not work.

Want to us my time capsule model A1409  as only backup. 2 TB hard drive.
Already have Verizon wireless router. Do not want to use Time capsule as router, only back up for iMac.
Do not know which cable port to use in back of time capsule to Ethernet port back of my iMac.
And also it is asking for password for the server John Garland's Time Capsule so Time machine can access it..
Have tried all of passwords can think of and none work.
Held the reset button for one second on back of capsule and do not see if anything happened.
    What a conundrum.
Appreciate any help to get this working.
    Thanks,
    John R

I have a 2TB Timecapsule and really only use it for Time Machine backups. But the Wi-Fi side is used to sync my iPad at times.
    Mine is wiredup thus;
Eth cable from iMac to modem (not the WAN port should you have one),  then eth cable from modem to T/Cap in the WAN port (bottom port with an O sign above it)
I believe when its connected up you may have to set up a wireless network. Follow the instructions to set up Wi-Fi and Network
and then give it a password. The WiFi icon should appear in the menu bar where you can switch it on or off.
Its been sometime since I set it with the help of Apple Techs so I might be a bit rusty.
