HT201262 No start up after software update?
I have been unable to restart me computer after a software update (White screen/apple logo/spinning wheel continuously). I have tried to start up in safe mode (holding down shift key) but it hasn't worked. Any ideas?
Thanks
General advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL170
And for Intel Macs here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL172
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.4.11 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

System won't start up after Software Update problem
I turned on the computer and ran Software Update. iTunes and others successfully updated, but there was a problem with the Quicktime update. The system required a restart to complete installations, so I did. The circle of lines was running around and around, but then blank screen and frozen cursor. I attempted to power down and restart, but to no avail. I restarted holding the Shift key and it loads up. I repaired priveledges and restarted. Still will not start up. Please, help me.
You say that "it loads up" when you start with the shift key down. I assume that you mean the system boots up okay. If so, you are successfully starting up with a Safe Boot.
According to Apple's KB article on What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?, the Safe Boot is doing the following:
- It forces a directory check of the startup volume.
- It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).
- It runs only Apple-installed startup items (some of the items in /Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems).
The main goal of the Safe Boot is to repair the disk (filesystem) and to disable a variety of 3rd party extensions and startup items in the 3 folders listed here. Since you cannot startup normally after the Safe Boot, it seems that the disk repair did not fix the problem. So, most likely, you have some item in one of the 3 folders that is causing you trouble. Sometimes a 3rd party item is not compatible with an Apple upgrade and startup problems can occur after the upgrade.
So, a troubleshooting strategy would be to start back up in Safe Mode and then to inspect these folder for some item that looks suspicious to you. One approach is to look at 3rd party items that have been recently installed. If you find something that you suspect, drag it onto the desktop and then try to restart normally. If you are able to reboot normally, you have found the problem.
I hope this helps. -
Won't start up after software update
I have a PB G4 titanium 1ghz running 10.4.11. Just ran the latest software update which installed the latest security update, iTunes and QuickTime. At the end of the process the screen went black so I powered down by holding down the power button. Tried to restart and it just sticks on the grey apple screen.
Because of the common issues with the optical drive on these pb's I can't run anything off a disc to get it going. Don't have a bootable hard drive either. Feeling a bit stuck so wondered if anyone has any ideas for me.Tough without the Tiger Disk problems, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup. Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
(SPACE between fsck AND -fy important)
3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message: *** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *** Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.

Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more. -

iPhone went bad after software update - iPhone 5 is now stuck on Itunes connect and has vertical lines.
I found a video on youtube with similar issues - http://youtu.be/Xuuqxx18-bA
EVERYTHING HAS BEEN TRIED: Restore, Reboot, Recycle, Replacing Cables, etc....
I don't have Apple Care, what to do? Spend more money and buy a new phone? Here is another person who has a problem with the iPhone 5 screen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc1ZPWSA8dc and they have just received them NEW!!!!!
I myself, two days ago purchased a 2nd hand iPhone 5 that was advertised as having a line of squares at the bottom of the screen. I Googled it and found people saying it was a screen issue and to replace the screen, so I did this and it is still happening with a new screen.
I am starting to dislike Apple intensely after reading forum posts and watching videos where people are asking for help and telling us about issues that they are having with their phones.
Why is Apple getting it so wrong with their updates and manufacturing that they are completely destroying iPhones that cost a lot of money and then expecting the owner to purchase another phone unless they are still in warranty.
Apple you should be going out of your way to put things right for people but instead there is a wall of silence over so many of the issues destroying peoples phones.

iftekharHey iftekhar,
Welcome to the BlackBerry® Support Community Forums.
I would suggest backing up doing a clean reload of the BlackBerry® device software as shown here: http://btsc.webapps.blackberry.com/btsc/KB11320. Please test before restoring any data to the device.
If this resolves the issue do a selective restore of essential data (Address Book, Calendar, Task, Memos, BBM contacts etc.)

Mac will not start up after software up date, just screen with Apple logo and spinning icon? I have tried safe start up, unplugged all other cables, no luck?
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -

I'm surprized for what happened as I had a discussion last night with my father regarding Nokia trust relation ship .
Please advice how can I solve my issues ASAP.

Freeze during start-up following software update.
Hello everyone-
I would be so grateful if anybody can offer any help on this situation.
Software update helpfully popped up today with two suggested updates;
1) An itunes update to allow to use the new apple tv etc ?which version
2) An OS update, which had something to do with powerpc in the title, and i assume is 10.4.11
I ran these, and the itunes one seemed to go okay (at least the green tick box appeared in software update.)
Subsequently, though, I opened itunes (or tried to) and got a message that said itunes needed at least os10.4.9 to now work.
I tried to open 'About this mac' to find out which version I was upgrading from, and insted received the 'select user' login screen.
Thinking I had perhaps accidentally selected 'logout user' I went back in and the same thing occurred.
The computer then crashed - went to blue screen and became unresponsive.
I restarted, and now what happens is I get the grey screen with the apple, then the blue screen with the box saying 'Mac OS X' and the apple and the bar that should go blue, but it seems to freeze on this screen (with bar not even beginning to turn blue) and the spinning rainbow umbrella. This has been like this for about an hour now, so I don't think anything is happening.
(I've also tried to boot into safe mood - by holding down shift - to no avail.)
Reading through the posts, it seems problems after software update aren't too uncommon, but I'm a little unsure of how best to proceed as I don't have the start up disks for this computer and it - as ever - contains a lot of valuable information to me.
Questions, then:
1) How best to attempt to recover the data from the broken powerbook? I have a macbook pro at home with enough disk space to back up everything on here, but what is the best way to do this? I don't want to use this information whilst on the macbook pro as such, just put it there (via firewire target mode) whilst I hopefully fix the powerbook. is there an automated way to do this?
2)I do have the install disks from the macbook pro here, which are 10.4.9. Can I try to sue these on the powerbook, or would that be a bad idea as the hardware is different?
3)Any other suggestiosn/things to try with the powerbook?
Thank you so very much for any help you can give!
All best wishes,
SimonHello-
Sorry this has taken so long.
I managed to transfer all files via firewire target mode, and have now (finally) located the discs that came with the computer.
I have used these to run disk utility and repair disk and permissions? Permissions seemed to fix loads of stuff.
But it still won't start.
Am I right that I now need to do an 'archive and install'. (When i get to the 'select destination disk' screen, the HD has a yellow warning triangle over it, which reminds me that the OS I am installing (10.4.?1) is older than the (non-fucntioning) current one 10.4.11.
(Also, I read elsewhere about simply installing the fixed combo update fropm apple, but I suspect I need to be able to get the machine to boot to do this - can't work out ho0w to do this whilst running install disks, though maybe from a USB memory pen?)
If I do archive and install, what becomes of:
a) Proprietory software which had to be activated online via a code. (I use a programme called 'Final Draft' and it comes with only two logins. I'm pretty sure I used one on an old computer. My question then is if I do archive and install is it likely I will lose the old access? (I suspect so! And wonder if this also goes for Word?)
b) itunes and purchased music (I think I am actually about up to machine number five on some of these songs...)
As ever, thanks so much to anyone for any help you can offer.

Problem restarting after software update
Computer is fine, drive 40% full, no speed problems...
But it just won't restart after software update runs, nor will it restart or shut down from finder.
Problem solving so far: Safe boot, reset pram, ran disk utility, ran disk repair using install disk, ran fsck -y, ran disk warrior.
Is annoying. ANy ideas anyone? If not, what is the procedure for updating using sudate and terminal, as when I use software update, a force shut down will not install.

N97, issues still unresolved after software update
I was happy to see the latest software update from Nokia for N97 hoping it would have solved the issues but I was very disappointed experiencing the same problems that I was getting before and worst part was new problems have also
been experienced.
Old problem which is still not solved
It is still impossible to get the phone working if it switches off by battery getting fully drained. The battery doesn't start
charging even if you put the phone in charging for 24 hours. The charging light blinks but the phone doesnt charge.
New problem after software update
Even if the phone is put on charge for 24 hours, it doesnt get fully charged. Infact the battery indicator doesn't climb up after 2 points and after using the phone for a small time, it says battery discharged and phone switches off.
I have always been stuck to Nokia phones since I've started using handphones but am having the worst experience with
this N97. God knows when the Nokia people will wake up and provide a final solution to this.Try pulling the battery and leaving it out for 5 minutes. Put back together and commence a recharge. Se if that helps.
