HT201276 Frozen computer

What do I do if my comPuter is frozen and force quit doesn't work?

I can get the cursor to move but it won't force quit. Ive tried the option-command-esc for 3 seconds. I can't get anything to open in the "apple" menu and the finder doesn't respond.

  • Dialog box "unapproved caller" has frozen computer multiple reboots has not resolved the issue

Frozen screen with dialog box "unapproved caller"
have be turned off wireless, have rebooted in option and verified all discs, still frozen on dialog box at startup

Restart the computer in safe mode. Certain caches maintained by the system will be rebuilt.
Safe mode is much slower to start up than normal.
When the login screen appears, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

  • New mini-frozen computer

I just got a mini; I'm not very good on computers. But, I installed itunes on my 1-yr old laptop (has Windows XP) and transferred about 350 songs into itunes. Then, I connected the IPOD into the USB2 card outlet and my computer froze up while trying to get the IPOD recognized. I've tried it repeatedly and my computer always freezes up. The mini flashes the "do not disconnect" sign. What am I doing wrong? Please help!

hi i actually just got my mini yesterday and i think i'm having the same problem gloria had. the moment i connect my mini to the computer, the mini flashes the "do not disconnect" sign. i tried to restore/format it on my computer, but every time i tried, it would freeze my computer up (the mouse wouldn't even move). after restoring it on a friend's computer (it now says updated on the ipod manager thing) i opened up iTunes, connected my mini, and then it froze up my computer again. i'm at a complete loss as to what to do, please help....

  • IPod frozen, computer & iTunes not recognizing it HELP PLEASE!

My iPod's screen (I have it unplugged from computer) is stuck on the synchronizing Do not disconnect. message and it won't go off. It also still stays it's locked although it isn't. Whenever I plug it back into the laptop it NOTHING picks it up, it just comes up with a message saying it's an unknown device. I've tried to restart my computer and I;ve put my iPod in another computer and it also said it was an unkown device and nothing would pick it up. Can someone please help me.

Call Apple (1-800-myapple) and give them the serial number.
They can notify the last registered owner and pass on your contact info to them so it can be returned.

  • Frozen computer for no reason?

I got computer a week ago and was on facebook (perhaps that was my big mistake)and it froze. I do not know the mac equivalent of control-alt-delete. any ideas???? How do I unfreeze the screen?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
option-command-escape should bring up a window showing running apps (a bit like the Windows Task Manager) and allow you to select one and Force Quit.

  • Auto update/frozen computer

My emac notified me to update. I think it was itunes, I am not sure. It asked me to reboot and I did. The computer boots up to a screen that says, "Waiting for file download" with the task bar almost complete. I have rebooted several times with it returning to this screen. Anybody have a clue?

    Hi, and welcome!
I very much doubt that the computer would wake from sleep. If my understanding is correct, the auto-update feature works by just checking every now and then if there are any updates available. It cannot perform this check while it is sleeping.
So, I think I can safely say that the answer is: no.

  • A Frozen computer+ A Restart= A none working SAFARI PLEASE HELP!

So recently I moved back into my parents home and my sister bought a router. She lives upstairs I live downstairs. When I tried to get internet recently it was successful. So I went to my Mac updates and I had 13 that needed to be performed. After the 13 loaded It asked to restart the computer and I eventually did. But then it started to reload them again. After awhile of me trying to hold the button down and shut the computer down manually I shut it down by shutting my power strip its connected to off and then on. But Now when i restart my computer the 1st screen that pops up states "The Application GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent quit unexpectedly" and give me 3 options (To Relaunch,Restart, or Ignore) When I relaunch NOTHING happens or it'll take me to a screen that says the program "quit unexpectedly after it was relaunched and resetting the application settings may fix the problem" but when I click the reset and relaunch option still nothing happens.
Also, The programs IPages,Itunes,Ichat,Iwork, dictionary, and safari does not work and what works are things such as Final Cut, Folders on my desktop, a program called Mpeg stream clip, Just like random things work. I cant even do my software updates, it'll just give me the same screen with the same 3 options that dont work! WHat has happened? Did I lose my iPages work? Did I lose the internet? Did the 13 programs Not finish installing is this why this is happening? Do i have to reboot somehow? SOme one please help!. Iam very confused Thank you immensly for reading!

    Hi Editheworld
it's likely that some of the files on the disk are damaged/missing due to the update not working out.
Most likely - all your personal files are ok... but really, you should have some kind of backup plan for these rare occasions - even if it's just copying the most important things to DVD ( an external HD is nicer, but cost$ more).
As regards what to do about it - I'd suggest an 'archive and install' - you can read about your options at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545
& follow that with the 10.5.8 combo update from here
then whatever software update tells you is needed.
Sometimes ... it's just one file that gets messed up & the reinstall can be avoided; but this does require reading/copying the Crash logs (if any) for the application(s) that don't work, then manually replacing the damaged file(s), with no guarantee it will work. Sooo it's easier & likely faster, to go the A & I route.

well, When I called earlier today I talked to an Apple Rep. And even though he could only trouble shoot with me Because It cost $ to endulge deeper, It seems that the one solid thing here is that its a software issue not hardware.
It's probably a disk corruption, but that's not a certainty. It can be hardware. Disk blocks can and do fail, and can lead to just these sorts of symptoms, for instance.
I made a new user and logged onto my computer that way and still, the same things dont work (i tunes I work etc.) So your saying to start fresh?
I'm suggesting to first create a backup of your existing (corrupt?) boot disk. Then wipe the disk. Then install. Then reload. Yes. With the backup of your boot disk to an external USB or firewire drive, you can (once the operating system is reloaded) potentially pull over files from the (corrupt?) disk. You'll also then have a disk device you can potentially use as a target for future Time Machine backups, as well.
wipe clean and start fresh. I mean should I even take it to a apple dealer in this situation?
That's entirely your call. Troubleshooting this stuff remotely isn't easy; I'm making a number of assumptions (guesses) around what happened here, and what sort of recovery might be appropriate.
And through a wired connection do u mean Like a phone line? thank you again.
No. You're (probably) connected on a WiFi (wireless networking) router when you refer to "router". There are various and very different sorts of devices correctly and incorrectly called "routers", and I'm guessing you're referring to a WiFi router here. Most WiFi routers will have a wired connection into the ISP; a DSL or cable modem wire are among the more common connections. These are wired connections. Most WiFi routers also have additional (wired) ports. WiFi is subject to interference. If you've had problems with the wireless network connection, a wired connection can be more reliable.

  • Wheel of Fortune cursor and frozen computer problem

every so often I see the cursor change to a "Colorful Wheel of Fortune" and I am prevented from doing anything with my computer. Can anyone tell me what this form of the cursor means and what causes it? The only fix I can find is to hold the power button down long enough to cause a shutdown and then turn the computer back on again.

Hi SandyMurphy, welocme to the discussion forums. Your wheel of fortune is well known as SBBOD "spinning beachball of death." Your computer is bogging down and not responding, duh. Many question: new machine old machine, how much ram, 10-15% free harddrive space??? Without knowing the details, as a first step you can open "DiskUtility" and repair permissions to see if this helps. A hard shut down like you mention of course is a last resort, and does not solve the problem. You can read more here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/sbbod.html

Hi farai, welcome to the HP Forums. If your computer appears to be powering on, but you cannot see the screen it may be a recoverable situation.
This document will help you diagnose the issue, it looks like you have already done Step 1 (hard reset):
Computer Starts but Screen Remains Blank (Windows 8)
If you get to Step 3, the options listed won't work since you indicated you cannot get into your BIOS. In place of Step 3 in that document, you can try to restore your BIOS using this method: Restoring the BIOS
If you get to the end, it says to call HP. If so, it is most likely a hardware issue and you should call support for more options: HP Technical Support, North America 1-800-474-6836. For all other regions click here.
I hope this helps. If you need any more information, let me know.
