HT201320 I can only receive email not send, it's a hotmail account

I have just set up my iPad with my hotmail account. I have tried sending messages, but although they are in my sent box they have not been received

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

Something isn't configured right but for the life of me, I can't find it. Mail (Connection Doctor) can see my smtp server and ISP home server, but can't send to it. Mail sits in the outbox.

What you need to ask your ISP, likely, is whether they have an Authenticated SMTP for use when connected remotely. With a good many cable ISP, the SMTP is authenticated using the IP address of the modem they supply you, and not Password Authentication -- is this the case for you?
At the same more, and more providers of connection at hotels, WiFi spots, etc., are blocking Port 25 for third party SMTP, but you will be able to use Port 587 in most cases, and Port 465 in some cases, at those locations. But to use either of those ports, the SMTP must be one that is separately authenticated via Password authentication. Thus if your SMTP is authenticated by reference to the IP of your home modem, it won't work of any Port but Port 25 and from home.
One of the attractions of a Gmail account, or a .mac account, is that they also have an authenticated SMTP which works easily from remote locations.
Who is your ISP, or the provider of your email account and SMTP?

Can I receive emails immediately in Mail with a Hotmail account?

If I can do that then how do I set it up? I noticed that on my iPod, the Mail app is able to notify me immediately when an email is sent to me, I want the same function in the Mail application on my Mac.

When Mail gets new messages from the mail server. By default, the option is set to Automatically (Mail varies how often it gets messages, based on whether your Mac is plugged into an electrical outlet).
An IMAP account gets messages more frequently if the account uses push email (set the IDLE command option in the account’s Advanced pane in Mail preferences).
If you set the option to Manually, click the Get Mail icon in the Mail toolbar to check for messages. (Whenever you click an IMAP or Exchange mailbox, it syncs with the server, and shows new messages.)

I have a 1st gen iPhone that I just updated the software to 2.0.2
Now whenever I press the mail icon it goes to the mail app for about 4 seconds, does nothing, no loading of folders, old messages, nothing.
Then it reverts back to the home screen. Tried restarting, haven't tried restoring, thought I'd look here first.
Anyone???

Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.

When I go to connectiom doctor Connection status says mail was able to connect to internet. smtp says connection to server succeeded, login not required. but it can't seem to login inot my account. I am running it wirelessly.

With sparse information you give I would venture that you have not set up the correct Outgoing Mail Server settings in Mail>Preferences>Accounts. Contact your ISP for their set up.

TS3899 My ipood touch works fine when at home and on my own wi-fi network but when abroad and using wi-fi I can only receive emails but my ipod touch won't send my messages. I am not very techy but don't know how to resolve this problem. Any advice?

I am having problems sending emails when using my ipod touch with wi-fi abroad. When at home my ipod touch receives and I can send emails through my home wi-fi system but when away and logged into other wi-fi networkcan only receive emails and not send them. Internet access is fine when abroad.
I am assuming that this is to do with the outgoing server but this is only a guess!
I am not very techy so any ideas how to resolve this problem would be gratefully received.

Seems like the other networks are blocking you from sending emails.
Do yo have more that one email account on the iPod?
Have you tried sending from another account?

I can receive email but I can not send email messages. I keep on getting the following ; can not send mail the recipient - lists the email address - was rejected by the server. How do I fix this problem?

Generally when not using your own ISP, as in when you're away, the other IISP will require Authentication & possibly different ports to send through them.
SMTP and SMTP-SSL is on ports 25, 587 and 465. Port 587 has to be SSL, and port 465 is enforced TLS-wrapped and is generally used by Outlook users.

My send and receive email works fine over wi-fi in the US but when I am in Europe I can only receive emails. My iPad tells me that the emails i have typed have been sent (the whooshing sound) yet they are never received. Anyone have any ideas please?

I have input a valid local smtp address yet that still get no results.

Who is your email provider?
If you use an independent email provider (not tied to any specific ISP) such as GMail or iCloud, you'll have no problems sending email from any location or network, without having to change any outgoing SMTP servers to local ones.
