Talk to your insurance agent for that coverage.
The Apple warranty is only good in the country the iPhone is purchased in and only covers material and workmanship. It does not cover lose, theft or damage.

The iPhone is made to work with each individual country it was designed for.. Sorry to say but your friend wasted his or your money. Depending on the firmware he bought you might not even be able to unlock it. I would suggest trying to return it to Apple for your money back.

Home screen lock is different than carrier lock.
If the device is locked to a specific carrier for cell service you cannot use a sim from another provider without having the device unlocked. Only the carrier to which the device is locked will be able to unlock the device for service on another provider.

Unless you are a current/former customer, using/used that phone on a network in the UK, you can forget about getting it officially unlocked, as none of the UK carriers will authorize unlocking unless you are a current/former customer.

The languages available for displaying the OS are published in the tech specs, and you cannot add new ones:
