HT201300 MacBook runs slow: how to speed up slow system

Mac unresponsive at times. Constantly seeing the color wheel.  System trying to process but is having a hard time with every program.

Have a look here...
macworld.com/mac-troubleshooting-what-to-do-when-your -computer-is-too-slow.
Basically...
1)  Make sure you have enough Free Hard Drive space for your Mac to Perform as expected...
Rule of thumb is about 15 to 20 GB
2)  And adding more RAM is always a prudent move...
You can use these Links to check which RAM is suitable for your Mac...
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/
If in the UK... Go to http://www.crucial.com
It is Important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
Those sites also have videos on how to Install RAM should you need it...

  • Mac is slow. how to speed up

My Mac (1 yr old) has slowed down.  How to speed it up?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Why is WAV file Voice track playing slow, how to speed up

I drop a WAV file voice track into GarageBand and it plays slow. How can I avoid, and/or fix this condition?

My brushes still run slow especially at low opacity in the 2-8% range for gentle retouching work.  There is a 3-5 second delay sometimes.
I have updated vertsion of Photoshop CS4
Have Open GL Nvidia 7800 authorized board
have latest drivers for video board.
Using 137 gig separate hard drive for cache and scratch
Why would I still be getting this delay?
Sometimes I set my cache level to 1 or 6 to see if that changes things...doesnt do much it seems
    Anything else I can try??
    Thanks

  • Start-up disk selection very slow, how to speed up.

I have multiple Operating Systems on my MBP and in order to boot form one in to the other I hold the Alt key at start-up.  However, having several MBP', i5 on one machine it is extremely slow.  It takes almost 2 minutes before the choice of disks appear, it is a i5, MacBookPro6,2.
Is there a way of speeding this up?  Alernatively, is there maybe a Mac utility where I can choose the start-up disk from (not using the control panel as this would permanently change the start-up disk and I want the Mac OS to be the default OS) and invoke a restart?
    Love to hear.

So my question was how one fixes that?  Rest, un-corrupt.
I must have been tired, I meant "EFI and/or the GUID partition table"
You'll have to backup your files off the machine, erase and install 10.6, software update to 10.6.8, install all OS X programs, setup bootcamp again and can only install Windows 7 (not XP or Vista.) Return files from backup.
Follow these steps, you need to erase the ENTIRE drive of all partitions to catch the hidden EFI partition and rebuild the GUID partition table anew
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Your direct boot XP days are history on your Mac, it's the Apple way to burn their bridges behind them faster and faster every year.
You might want to use a virtual machine instead, but there is a performance hit.

  • How to speed up my system- reboot from time machine or increase free space?

I've just upgraded my system to 3GB ram and some actions are being quite sluggish still- this I would suspect is because I have only 3GB free on my 120GB hard drive.
Would rebooting the system from a time machine backup speed up the computer- in that all the files should be continuous or should I just aim to make more space on the hard drive?

Ouch! You need to delete files - it's not a fragmentation issue, but a lack of available space for virtual memory and swap files. You should always have 10-15% of your capacity free (so, for you, that means keeping 11-16 GB free space on your drive).
At this point, I'd recommend deleting files to free up space, then running Disk Utility > Verify Disk (and if errors are found, boot from the Install DVD and Repair Disk).
To find your largest files, use something like Disk Inventory X:

Is your iPad able to access the internet using Safari?  If not, I suggest you unplug your WiFi router for a few seconds.  Then reset the iPad's network at Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings.  You will need to reconnect the iPad to WiFi.
If you are able to access the internet, then there may be a glitch in your iPad Mail setup you are overlooking.  It could be something like the letter O where a zero should be, a space where none is allowed or a backward slash (\) where a forward slash (/) is required.
One other thing you can try, is to reset (reboot) your iPad.  Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow.  The iPad will restart after a couple of minutes.  Resetting this way will not hurt anything, and sometimes clears up mysterious problems.

  • Speed up/slow down clips

    Hi
I must be missing a trick here. Does anyone know how to speed up/slow down clips in i-movie?
    Any help appreciated,
    thanks
    ospr1

Did apple actually decide not to add these feature on IM08. If so why?
I doubt the Apple made a conscious decision to remove any features. It is more likely the current inability to "thread" the command structure that is causing all of the problems. Basically, the old application allowed third-parties to create code routines that could be selected and called directly/immediately by the user when he or she wished to create a special effect. In essence, the source data is passed to the called routine, modified on the spot, and then inserted into the "timeline" replacing the source content. However, iMovie '08 does not perform any immediate/direct processing. Instead, it lists the source segments to be modified and states what "effect" is to be applied. No real action is taken until the file is actually to be shared or exported. Then, and only then, is a physical movie created. Therefore, the problem is to create an application (iMovie '08) with the capability of extending its own command list, as well as, define these new commands as a process or series of processes which can be called independently at a later time. If your are familiar with FORTH or a similar programming language which has a threaded command structure (i.e., one in which you can define new commands in terms of previously defined commands and formally add them to the command list/structure) then you will likely understand the problems that need to be overcome here by Apple and all third-party companies likely to be involved in creating/re-creating "plug-ins" for iMovie '08.

  • IMovie 08 - Speed up/ slow down clips

anybody know how to speed up / slow down clips in iMovie 08?
    thanks

You can do slow motion with iMovie 08, but it requires the assistance of other programs.
Give the more powerful iMovie 06 a try, you'll find these features and others built in.
Below is a short video showing how slow motion works.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekemnSluEgs
iMovie 06 is a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

  • How can I speed up slow Maverick on MacBook Pro?

question or problem: How can I speed up slow Maverick on MacBook Pro?
answer or solution:  Per Apple Genius in Palo Alto,  CA
Maverick consumes almost my entire 4 GB of ram memory shown in Activity Monitor.
    Found under Applications-->Utilities-->Activity Monitor
Will purchase two 4 GB banks and install myself using inexpensive tools.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Should i put new ram in????
and if yes what should i buy????
    can anybody help me please
    thx.

You're welcome, j. If not enough free space availabe is the issue, now is a good time to upgrade to a much larger HD, as prices have never been better. Clear, illustrated directions are available at ifixit.com, macsales.com, powerbookmedic.com, youtube and others. Macsales, amazon and newegg have a nice selection of HDs, while the latter two also have lots of user reviews.
Given that your MBP is 4-5 years old, and the average life-span of a HD is 3-5 years . . . .
Given that you have a 17" MBP, you can install any capacity HD currently available, just make sure it's 2.5", SATA, and 12.5mm high or less (there's at least one Seagate monster out there that's 14-15mm high). All other things being equal, a 5400RPM HD is going to use less battery power, run cooler, quieter, and with less vibration, and, of course, run a bit slower than a 7200. An SSD is also a possibility (a very expensive one), but you're not going to see anywhere near the speed bump as newer machines due to the SATA 1 (1.5Gbps) SATA/HD bus bottelneck.

  • Speed has slowed to nil  how do i delete all icons running in background?

speed has slowed to nil. How do I delete all icons running in background?

To close an app, drag the app up from the multitasking display.
Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app thumbnail to close it.
    this might help as well.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with a visit to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Macbook running slow

    Hi,
A few people have asked this question, my macbook is running very slow and the mouse spinning circle comes up quite a lot. I am unsure of why it is doing this.
I have attached a copy of the EtreCheck I have done on my system.
Can you please have a look and see if you can see if there is anything wrong, as I am unsure of what I am looking at.

Either update or remove the Vodafone software and see whether there's an improvement.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • IMac & Macbook running slower than a Windows computer

Hello all, I need some help with my apple products.  I spend half my day messing with the internet to try and get it going instead of sitting there with a blank look on its face.  They freeze up to an extent.  I generally can always close out Safari, shut off the wifi, then turn wifi on and safari will work somewhat better sometimes.  Here is the Etre report for both the iMac and MacBook.  Also on the MacBook report, I was digging around in my system report and found something that made me think it might be bad so i have included it as well.  Please help me and keep me from wasting half my day every day.  Thanks.  There is several extra lines after the Macbook report that came from my system report.  I don't know if it is pertinent or not but I feel like it is.  I wasn't sure what to leave out so I just put it all in, sorry for the long post.
Note----- I took out the logs that were from the previous address I lived at.  Just included from when I moved into new house.
    THIS IS FOR THE iMac
    Problem description:
Ever since I moved into this new house my apple computers have slowed down to granny speed and sometimes they just sit there and stare at you.  I have an iMac from 2011, a mac book pro 2014, iPhone 6, iPhone 4s, and to top it off a windows computer that is used for graphic software.  I have 2 TV’s that we use as well.  My internet and cable are provided by ATT and at my old house it worked great, no problems.  I have had ATT out twice since install in January.  They have given me a new modem, and a booster to help increase the reach of the wireless internet.  My internet is supposed to be 18mbs download and for the life of me can’t think of the upload speed.  When testing I usually have a 10 to 11 download and a 1.80 upload speed.  I have ran verify disk, fix permissions so many times and that it is ridiculous.  My iMac is used in the back room which is about 30 feet from modem, that is why they gave me the booster the 2nd time out.  The macbook is used just whereever.  The speed of the Mac’s is slower then the Windows computer.  That ain’t right.  I don’t download anything, I don’t go to crazy suspect sites.  I have taken the iMac to apple store and they tested it and said it was fine.  I have re-installed the O.S. (Yosimiteme 10.10.3).  I just want my apples to work properly again.

Ok, I don't know what those drivers are for??????  I don't have a clue   Here is what it looks like when I do the option thing.  Hopefully its ok to post that.  I went into system preference and went to network and DNS server as a ip number and search domains as attlocal.net not sure thats correct, but that is what my phone had.  Anyway it started working good for a while now it is just going slow again.  I don't have anything set up for the tab 802.1X and my proxies is blank in the protocol to configure (nothing checked( and I a have this *.local, 169.254/16 in the bypass proxy setting plus the use passive FTP box is checked. Maybe that will help some.  I will look at the extensions and get rid of them, I thought I had already done that though.  Ok, thanks for the input let me know if any of this helps or what I should do.  Thanks again.
