HT201317 icloud has deleted all my photos - how do I get them back

I started an iCloud account last night as I wanted to be able to get videos off my phone and share them.
This evening when I checked my photo gallery on my iphone all the photos I'd taken over the last 2 and a half years on my iphone had disappeared. Instead my photo library now seems to be populated by photos I've taken on my digital camera.
itunes says my phone was last backed up to the iCloud this evening so I'm worried that all my photos have disappeared.
This is extremely frustrating. iPhone and apple don't make it easy to get your content off the phone (for instance there doesn't seem to be a way to get photos off the phone without iphoto and I can't get it on my operating system).
Is there any way to get my photos and videos back?

I mac desktop Mac OS X I Photo. I deleted the thumbnails to my I photo. AlI I get are blank images until I click on the images. The photos are still there. I thought the Apple store said to hold down the command and alt button at the same time and it would get me to a screen where I could restore but it is not working.

Put your curser on the photo and double click and it should bring it to life.

I downloaded an update for my iphone, I thought I backed up my phone, but I guess I may have done it wrong because when the download was complete, all my apps, music and ALL MY CONTACTS WERE GONE!! The iphone stores nothing at all to the SIM. There were never any contacts on your SIM.
The iphone is designed to be synced to your computer regularly. You should have been sync the contacts to your computer (Outlook/Address Book) from the very beginning. If you have failed to do this, then they are very likely gone.

I logged on to find that my desktop had changed. I launched itunes and there were no songs there. I checked Macintosh HD/users to find that there weren't any folders there. I've looked at my disk usage and there is 160gb unaccounted for, so maybe there's hope to recover my lost data.

Have you synced back up to your iTunes account? This happened to me too, and when I synced back up with iTunes, all of my photos were backed up to my iTunes account and loaded back onto my iPhone.

This was the scenario:
The first time I updated, it was only my music that was lost.
When I got my music back, I lost my apps.
When I got my apps back, my contacts, notes and photos were lost.
Now I got back everything except for my photos.
(Yes, I restored from backup several times since the first update.)
Do you think if I try restoring from back up, my photos that were taken from my ipod will be restored finally?

No. Anything that was created after your last backup will be gone.
Use iCloud to automatically backup your device, usually once every 24 hours.

You calendar info should also be mirrored on your computer. Use the option to replace all events on the iPod with the info on your computer during the next sync. You can find this option in the info pane, Advanced section.
You can also use the latest backup to restore from, it contains the calendar info as well: iTunes: About iOS backups
