I transfered my iphone 4s data (apps) to my daughter's ipod touch 4th gen. It went seemlessly except I now have approximately 2g of something marked "other". The "other" is not apps, music, or photos. What is "other" and how can I get rid of it to free up space?

An "other" that large usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files. Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

Go to preferences and disable auto-syncing.
Itunes - Preferences - Syncing - Disable automatic syncing for all iphones and ipod touch.
Do the syncing manually everytime you connect your iphone or ipod touch, backup is lighting fast. It use to take 20-25minutes for me but now it takes less than a minute I think manual syncing backups only the changes made by you.

How can I recover texts & contacts on iPhone 5c after syncing it with an old iPod touch backup?

I used to have an old LG flip-phone and an iPod Touch. I lost the iPod Touch about six months ago. This week I got my iPhone. I had to go to the Verizon store to have them take all the contacts off the LG phone and put them onto my iPod.
I had painstakingly pared down my iTunes music library to choice selection of checked items that were small enough to fit on the iPod touch. I didn't want to go through that process again, so I hooked my iPhone up to my computer for the first time, opened iTunes, and synced with the iPod touch backup on my computer. It would have been smart to have backed up the iPhone first, but I didn't. Since I couldn't text with the iPod Touch, it didn't occur to me that the existing texts on my iPhone would be overwritten.
Now all the media files and apps from my old iPod Touch are on my new iPhone 5. The new iPhone apps I downloaded yesterday are on there, too. But the contacts and texts have vanished.
To review: no iTunes backup of iPhone data. No iCloud backup, either-- I've never used iCloud before.
I downloaded Wondershare's iPhone Data Recovery program and used it to scan data on the device. The scan shows 0 contacts and only the 2 text messages that I've received this evening. Curiously, it does have my entire call history from the last week.
So is there any way to recover the texts from this last week?
This seems pretty hopeless but I thought I'd try. Thank for your help.

You are correct. There is no other way to recover this material, and yes it would have been a good idea to backup the iPhone prior to the restore. Remember that a restore to a previous date deletes everything on the device and puts it back to the state of things on the date you choose. The texts and contacts would be gone. Did you possibly sync the contacts with a supported application on the computer? That is the only other way to recover contacts. They are designed to be synced with a supported application on the computer, or with a cloud service such as iCloud, Google or Yahoo.

Hello everyone! Is it possible for me to transfer my iPhone & iPod touch backup data from my PC (Windows 7) to a Macbook Pro? Because I'm planning to switch to Mac soon. I've tried transferring my backup data from PC to PC and it worked (Windows XP2 to Windows 7). I was able to sync my previous data to my iDevices when I plugged them into my new PC. If it is possible, can anybody please tell me how?

You are correct. Transfer your iTunes library, which includes your app and music purchases from the PC directly to your new MacBook Pro. Your photos, contacts, and other information can be transferred also if you use Migration Assistant.

After you sync the iPhone to the PC for the last time, "deauthorize" the PC for music purchases.
When you sync the iPhone to the MacBook for the first time, it will tell you that it is already synced to another computer, and give you the option to erase and sync it to the MacBook.

You can sync as many devices as you want to the same iTunes account, there is no limit. You can have the same content on each device or different content, the choice is yours. iTunes will keep everything straight, by device, including separate backups. I'd suggest giving each device a unique name, to make things easier.

Since installing the latest itunes to windows 8 my iphone and ipod touch is not being recognized in itunes, therefore i can't change playlists or add songs etc. Is this a fault with itunes as it was fine with the older version or is there something i can do. If you still have the devices, import them to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083), then sync them to your current device. If they are only stored in backups, the only way to access them is to restore the device to the entire backup. Note: you can only restore photos in an iPhone backup to another iPhone, and from an iPad backup to another iPad. If the backups are on your computer, you may be able to extract the photos from the backup using 3rd party software such as iPhone Backup Extractor.

I've backed up my MacBook and iMac on my 1TB Time Capsule, I've heard that you can also back up your iPod Touches and iPhone, I have contacts, music etc. on my iPhone and iPod Touch that I would like to be backed up, I'm not sure how to back both of them up, any information would be helpful, thanks.

The backup of an iPhone and iPod touch occurs in iTunes itself. But do not rely on this as your main backup.
Timemachine if setup will make a backup of your OS and iTunes information including the iTunes backup files it makes each time you sync and or restore and it mentions backing up or asks you to backup.
If you really want to backup iCal and Address Book follow instructions below.
1. Launch Address Book, And ensure it has all the same contacts iPhone does. if you have been syncing with address book then it will
*Go to File - Export - Address Book Archive - Save to Desktop. Then save that file to time Capsule or some other backup device.
2. Launch iCal, And ensure it has all the same calender data iPhone does. if you have been syncing with iCal then it will
*Go to File - Backup iCal - Save to Desktop, Now save to time capsule or any other device.
I personally recommending backing up like this biweekly or once a month to ensure you got the latest data backup.
If you store them on Time Capsule also store them on another portable HD or even iDisk if you got a .Mac account. You can never have too many backups

Ipod touch backup folder

I am trying to find the location of the ipod touch backup folder. All info i have seen shows where the iphone backup folder is, but no information on the ipod touch backup folder.

On my iMac, it is in the same folder. There are 2 folders within the MobileSync/Backup folder, one for my iPhone and one for my iPod Touch.
On a Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
On a PC running Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

Only one iPod Touch backup kept

Hi. Each time I sync my iPod Touch, iTunes backs it up, as expected. But it only keeps once backup. So the next time I back it up, I lose the previous backup. I understand that I can get the old backups using Time Machine, but would like it to just keep the backups. Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is this the normal behavior?

Readers for iPod touch backup?

What are the readers necessary for an iPod touch backup to work? I have an iPod touch 4g, and I think there may have been a problem with the backup reader because when I tried to restore it from the backup, in the summary tab under devices, it showed all of the data, but not the separation of music, apps, etc. It also wouldn't start past the frozen apple logo with empty loading bar, which leads me to believe that it couldn't separate the data properly. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I really do not understand your question. The backup does not included synced items like app and music. See:

Try terminating the restore, reboot your computer and reset the iPod and try again.
- Reset the iOS device.
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- If problems try placing the iPod in Recovery Mode and try again.
- Next try DFU mode and try restoring again.

For anyone else reading this thread, it is worth knowing that sometimes an email is, or can be, corrupted thereby jamming the works. The solution above is good, but I just wanted to suggest another one.
If the problem arises, go to an online mail access service, such as Mail2Web.com and login to you mail account there and delete the offending message.
Problem solved.
And George, as this is all entirely voluntary, whinging about no takers may not endear people to you. Besides which, a few minutes of searching on Google would have found you a number of solutions.

I have been successfully using the same apple ID on itunes, my iphone and ipod touch
I upgraded both my ihpone and ipod to iOS5 and now both devices are telling me that my apple ID is already being used when I try to sign in
any ideas? I have always used the same ID so I can have purchased apps on both devices
can I carry on doing this now icloud has been launched? I'm a bit confused!
