Only the carrier can authorise unlocking. You need to contact them.

Updating and restoring does not lock, but if you have a jailbreak (not AppleSoftware) and you return to Apple Software then it will lock. After all Apple has to keep to the law. It is even possible, that the jailbreak software makes it impossible to install Apple Software again and your iPhone will be inoperable after you try the update.
So If you officially unlocked you are fine and if you had a jailbreak, there is nothing an Apple forum can do for you. -

You didn't buy an 'unlocked' iPhone 3GS - you bought a 'hacked' one.
Updating to iOS 5 removed the hack and the unofficial unlock.
All you can do is try to find out which network the phone is locked to and ask them if they can unlock it properly.
Otherwise, sell it or throw it away and buy an officially unlocked phone from an official source. -

This is absolutely about to make me have to leave iphone if I can't figure this out. I can recieve picture messages when im in iMessage but is useless for people without iPhones. I can't recieve any media messages out of iMessage just texts. This problem first started occuring when I updated, never had any problems before.

You're out of luck. Discussing jailbroken phones is forbidden by the TOS.
Jailbreaking voids any warranty and forfeits all rights to support. -
Also, everytime we sync, emails delete from the iPhone. We don't want them to. Is there a setting to prevent this from happening?
Contacts are not part of the backup. Those should be synced with a compatible address book on your computer. Notes can sync with a mail account.
No idea what you mean about emails deleting from the phone when you sync. E-mail messages are not synced with anything but the mail server. Only account information is synced. -

Plug it into itunes with the USB cable. The over the air update feature is a new feature, not part of iOS4, so you do not have it to use until you update.

The same incompatibility exists in all GSM iPhones. They can use the US T-Mobile network, but only using EDGE since T-Mobile's 3G service uses a frequency not supported in the iPhone.

I have a US iPhone 3GS made in 2011. Now in the Philippines I had it unlocked. Now Internet is turned off and no technician can turn it on. I can only use Internet when I have WiFi access. Any ideas?

If it was not unlocked by AT&T, then it was hacked. Hacked and jailbroken phones can not be discussed here per the TOS. -
I have restored my iphone 3gs after having only the apple logo, it took me through all the restore, a page saying 'congrats your phone is now unlocked', and allowed me to chose to set up from new or back up....yet still displays only the apple logo.

I clicked on the more information tab and was taken to a website with some troubleshooting. I did what they suggested (based on the error #) and still no luck. I’ve tried to restore and update about 10 times now but the same message keeps coming up at the end. What should I do now?
