HT201336 Why isn't Apple time-stamping these updates?

Time-stamping during code signing ensures that the signed files are still verifiable after certificate expiration.
Apple is doing this with software distributed for Windows (e.g., QuickTime, iTunes, etc.), so why not for updates for the Mac OS?
Of course, for its Windows software, Apple seems to be using a code-signing certificate issued by Verisign.
This is a really lame problem to have that can be avoided entirely by following basic best practices for code-signing.

To clarify. IANA is a part of ICAN which has the TZ Atlas. That last update was in November 2011, which did include the Samoan time change. The problem is that Apple has not incorporated that update into their regular system updates, which is the foundation of this question and the problem that most users will have. I don't mind accessing the database myself, but it should not be the responsibility of the user to do so. Wouldn' t you agree?

  • Why isn't my time machine backup updating a new drive correctly?

I bought a new larger hard drive and I am trying to use time machine (lion) to restore the new one and copy all my files.  I made a Lion startup disk and use the disk utility to erase the new drive and then choose restore from time machine backup.  The process runs great and then after about 3 hours it finishes and restarts the computer.  Then the white screen with the grey apple and little spinner below it pop up and the spinner just spins forever.
Does anybody know what I am doing wrong?  Thanks

It looks like it tries to start loading safe mode and the loading bar appears under the spinning lines under the apple but then the bar gets almost half full and just dissapears. I'm left with just that grey apple screen and the spinning lines again.
The only other startup option that seemed to get me somewhere other than the grey screen is when I hold the "option" key and choose from the hard drive or the dvd drive to boot.  I can run from the dvd OS X disk that I made.  Is there anything I can do there?

  • Why isn't Apple selling the 2GB iPod Shuffles?

    ???
I had a 1GB one (it's a bit old now) and it finally started breaking down (it will randomly shut off during the middle of a song and then turn back on)
I don't want to buy the new one, and I would prefer a 2GB over the 1GB, but why isn't Apple selling it on their website?
(Hope this was the right place to ask this. I checked the other categories before coming here)

They're still selling refurbished 2GB shuffles in pink, green and blue...

  • Why Does My Apple Time Capsule , not share ethernet when connected to my current network?

    Hello
Thank You for taking the time to look at this , my apple time capsule will not share ethernet when joined to my current network , the only way i can get the ethernet ports working is connecting a ethernet port from my airport express to my time capsule and that enables the ethernet ports (which is fine)
So I'm Wondering Why This Works
    My Current Set up is
    Netgear Router Downstairs (Main Router)
Apple Airport Express upstairs (set to join existing network)
Belkin 8 Port Network Switch ( Ethernet cable from express to switch) (3 other devices connected to switch as well)
Time Capsule upstairs (cable running from switch to time capsules wan port)
    Hey Presto
So I'm wondering why i have to go around the houses to allow these 3 ethernet ports on the time capsule to work

Because Apple decided it should be so.. and it was!
The Airport Express can join a wireless network (non-apple) and still keep the ethernet port alive.
When Airport Extreme or TC join a non-apple wireless network, they shut off the ethernet ports.
It was a decree from on high.. there is some technical stuff about MAC addresses hidden behind the router.. but it also makes people have to buy another router they don't actually need.. hence good for the Apple bottom line. And what Apple deems is good for it.. is plainly good for you.. !!
The solution is to use the airport express downstairs.. plugged into your netgear router.. and tick allow extend network.. and set the TC upstairs to extend a wireless network. In this mode the TC will keep the ethernet active.
Isn't it fun when you have Apple working hard to close the loop.

  • Why isn't apple updating time zones

Samoa has recently changed time zones, moving to the other side of the dateline. Both my MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and my iPad 2 are not displaying correctly. I am going there on business for two months and need my Macs to be correct. My PCs runing old XP were correct on the day of the change!!! What's up Apple. I am embarrassed, and this could generate more than just passive complaints from people who have invested in your computers. I have checked sys updates daily and NOTHING.
When are you going to catch up?

  • 4S WiFi issue...why isn't Apple helping? Time to switch??

I'm looking for Apple to replace my 4S if they can't fix the the WiFi problem - has anyone had any luck in getting through to support? I'm not willing to pay $35 just to talk with someone

If your iPhone is beyond the 90-day free telephone support period and you don't have an AppleCare plan on the iPhone, then unless the problem is one that will be covered as a warranty issue you do have to pay for the support call. Otherwise you can make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple Store, if you have them in your area, and they will assist you without charge (unless the iPhone needs replacement and is out of warranty).
    Regards.

  • Birthdays in iCal, Address Book, iPhone.  Why isn't Apple listening?

I have seen this complaint over and over again. I have sent countless feedback emails. Why is it that Apple just doesn't care about these VERY BASIC things? Their attention to detail is amazing, yet they choose to ignore things that scream incompetence....
Why is it that I can sync birthdays from my Address Book in to iCal. (Awesome feature by the way) Yet I cannot set a reminder of any kind. Does Apple just think this isn't important to people? Do they just not care? I run into these types of problems with almost every application they have. There will be those one or two little things in each that begs the questions: What are they thinking? How could they have missed this? Why aren't they listening to people? Another upgrade I paid for, and it's still not fixed?
Are any of you feeling this frustration?

That's great, thanks! Worked like a charm, and all my birthdays now have a reminder. Even tells me their age...
Frustrates me that I have to pay $6, when it should already have this functionality. However, it's otherwise a useless feature, unless I am reminded of the birthdays, so I'll pay the $6. It's more important to me to know when these birthdays occur.

  • Ios 7 bugs and why isn't Apple fixing them?

I am getting really annoyed by some of the glaring bugs ever since ios 7's release, and the fact Apple has released a few updates yet still won't fix some of these bugs......Just some of the bugs I've easily noted:
    1.  When composing text messages, after you hit send, your message won't appear in the chat windows sometimes until you pull down and release the screen.
    2.  Spell check will red underline a word, but if you keep typing, the red underline will dissapear so you can't go back and review possible mispelled words.
    3.  Prior to ios 7, I used to easily be able to copy/paste pictures from the web into a chat window, and the pictures would resize themselves to fit and look properly......now the pictures are usually too large to even tell what they were, or sometimes when you try to do a copy/paste on a picture, it will just copy the URL link and not the picture itself.
These bugs are really annoying, and I'm just really baffled why Apple hasn't fixed this stuff yet!

Yeah, mine is working fine, too, an iPhone 4s with 7.0.4.  Sounds like your update did not go well, don't you hate that?  I do.  And I know it's a hassle but I'd do a restore to factory settings and let it update again to 7.0.4.  That will probably fix things nicely.  I wasn't keen on updating at all but when Apple stole 3GB of space on both my phone and iPad with an unwanted pushed update file, I eventually gave in and updated them - I at least waited until 7.0.4.  Anyway, 7 seems pretty decent and it works well enough.
Before I updated mine, I removed all added apps and other data so it started with a very empty phone. Then after the OS update I re-synced everything back to the phone.  Also, I did the update using iTunes and not the pushed update file.  It way my only way of rebelling!  lol
Do the restore and you should be good to go.

  • Why isn't apple fixing anything -

security doesn't store your settings - safari does the same thing, if you set your home page it always goes elsewhere !  I've been through every setting there is for this operating system. What really ****** me off is that you can't get your money back.

Last reply. This is not a place for flaming.
If my syntax or punctuation was bad, sorry; I meant to point out a couple of examples of current, familiar software creations that evolve rapidly and work fresh-out-of-the-box even when there are major version changes.
Then, I suggested that Apple's "quality control" folks might be paying more attention to making sure that iOS is bug-free and app-integrated than they are to insuring that OS X runs without tripping. That's a good decision on Apple's part, by the way; Apple's profits -- the ones that make the evolution (and survival!) of the Mac and OS X possible -- come from the iPhone / iPad / iPod world and not from Mac sales. Maybe, someday, Mac will have a large market share, again -- but not yet, not now, and it will require time, dollars and Jobs.
Anyway, I'll put up with some temporary wobbling from an evolving OS X in return for near-perfect iPhones and iPads and those big cash reserves that they bring to Apple, because the Mac will benefit. I know what I like; I know which computer system makes me smile while I work and supports me in producing better results faster, and its name starts with an "M," but doesn't continue "icrosoft." And if my writing doesn't please ya, well, golly, your 2,165 points indicates clearly that you contribute a lot more around here than I do.

  • Why isn't Apple adding new episodes?

There was a new episode of Disorderly Conduct - Video On Patrol, that aired several days ago (on February 20th). Apple still doesn't have it on the store yet. Why would this happen? The episode before that, the one from 2/13, Apple added right away. Have they lost the rights to this show or something? If so, then why do they have the already-aired episodes? If not, why aren't they adding the new one? I am beginning to feel ripped off, paying good money for that Season Pass and then Apple doesn't have the episodes?

Episodes are provided by the show's owners. If they don't provide an episode, or deliver a bad copy that needs to be replaced, all the iTunes Store can do is wait, which is all we can do as well. Amazon doesn't have it yet either, so I'm guessing that Viacom is behind in providing the episode.

  • Why isn't Apple acknowledging HUGE delays downloading iTunes Plus tracks?

After dozens of posts regarding these problems, still not a word from Apple, here on on the iTunes site.
And of course no fix yet.

Apple is making a bad situation worse by neither limiting demand (sales side) nor increasing supply (more servers).
First and foremost, They just cannot shut down and limit purchases, it doesn't work good of a solution. They just can't get more servers either. You don't just buy a server and hop that it solves the problem seconds after you hook it up.
And it's not a line, with first to buy being first to get downloads -- it's a mob scene as more and more people are trying to download.
A mob scene entering a pipe, thats restricted by bandwidth.
Based on my experience, I think things are getting worse -- of the 32 tracks I purchased, I got 4 in the first 24 hours and have gotten none since.
Plus tracks have only been available for less than 2 days. There are millions of iTunes customers and many of them are using a service that was highly anticipated and demanded. Its like Christmas's with people getting new ipods.
This was my first transaction with the iTunes Store, and I must say I am horrified by how poorly Apple is handling this situation. Do you complain when Best Buy or other retailers are mobbed with people after thanksgiving and after Christmas???

  • Why isn't Apple TV recognizing my account sign in

Can't get Apple TV to recognize my user name and password. Yet in order to get it connected I need an its account with I store

This is (starting with the main menu in Apple TV)
    Computers>My Library>Photos
Meanwhile, I quit iPhoto, restarted the Apple TV, and everything refreshed. The Album now has all the photos. I'm thinking that one or the other of these actions, or both, solved the issue.
    Thanks for checking in though!

  • Why isn't Apple publicizing its ownership of CUPS?

Hello. I am well aware that Apple now owns Common Unix Printing System. I'd like to know why Apple hasn't put any of that information up on apple.com (you have to get that info from CUPS' maker, now an Apple employee)? Thanks.

    What would this gain them?
Most users have no idea of what's involved in interfacing printers with computers. Even fewer have any idea what CUPS stands for.
People just expect printers to work out of the box. It's sometimes hard getting them to install a printer driver. The fact that CUPS does much of the hard work for you just brings the reality closer to the user's preconceived expectations. They don't know or care whether the technology behind it is open source, built by Apple or bought in.
