HT201328 What SIM card to use when unlocking my iPhone?
I currently live in Istanbul, Turkey. I have an iphone that is eligible to be unlocked. In the instructions it says "make sure there is a SIM card inserted in your iphone" Do they mean the original SIM card from ATT, or one from the new carrier here? Thank you!
Until the carrier completes their end of the unlock procedure, their SIM must be in place. Only afterwards will you be able to switch to the other carrier.

I live here in the US, but I want to buy an unlocked iphone from Apple because I travel ALOT. My question is this....besides using it as a phone, i also want to use it to shoot video with to edit on my ipad while travelling.
When i buy it, i understand it wont have a micro sim card. But can I use it without a sim card after i buy it for shooting video? I mean, can i activate it...or rather turn it on WITHOUT putting a sim card in? And just use wifi for awhile. I know i cant make phone calls until i put a sim card in....but right now i am in the states, and i dont know where i will be travelling yet....but i do still want to play with the phone and shoot video with it and get to know it. But i dont want to have to put a sim card in right now or commit to any carrier. Is this possible?
Or will i have to wait until iOS 5 comes out?
Thanks!You can't do anything with any iPhone until it is first activated. Thus, you will have to purchase a sim card to activate the phone. T-Mobile has just started selling micro sims. That will do the trick.

They can tell what kind of device you're connecting with. Believe me, they will catch up to it. Though the don't advertise it, they do have post-paid month to month plans available for the iPhone, including data.

I'm trying to unlock my iPhone 3 but, I don't have the SIM card that was originally in it. The phone has been restored and won't allow me to continue. It's telling me to put a sim add in. I have an active sim are with another cell company but the code is saying invalid sim. How do I get past this?
Contact the carrier the phone is locked to and request that it be unlocked (not all carriers offer this). Only they can request that it be officially unlocked.

my phone needs unlocking after using a tmobile sim in it yet apple says all phones are unlocked when bought but tmobile cannot help me on this so I'm hoping I can get help here

Merry Christmas, thanx for the reply. Yes I have spoken to them but because I didn't purchase the phone from them they cannot get it unlocked. I have spoken to different people pleaded, explained myself nothing worked. I have also contacted Apple who also said they couldn't help so apple asked me to contact tmobile and tmobile asked me to contact apple so I went in circles till I gave up, it's been six months now just feel disappointed I only used the phone to set it up with my tmobile sim them but that was it, can't use it anymore unless it's a tmobile sim which I don't have anymore.

Yes. But make sure you buy it at an Apple Store. Other stores selling SIM free iPhones will sell those that will usually lock to the carrier whose SIM is used to first activate the phone. Then you will be stuck.

Not in the US, at the present time. Apple has not started selling officially unlocked iPhone 5's in the US, & has not announced when they will.

iPads are not "locked". Get an iPad data plan and sim card from a local provider and connect to their 3G/LTE service.

You must complete the unlock process with the ATT SIM in the phone. Follow the directions you received with the email saying that your unlock was approved.
At the end of the process you should have gotten an message saying that your phone was succesfully unlocked. -

I am Australian and I am in the UK on holiday, I enquired in a VODAPHONE shop about a SIM card to use in my ipad whilst in the UK, I was told it might block my i-pad when I return home to Australia, is that correct?I used a UK SIMM card in mine when in the UK. When I got back to Sydney I just removed it and put my Telstra SIMM back in. It found the Telstra network and all was well. I'm not sure how it could block your iPad if its not in the iPad when you get home.

Add another good card and delete the old one, Yu can also purchase and redeem an iTunes gift card and hthen delee the bad credit card. Yu need a valid payment method for update as well even purchasing free apps if the account was set up with a credit card.
