HT201274 Erasing all content & settings/iOS updates

I'm planning to give away my iPod touch 4th generation to a friend.
If I erase all content & settings on it before giving it to him, does that mean that the software updates will be removed as well?
Not that it's a big issue - all he'd have to do is update it himself.
Just wondering.

Very cool!
Thanks for the quick response! :-D

I finally got the solution from a friend at the TSR forum. It was a problem with QUicktime 7.2. I needed to install this update:

  • How do i reset and erase all content settings when i dont know my restriction password

How do I reset and erase all content without knowing a restriction passcode

You can't. You have to get into settings in order to erase all content and settings. You have to restore the devics using iTunes and you have to restore as new or if you restore the backup, you will just be restoring the restrictions code that you can't remember.
Do not backup the iPad since you will not be able to use it.

  • Apple ID Password & Erasing All Content/Settings

I have an iPad loaned to me by my employer.  When I received it, I created an apple ID using Work-Email-Address-A.  A year or so ago, my work email changed to Work-Email-Address-B, but I never changed the email address on my Apple ID.  So, now I am leaving this employer, and have to return the iPad.  I need to change the apple ID email to my Personal-Email and I need to erase all content and settings on the iPad.
I went to Manage My Apple ID, changed my email to my Personal-Email, changed my password, and updated some other personal info (address, last name).  I backed up my iPad on my personal laptop.  However, when I went to "Erase all content and settings," it asked me for my password for my old Work-Email-Address-A.  I entered the old password, and it said it was incorrect.  I entered the new password, and it said it was incorrect.  I went back to Manage My Apple ID and tried to sign in with Work-Email-Address-A, but it said my password was incorrect.  When I tried to do the "forgot my password," it asked me if I wanted to verify by email or by security questions.  When I asked it to verify by email, it said that the email had been sent, but I never received it. (And I believe emails sent to Work-Email-Address A will be forwarded to Work-Email-Address-B).  When I asked it to verify by security questions, it asked me for my birthdate.  When I entered my birthdate, it told me it was wrong.
On another thread, someone had a problem with two emails and an iCloud account.  So, I thought if I updated my iCloud account, it would let me erase the iPad.  Currently, my iPad still shows the old Work-Email-Address-A as my iCloud account.  When I go to sign in to iCloud, it says my password is incorrect.  When I say I "forgot my password," it takes me to the previously described screen (see earlier description of the password problem).
All I want to do is erase all content and settings and give this thing back to my employer, but it won't let me do it without a password I don't have and it won't help me recover.  Help!

I would connect it to itunes and do a factory restore and try that

  • I hit erase all content settings and now phones been on that screen for hours

I hit erase all content and settings and now phones been on that screen for hours

Depending on the size of the data you want to erase, this might take a little longer than expected.
If the phone is frozen, try to reset it by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Appel logo comeback again.
You can also try to set it back to factory settings by following the steps mentioned in this article:

  • HT201274 I went to General Reset Erase All Content & Settings - and now nothing works. I tried the advice on this forum, i.e., turn the phone off, connect to the white apple cable while pressing the home key. Still not working. What do I do?

After i dod the above my ipone still does not work. It seems like all settings are gone. I tried the advice on one of the forums here which was turn the phone off, connect to the cable to the computer and not the phone, press the home button continously and connect the cable. Itunes at this point identified the phone and prompted to restore settings. It seemed to be doing something but now once I tried turning it on, its still not working.

    start iTunes,
    plug in your USB cable
    switch off your iPhone
press holding home button(the round button in front of the Phone)
plug it on to the USB cable
    keep holding the button
till iTunes says it found a iPhone in recovery mode
then click restore as a NEW iPhone
    then sync!?

  • HT201274 Erase all content and setting is not working

my ipad is displaying the logo of the apple and the loading bar is also appearing but how long it will take, i kept it for more than 8 hours but loading bar is still empty and the ipad is discharged once than i keep it on charging then also apple logo is appearing and loading bar is still not filling.

You will probably have to restore your iPad using Recovery Mode. You will need to use iTunes in order to do this.
Before you resort to that, try resetting the iPad like this. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
If that fails, and it probably will, then you will have to restore your iPad.

  • Really how secure is the current erase all content and settings?

I am not sure about taking my iPhone in for repair or exchange after reading many old articles about how unsecure the erase really is, seeing how many sensitive passwords and e-mails I have. I have the most current firmware. So tell me, how reliable for keeping my data safe and gone is the current "Erase all content and settings" feature?
Also note: I have iPhone 3g, not later or earlier. So I am not sure if the hardware would make a difference, but yeah.

It is what it is. Erase all contents & settings overwrites user settings and information, writing a series of ones to the data partition. This process can take several hours, depending on the storage capacity of your iPhone. During this time, the device displays the Apple logo and a progress bar. If you had a 3GS, it would be instantaneous, as the 3GS supports hardware encryption. Can someone still recover data? Yes. But the software & equipment necessary to do so is very expensive & generally only available to law enforcement.

  • Erasing all content and settings

Not sure this is the correct forum topic, but it came closest. My Ipod touch 3gen has been freezing for weeks. I kept resetting it by holding the sleep/wake button & home button, but recently that became less effective because I was no longer able to open any of my apps. So I used the erase all content & settings option. I started this on Sunday (1/30/11) around noon. It is still erasing...I guess. My screen is black with that little "thinking" circle rotating in the middle of the screen. Is that typical of the Ipod erasing the content, or has something gone awry?

The Users Guide says that it can take up to four hours:
Erase all content and settings: Connect iPod touch to your computer or a power
adapter. Choose General > Reset and tap “Erase All Content and Settings.”
This resets all settings to their defaults and erases all your information and media:
On iPod touch 3rd generation or later: by removing the encryption key to the data
(which is encrypted using 256-bit AES encryption)
On iPod touch 2nd generation: by overwriting the data
Important: You can’t use iPod touch while data is being overwritten. This can take
up to four hours or more, depending on the model and storage capacity of your
iPod touch. (On iPod touch 3rd generation or later, the encryption key is removed
    immediately.)
Thus, if you really have a 3G (if it has 8GB capacity it is really a 2G) or even a 3G it is taking too long. I would stop/reset and then try restoring the iPad via iTunes.
For you stated problem the best solution would have been restoring to factory defaults/new iPod via iTunes instead of resetting via the reset all setting.

  • If I erase all content and settings can it harm my iPhone ?

I have an issue with seeing my usage go up so I've performed this reset multiple times but I've been wondering if I continue to do do can I damage my phone ?

Erase All Content & settings does not damage your iPhone.  It simply erases all of your info and makes it like new.  You can do this as many times as you need.

  • Erasing all content on old phone

I'm trying to erase all content & settings on an old iphone in order to give it to a friend. But when I try through Settings and it asks me for my Apple ID, I get a message saying "Verification failed. There was an error connecting to iCloud." But my info is correct.

The only way to do so is to start over: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. You won't be able to use the backup of your old phone unless you are setting up a new phone.

  • HT201274 Tried to erase all content and settings...now it won't do anything

I have a first generation iTouch and last night I selected to Erase All Content and Settings. I wanted to wipe it because I'm switching to an iPhone. The iTouch didn't have much charge so I started charging it while it was doing it's thing. Unfortunately, the iTouch doesn't do anything. When I hold down the power button, the white apple logo appears. It's been on a charger for several hours, too. When I plug it into my computer and open iTunes, the computer doesn't recognize the device.

Try connecting the device to iTunes in recovery mode and restoring it. See this article for instructions on putting your iPod into recovery mode.

  • Does "reset and erase all content" update iOS?

    Hi guys,
My girlfriend has an iPhone 4 that has been giving her a lot of problems lately. I want to restore it but I don't want to update it to iOS 6 just yet. Instead of restoring through iTunes, if I restore via settings>general>"reset settings and erase all content" will that restore the phone WITHOUT updating it to iOS 6? Please let me know. Thanks

I understand that my chances of having issues are very slim. But articles like the one below make me nervous because if i update and have issues, Apple doesnt let me downgrade, meaning we would be stuck with crappy battery life and literally no way to fix it. Not a position I want to be in. I understand that the internet can blow things way out of portortion, but still.
    http://www.networkworld.com/news/2012/100212-iphone-battery-262963.html
I understand that article refers to 6.0, but most of what i have read has said that people with battery issues havent seen it get better with 6.1 Thats why i was hoping to see a statistic of those affected. I just would hate to pull the trigger and have her battery die on her every afternoon. Just because 300 million are running iOS 6 doesnt mean 300 million are running it issue free. Any amount of them could be having trouble, but you would never know, because thanks to Apple, you CANT downgrade.
