When I was updating my child's ipod touch with itunes....it put the ipod in recovery mode and said I would need to restore and then update....which was my only option to choose, so when I chose restore & update....after going thru it seemed the process, then a window came up that stated the ipod couldn't be restored at this time because the ipod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable and to try again. After trying this several times unsuccessfuly and going thru the steps on the help section, the ipod is still not able to restore & update, thus we can't access anything on our very new ipod touch and I am very frustrated, can't afford any Apple support tech time. PLEASE HELP!!

Ok so I reset my ipod touch 4th gen and it got stuck on the apple logo screen and holding down the buttons just made it turn off for a few seconds and go straight back onto the logo screen, nothing was happening with it connecting to itunes either. But I held the home and the power button down at the same time while connected to my laptop and then when the logo reappeard I released the power button and it came up with with the itunes logo and the usb logo. It then allowed me to select restore on itunes which I did but a box popped up saying "The ipod software update server could not be contacted. make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later." Please help.

I got a new ipod touch for Christmas.
Today I was going to put music on it, i was told there was updates.
So I went ahead to do them.
My Ipod is stuck on the screen with the usb cord pointing to the itunes logo.
In Itunes i'm told :
Itunes has dected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes.
Turning the ipod off - the same screen appears when it's back on.
When I click restore ipod and after restore and update is clicked ; Extracting software loads up at the top.
When its done this is the message I get:
The iPod 'iPod' cannot be restored at this time because the ipod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable.
I've been looking up trying to figure it out myself and have read making sure a setting in Lan Settings in Internet Properties has ; Automatically detect settings checked. I still get the same ipod message.
I've tried holding the power and home key to turn it off, then powering it back on. But that doesn't work.
I installed itunes today, so its up to date - I checked.
I don't know what else to do.
Can someone help me out, please? :}
The operating system was ios 5 something? It wanted to update to 6 i believe.I've tried the top part but now that i've looked to the bottom:

The “hosts” file may also be blocking gs.apple.com.
Select the hosts file (normally you can find your hosts file at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC).
I put this in the url bar?

IPod software update server could not be contacted
I was attempting to sync my iPod Classic and received a message saying:
iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod. Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings.
I did this and received this message:
The iPod software update server could not be contacted.
I have powered my iPod off (holding down menu & toggle) several times and I have quit iTunes and opened it again to see if this would fix the problem but I always get the same error messages listed above.
Can anyone tell me how I can resolve this problem?
Thank you!Hey there,
Make sure you iTunes is enabled through the Windows firewall. Instructions on how to do this can be found [HERE|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1368] as well as other troubleshooting solutions for this issue.
If you are using Norton or McAfee AV, I would try temporarily disabling them to see if that helps the situation as well.
Or see if this article can help you out. It's worth a shot.

Hope this helps.

"Ipod software update server could not be contacted": Ipod Restore
When I was trying to update software on my 4th generation Ipod Touch, the screen froze with the 'connect to Itunes' image (i.e. the Itunes logo and the USB). The screen has been frozen that way since and consequently, I have tried to restore my Ipod.
I have uninstalled and installed the latest update of Itunes; updated Windows; re-started my computer numerous times and tried holding the power off/home buttons down together. When Itunes loads, I always get the option of restoring my Ipod however once it has finished extracting software, it says "it cannot be restored at this time because the Ipod software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable".
Therefore, I was wondering if anyone can provide any help in terms of what to do as I am really stuck :/
Thank you!Update Server

My daughter forgot her passcode. Her iPod Touch 4gen is disabled. I've tried everything I've read online. I get to the "Restore" part on iTunes and then I get the message, "The iPod Software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network connections are correct and your network connection is active or try again later." How can this be so hard to do? Why isn't there a simpler solution. I live 2 hours from the nearest Apple store. Any advice you may offer would be very much appreciated.

I recently had my iPhone taken away from over-use so I thought I'd just use my iPod I haven't used in forever, when turning it on it said locked for 21 million minutes, so I checked out few videos, fix it on iTunes, and when I could access my iPod, my mind went complelty blank, so I checked out so more videos on what to do when fogetting your passcode, and I found you had to restore your iPod, which was fine by me because, I have maybe an app or two on it, so wiping everything out wouldn't be anything.. But, when I go to restore my iPod I get, like in the title, "The iPod software update server could not be contacted" any ideas on what to do?

trying to update 2 ipods but when I go through the process it says "The ipod software update server could not be contacted" "Network connection could not be established". One of the ipods is locked and I don't remember password.
Here's what you can do in case of the forgotten password:
Connect in recovery mode and restore, you'll get the option to rest the passcode during this process:
iOS: Unable to update or restore and iPhone and iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.

"iPod software update server could not be contacted. The Server does not support this version of iTunes." iPod will not turn on or charge or reset settings. I tried plugging it in my laptop, house computer and docking station to charge and nothing. Also, I have all the latest software updates to my knowledge. This is a classic 8GB iPod, running of Windows 7. Any thoughts/suggestions?
only thing that seems to work so far is syncing without photos and also check here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3206849?start=30&tstart=0

'The iPod software update server could not be contacted.'
I have recently been having problems with my iPod touch 2g.
I updated my iPod and everything worked fine, but I realised it had wiped my iPod clean, and I changed it back to recover my lost notes. I got most back, but when I tried to update it again, the problems came.
Whenever I tried to click restore on iTunes, an error kept coming up:
"This iPod cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device Service is not started."
I tried searching around for answers but nothing would work. I cannot acess my iPod. It is frozen on the recovery mode screen, (the image of a USB and iTunes logo), and cannot be switched off. I have tried uninstalling iTunes multiple times and restarting my computer.
When I started this update, I had iTunes 10. (Not sure exactly which one). Though at one point I updated it to iTunes 11, but quickly uninstalled it and when back to 10 because I didn't like it. Maybe this had something to do with all the errors? I don't know.
Then overnight, my iPod was just left on the recovery mode screen, unable to do anything with it. When I switched my computer back on to try again, when I click restore, a new message comes up:
"The iPod software update server could not be contacted."
I again tried researching but nothing has worked. My internet connection is perfectly fine. I can't use my iPod at all. It needs restoring, iTunes recognises that, but will not let me click restore. iTunes store works fine.
Please, somebody help?! I don't know what to do.
