HT201334 Apple configurator vs Profile Manager

I downloaded apple configurator and have it working. Then I realized profile manager in OSX Server does the same thing. What is the difference, can I leave it as is? Any benefit of just using profile manager?

Apple configurator has its uses.
Apple configurator can be used as a "manual" standalone solution to manage you iDevices and AppleTVs.
Apple configurator can be used in blended approach with Profile Manager.
With Profile Manager you can manage iDevices , Macs , and I believe AppleTv over the AIR.
- Apple Configure Stand Alone.
When using Apple Configurator by itself you can , lock down an iPad in a way you see fit.
1. You can make an iDevice in "Supervise Mode" increasing restricting of your iDevice , Profile Manager cannot do this at the moment , this feature will be available in Mavericks.
2. Any future configuration changes to your iDevices , must be physically plugged in everytime for those changes.
3. You can distribute free and paid apps.
4. You can update your IOS updates all at once. When IOS 7 comes out this fall you probably dont want to touch every iDevice and update 1 at a time. You can use Apple Configurator to download the latest IOS , and any IDevice that you plugin will receive the update, this means downloading th IOS update one time on the mac, and pushing it out to whoever needs it. Profile Manager can't do this.
5. You can name several iDevices sequently. If you have a cart of 30 it will be easy to rename your iDevices. Profile Manager can't do this.
6. Apple configurator allows you to "backup and restore" its not a true complete image but its close. Profile Manager does not do backups or restores.
7. Apple Configurator can be used to erase an iDevice.
8. I'm probably missing some more features.
- Profile Manager Stand Alone
1. You can manage Macs not just iDevices.
2. You must enroll the device before you can manage it, this can be done by pushing out an email , via a website etc.
3. Everything happens over the Air.
4. When enrolling , users can use their Open Directory or Active Directory ( if your Apple server is bound to AD server ). You can also create a generic account for enrolling purposes.
5. You can wipe devices over the air.
6. You can make pass code resets for iDevices.
7. You can manage users in groups , even nested groups. I manage staff and student iDevices. Our wireless system is seperated for staff and students each wireless has its own SSID. I created 2 upper level Profile Manager Groups , one called WiFi Student and one called WiFi Staff, all my student iDevice groups are nested under WiFi Student group and all my staff idevice groups are nested. This makes managing my wifi a breeze. I also include my mifi wireless info , in case i need a backup emergency wireless.
8. Im sure theres other features.
- Apple Configurator And Profile Manager Blended
1. Push out initial wifi settings. I setup a simple wireless router to connect my devices ( there are types when I setup over 50 ipads , and our network runs out of IPs)
2. You can use Apple Configurator to push out Profile Managers "enrollment profile" to many iDevices. You dont want to enroll a full iDevice cart one at a time via a web browser.
Maverick and IOS 7
In the fall everything will change , it is amazing what we will be able to do. Over the Air Supervise Mode , Install Apps over the air with no user interaction, App codes become licenses , which are revokeable and reusable. Out of the box enrollment ... There may be no need for Apple Configurator come this fall. So many things are changing I recommend watching the new WWDC2013 Videos, specially the one on device management.
Back to original topic.
I value both products , they have their specilties and when you blended , you can get things done efficiently.

  • 1 iPad used by multiple people, configurator or profile manager?

We have one iPad that needs to be taken out by 3 or 4 people at various times, we have mountain lion server running Profile Manager.
I have just downloaded Apple Configurator to supervise the iPad to allow us to re-assign it to different people as needed.
My question is, should you set up the configuration profiles using Apple Configurator or use Profile Manager to handle this, or doesn't it make any difference?

You can all have independent AppleIDs for iCloud or iMessage etc, but share the same one for iTunes Store / AppStore purchases.

  • Why don't network volume mounts (login items) configured in Profile Manager show up

Using Lion server and Lion clients.  Bound both the server and client to Active Directory and successfully got Profile Manager up and running.  All I really need from Profile Manager is the ability to mount network volumes so when the user logs in it mounts their home directory.  Please note we do not specify any home directory paths in AD.  I can login with my AD accounts on the Lion client and get other Profile Manager settings to work, however when I try and mount a network volume via login items nothing happens.  I am using SMB for this.  If I try to manually connect to the same path via Go -> Connect To Server it works fine.  For a simple test I even created a folder on one of my Windows servers D drive and shared it and within profile manager configured it as SMB://server/share and still nothing.  I tried setting it in the Dock section as well which I read in another post somewhere but all I get is a question mark.  I have tried all variations of server name, FQDN, ip address, etc.  I know it's not permissions since it works when I try it manually so am really at a loss here.  Is there any way to log what happens at login to see if it's even trying to mount the volume?  I do know the client is getting the profile since i can see it in system preferences but it never works.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

@bkma did you find any solution? i run into the same problem.

  • Managed App Configuration using Profile Manager

    Hello,
We're using Profile Manager as the MDM server of our iPads. Everything works fine except that recently we want to manage some app configurations through MDM, but were unable to find the Managed App Configuration settings from Profile Manager.
May I know if Profile Manager supports Managed App Configuration for iOS?
    Thanks,
    Jacky

We are not running it yet but I am believe that when you setup a user in airwatch or another MDM and you install the agent on a device the user has to authenticate with AD creds, so then you can configure it to pull a cert from your SCEP server using those creds and it will then pull a user cert. instead of a generic certificate. Obviously that is a pretty dumbed down explination but in a nutshell that is how it is going to work.

  • Apple Configurator export profiles

    Hello
I have install the new Apple Configurator 1.5 and i have a profile that i want export, but i can't find how can export a profiles. I think in the older version i can do that?
    Is this not possible?
Or where can find a older version of the Apple Configurator?
    regards
    Roger

in Configurato, switch to the SUPERVISE tab, then click SETTINGS.
    Select a profile.
Below the profile list you should see the standard IOS "Export" icon - looks like a square with an arrow pointing outwards. Click it.
    That should do the trick!

  • Preparing an iOS device with Apple Configurator and Profiles

    Hi,
I am using Apple configurator 1.5 to prepare iPods with an updated iOS, backup and profile. Up until recently, I was able to install the the updates and the backup but the profile is not being send to the device. I have to stop the "prepare" setup and manually add the profile to each device.

I recommend posting in the iPhone or iPad for the Enterprise forums

  • Apple Configurator- Multiple Profiles on Multiple Devices

I'm using Apple Configurator 1.4.3. I was wondering if there is any way to install multiple profiles on to multiple devices at once.
Right now it only gives you the options of installing multiple profiles on one device OR one profile on multiple devices.

    Hey Rookeydooks,
Sounds like you have Apple Configurator set to automatically refresh when you connect iPads. To turn this off (in Apple Configurator 1.2.1), in the menu bar go to Apple Configurator -> Preferences. On the General tab, uncheck "Automatically refresh". This way, the iPad won't automatically revert back to the saved supervised backup.
Once you make your changes, you should then create a new Supervised Backup. After that, you can go back to Apple Configurator -> Preferences, and check "Automatically refresh".
    Hope this answers your question!

  • IPad/Apple Configurator/changing profiles on existing backups

Is there a way to back up an iPad that has an exisiting Apple Configurator profile applied, and then apply a different profile and restore the data without applying the original profile?  Everything I have tried seems to apply the original profile when restoring the backup.  If this is not possible, how can I apply a new profile to an iPad without the user losing all of his data??

Thanks Chris.  I have an Apple Configurator profile applied to a users iPad that blocks the App Store.  I need to place a new profile on the iPad that allows access to the App Store.  However, when I check in the device it creates a backup and the original profile is saved in the backup.  When I try to apply the new profile it is deployed to the device successfully but when I restore the backup for the user the original profile overrights the new profile.  Both profiles are present after the backup is restored.  I need to be able to place a new profile on a device AND restore data from a backup without that backup applying the original profile.

  • HT201334 Apple configurator profile question

How can you set the priority of profiles to install? Also, if one profile has a setting that overides another, which takes precidence?

Based on limited experience with multiple profiles, it appears that the most restrictive profile takes precedence.  For example, if one restricts the deleting and installing of apps and the other one allows for the deleting of apps and allows for installing apps a device with both profiles will not allow apps to be installed or deleted.

  • APN configuration with Profile Manager password payload

    hi all,
I have succesfully enrolled an iPhone using Active Directory credentials. The standard profile configures mail too, using credential given during login to /mydevices web page. My problem is that I can't configure APN (3G) settings in the same way...I can put username (%short_name%) in the APN username field, it works, but I can't find a solution for a password request (or any other way) for let users put their password for APN access during enrollment process...
Is there any way to do it?
    Thanks
    Ale

    Same issue under 10.7.4.
I pulled a console log from the F5 BIG-IP app and found this error when the iPad tries to install the VPN profile:
    com.apple.managedconfiguration.profiled profiled[1018] <Error>: VPN: couldn't create vpn interface
Doesn't realy explain WHY it can't create the interface though.

  • How do I get my outgoing email configurations for Profile Manager to work properly?

    Hey there,
The outgoing mailservers for users with a custom domain Outlook.com system keep getting @imap-mailoutlook.com appended to their outgoing mailserver, this stops the outgoing emails from working properly.
These are the email configuration settings for one of these accounts:
    Thanks so much in advance,

The problem fixed itself when I uninstalled ZumoDrive free cloud storage and also Growl the notifier application. Had to employ AppZapper to uninstall all related files.... but all worked a treat. All is back to normal.

  • Does apple provide enterprise software management?

    Hi there,
Does Apple provide software for enterprise management.  I have worked with BB 10 and Air-Watch.  however before we go spend money on 3rd Party tools, I was interested in knowing whether apple might have something like this under the covers...
    regards,
    KimO

Apple provides Apple Configurator and profilie manager ( which is part of osx server)
along with DEP which may or may not be available in your country
DEP is basically the pre enrolment of your devices for your MDM VPP etc rolled into one
VPP allows the purchase and management of apps
There are also free MDM solutions such as Meraki

  • Lion Server Profile Manager Configuration

    Hi Guys,
Currently have been testing Lion Server and Profile Manager Configuration.
    So Far Have setup
Lion with Server App and Server Admin Tools
Configured Open Directory Master and enabled SSL on LDAP
Once Configured OD has created a CA Certificate can use for Profile Manager
Have Enabled in Server.app Web and Profile manager
In SSL Certificate Configuration have set CA Certificate for Web and Enabled Apple push notifications with my apple ID
In Profile Manager Enabled Device Management and Enabled Sign configuration profiles and selected CA Open Directory Certificate Created when setting up OD Master.
On Server Originally could install Trust Profile OK and Enroll Server OK with no issues, but on any other 10.7 Devices could install Trust Profile OK but would always say unsigned and Enroll would never work or just hang.
Now Since Played around with settings on 10.7 Server can no longer enroll but trust OK.
    Questions have is
For SSL and Profile Manager to work properly as well as Certificates do you require to purchase a proper SSL Certificate or can we use the OD Master Certificate that gets created. All we are testing is on the Local LAN so don't want to get a SSL certificate from the internet.
Also why cannot 10.7 clients trust profile and enroll Devices Properly? How do I get this working properly?
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Shane

Not sure if its that as finally got Lion Server working on a VM setup so network shouldn't be an issue...
Had 1 OSX Lion Server VM and 1 OSX Lion Client VM and OSX Lion Server VM gets profile and enrolls device fine but again OSX client doesn't get enroll just sits again at installing..... even if set keychain to trust and make trust profile verified..
any other ideas? I think need to somehow get the server to trust trust profile by default instead of going to keychain all the time.

Did you get this to work in an ESXI envrionment? If so, which version are you running?

  • Apple Configurator will not restore my WiFi settings

We have 120 iPads 1's running iOS 5.1.1, I created an backup from an iPad whos Wifi setting are pre-configured and working.
I then take a backup of that iPad and attempt to restore it to several others. The Wifi setting will not carry over to the other devices.
    please help....

What I've done is create an enrolment wireless LAN
Create a profile for the enrolment wireless in apple configurator with auto join on
Along with auto device enrol and trust certificate just the bare minimum to enable enrolment
As you'd normally want to do most configuration from your mdm
In the mdm I've configured profiles for the wireless I want the device to connect to and enable auto join eg staff
And any other profiles required for the user, mail, VPN, ldap etc
Use apple configurator to prepair the device and get in enrolled
Once it's enrolled it will have whatever profiles you've configured in the mdm for the device
Turn off the enrolment wireless LAN and the device auto joins whatever wireless you've configured in profile manager
If you turn the enrolment wireless back on it won't auto join the enrolment wireless unless the wireless you've configured in profile manager and pushed to the device is off or it can't connect for some reason
If any wifi changes are nessesary turn your enrolment wifi back on and push out whatever you need
Having the enrolment wireless give you a sort of back door into he device when needed

  • Profile Manager cannot set ibooks as single app mode in iOS

Right now I had updated all my iPad to iOS 8.0.2, and the server is updated to the newest version, too.
Sadly, When I want to setup the iPad to single app mode with iBooks, I cannot find it in the list.
Is this means ibooks is no long support on the single app mode? Then why give us the new function about push ibooks?
I have try the assistant function on my iPhone (8.0.2) itself, it can be locked in iBooks.
Any one can tell me what is the problem?
    Many many thanks!

    HI Hines,
I had the same problems after the 3.0.2 update: enrolling of devices not working, unable to push configurations from Profile Manager, etc.
The update was a simple 3.0.1 => 3.0.2 on already updated OSX Mavericks to 10.9.1 and it seemed that all was ok, not like this situation: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24450438
    Services used:
    -Web
-Profile Manager with 20 iPads/iPhones already enrolled and with some in-house app pushed
I followed a solution similar to what suggested from Hines, apart from point #6. I was unable to re-download Server.app from App Store, greyed-out button.
So I was very happy to have another mac to download a fresh copy of Server.app.
    Then:
-Deleted and thrashed the old version
    -Message "all services stopped"
    -Reboot
    -Copied fresh "Server.app" to /Applications
-Started "Server.app" that made some initial auto configuration
    -Services restarted
I just had to restart the postgres service and seems that I didn't lost any data/config (I hope, I'm already checking!)

I know that Apple is essentially an hardware manufacter manly for consumer target now but that a simple minor update broke an entire software meant to be solid, like a server must be, is just plain unacceptable.
I know that OSX Server is very cheap and we can't pretend too much....but F**K...i loosed my sleep tonight!
