HT201274 Erase all settings question

Am trying to erase all content and settings on my iPhone 4 before selling it. I go to the "reset" menu, click the appropriate button, put in my passcode. It then asks for my passcode again, but when I put it in I get a "failed passcode attempt" message. Suggestions?

You're gonna have to force the phone into recovery mode & restore it as new:
First, turn your phone off. Then:
Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new.

If I erase all settings and content on my iPhone, and it's connected to iCloud, will it erase everything on my other devices as well?

It will erase your iCloud account so any changes shouldn't be reflected in iCloud.  But to be safe, just go to settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account before erasing the phone.  (This deletes the account from the phone only.)

  • Will "erase all settings & Content" solve this issue?

I posted this question about a half hour ago but it looks like it got deleted, so ill make this as brief as I can.  I was using facebook on my ipad 2 thru safari.  After using FB I would clear cookies and history, then id double tap home button and swipe screen away.  Earlier this week I accidentily double tapped the home button and a FB screen showing a chat popped up.  When I went to click on the screen it brought me to the sign in screen.  I performed an erase all settings and content and then set up as a new ipad.  ipad was never hooked up to the cloud before but I now have it hooked up after setting up as new.  I have backed up the "new" ipad now.  Is there any chance this screen will pop up again (I wont be logging onto FB or the FB app anymore on the ipad).

Thank you all. Im OCD so naturally Im very nervous.  I want to share a little of the story.  I use to talk to someone online that my wife would not approve of.  I logged onto FB about a month ago to talk to her and then logged on this past sunday.  Each time I was done with FB and chatting I always cleared the history and cookies, then double clicked the home button to swipe away the open app screen.  On Monday I accidently double tapped and a FB screen of our chat from a month ago popped up.  I was shocked because this stuff was always erased.  When I went to maximize the box it just brought me to a log in screen.  I got nervous and did some soul searching and realized that a chat with someone id never ever want to meet wasnt worth the sadness it would bring to my wife if she found out.  I deleted the FB acct, deleted the email associated with the acct, did the erase all content and settings and set up as a new ipad.  I then set up the icloud and backed up this "new" ipad.  I will NEVER log onto fb thru safari or the facebook app, but my wife still logs onto FB on the ipad.  I just want to make sure that this 1 mistake I made is erased forever with no chance of popping up again.

  • Erasing all settings to restore earlier I-Cloud sync

Will the existing "Shared Streams" be deleted from my phone if I erase all settings?  I managed to erase/delete all my videos and many photos from my phone in the process of trying to upload them to my PC.  Now I want to at least recover most of them from an earlier I-Cloud sync I did a couple weeks ago.
But I cannot afford to lose two precious videos that still exist in my Shared Streams folder on the IPhone, since they happened after the I-Cloud sync in question.
Thus my question: what gets erased when you "erase all settings?"
    Thanks!

If you restore with that last backup (3/31/12), you will get the pics in that backup.
Note that pics taken with the iPhone can and should be copied/moved off the iPhone like you would with any digital camera.

  • I have ip 3gs and ios 4.1 i want to upgrade it to download latest version of apps ,which ios will be compatible and is there any danger to update ios before i erased all settings and content and i tried to update but it failed .it is working properly

i have ip 3gs and ios 4.1 i want to upgrade it to download latest version of apps ,which ios will be compatible and is there any danger to update ios before i erased all settings and content and i tried to update but it failed .it is working properly but i want to update from itunes.iwill do back up but is there any other thing i will face after updating like it will jut show apple loge and will not work. please answer quickly

An iPhone 3GS is too old to update to the very latest iOS and you will never be able to use apps that are compatible.  The phone is just too old now in technology terms and the app makers have all moved on, so it's time to get a new phone.
Ideally, perhaps get an iPhone 4s or if you can afford it, an iPhone 5s or 5c which are the newest models.

  • I have erased all settings in my Ipad accidently and now trying to reinstall my Ipad so I can used it again, I did hooked it  up to itunes but it nevers show a column for restore on itunes, please tell me step by step after connecting to itunes, thank you

Hi! I have erased all settings and connections of my ipad 1 generation by mistake and I tried many times to restore all settings and connections by connecting to iTunes but Itunes did not show me a column to restore my ipad, can someone teach me the step by stepto restore settings after connecting to iTunes, thank you!

If you have a backup of the iPad on your computer then you should be able to right-click (command-click on a Mac) the iPad 'device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and select 'restore from backup' on the pop-up - you can't just restore settings though, you will need to restore the whole iPad.

How do I erase all settings and content if I forgot my pass code ?

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore to factory settings/new iPodvia iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

    Or
If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.

Something has gone wrong, on an iPhone 4S the erase all operation should be almost instantaneous.

  • HT201274 Erasing all content & settings/iOS updates

I'm planning to give away my iPod touch 4th generation to a friend.
If I erase all content & settings on it before giving it to him, does that mean that the software updates will be removed as well?
Not that it's a big issue - all he'd have to do is update it himself.
    Just wondering.

    Very cool!
Thanks for the quick response! :-D

  • Ipad 1 Erase all settings help please

    Hello,
I just got my ipad2. I'm getting ready to sell my ipad 1 to a friend of mine. After I set up my new ipad 2 I went to delete all the content and personal info off my ipad 1.
    Settings
    Reset
Then I chose Erase all Content and Settings.
Now "nothing" comes up on the screen except the apple logo.
Did I mess up? Will my friend still be able to connect to his itunes and load the IOS and HIS itunes account or will he need to go to Apple for help?
    I hope I didn't kill my ipad 1.
Thanks in advance for the help.
    Have a great day.
    Trent

Thank you! So when I sale it my friend should be able to "restore" from his itunes account?
I just needed to make sure al my personal and church business information was off the ipad 1 before I sold it.
    Thanks again for the help.

  • Does "Erase all settings" make the phone like a restore?

I am selling my iPhone 4. I don't want to update it to 4.0.2, but iTunes is trying to make me do it in order to restore - so instead i used the iPhones system settings to erase all data and settings ... it now appears as a restored phone - is this good enough for selling preparation.
P.S. the reason for selling is my employer is providing me with a paid for Evo (including plan etc). I prefer the iPhone for many reasons, but also want to save money, so reluctantly I am selling it.

You need to read closer, right below the "Reset All Settings" is "Erase All Content and Settings". They are two completely different things. roaminggnome is referring to the "Erase All Content and Settings" as clearly mentioned in his post.
I fear roamingnome, to whom I was responding, did not clearly mention "Erase All Content and Settings". Read closer...

  • HT201274 erase all contect, wifi not available

How do I erase all content on an ipod touch without being connected to wifi?  It keeps asking for my username and password, however the internet is not available as my router died.

If you have a fifth-generation iPod touch with iOS 7 and set up Find My iPod, then you will have to turn that off before you can erase the iPod. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5818
If it requires an Internet connection - I'm not sure - then you will have to find a valid Wi-Fi connection you can use.
