HT201343 AirPlay on MacBook Air

I have a MacBook Air mid-2012 with recently purchased Apple TV, and I don't get the Airplay icon on my menu bar. I'm able to use AirPlay from iTunes on the computer, but not for other applications. Any suggestions?

It is your OS, you show OS X 10.7.5 and you need OS X 10.8 or newer Mountain Lion which you need to purchase from the app store.

  • Airplay on MacBook Air

I DON'T HAVE AN APPLE TV
    WHAT I HAVE ARE
    1.  MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012)
    2. iPhone 5
         Model = MD297HN/A
         Version = 6.1.4 (10B350)
I have a broadband connection with a wifi Modem to which I connect both my devices.
I want to see the iPhone mobile screen on the Mac
    What I do:
    1. I log on to the wifi router from my iPhone
    2. I logn on to the wifi router from MacBookAir
    WHAT HAPPENS
@ iPhone:  AT TIMES THE IPHONE SHOWS THE "Airplay" icon when the home button is pressed. (THIS IS ANYWAY ARBITRARY. I TRIED DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS AND COULD NOT DEDUCE WHEN IT SHOWS AND WHEN NOT "EVEN WHEN IT IS SEAMLESSLY CONNECTED TO THE ROUTER AND LIVE ON INTERNET"
@ MacBookAir: Does not show the "Airplay" icon in the menu bar NOR in itunes.
    MY QUESTION:
EVEN AS I AM HAVING AN iPhone AND A MacBook Air WHICH ACCORDING TO APPLE WEBSITE CAN COMMUNICATE THROUGH "AirPlay" WHY AM I NOT ABLE TO DO IT?
NOTE: THIS IS WHAT "APPLE SUPPORT " WEBSITE TOLD ME
Requirements for AirPlay Mirroring in OS X Mountain Lion
    An Apple TV
Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) with software update v5.0 or later. See How to update Apple TV software.
Supported MacsAirPlay Mirroring in OS X Mountain Lion takes advantage of the hardware video encoding capabilities of 2nd and 3rd Generation Intel Core processors. Hardware video encoding allows AirPlay Mirroring to efficiently deliver high frame rates while maintaining optimal system performance. The following Mac models have processors that support AirPlay Mirroring:
    iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)
    Which Mac do I have?
    A network
AirPlay Mirroring requires either a Wi-Fi (802.11 a/g/n) connection or an Ethernet connection to the same local network that your Apple TV uses.
HUMBLE REQUEST   With the information given above, experts are humbly requested not to ask me
    1. What is your Apple TV Model (I don't have one)
    2. Are you connected to the same router on both the device (expalined above)
    3. Have you checked whether the devices are compatible (Apple support tells me they are, as above)
    4. You have to slide past the music play buttons beyond the "portrait lock screen icon" to see the Airplay button (All that and more have already been done.)
    5. Look at the iTune screen on your MacBook Air to see the Airplay (I have already clarified these above)
The problem is very serious. If I am not able to MIRROR MY IPHONE SCREEN ON TO MY MACBOOKAIR in spite of having devices as per Apple specifications, and performing as per Apple instructions, then Apple is cheating me.

  • Airplay with macbook air

How do you use airplay for apple tv using a macbook air

Your MacBook Air must be from Mid-2011 or later. If it is, then you also need to upgrade your OS to Mountain Lion, 10.8.

  • Step by step instructions to mirror airplay with macbook air

I would like to know how to mirror airplay on apple tv with my macbook air. I can't figure it out.

  • HT201343 Mid 2011 Macbook air will not mirror

I have a mid 2011 macbook air and a 2nd generation apple tv. All software is up to date. I can use air play in i-tunes on the macbook air, but there is no screen mirroring option in the main menu bar. Apple documentation says this model supports mirroring,(Intel Core i5) but the best I can get is "detect displays" on the top menu bar. Am I missing something?
(i-pad mirrors to ATV just fine)

    Ted,
It is as Mirror is a function of Mountain Lion.
A third party app called airparrot will also work if it is only mirror you want.

  • How to AirPlay from MacBook Air iPhoto?

Anybody know how to reproduce a video that has been downloded from iPhone into iPhoto (MacBook Air) to Apple TV?
I recently downloded all videos from my iPhone into my MacBook Air´s iPhoto to free space. When I played the videos on my iPhone, I was able to choose my Apple TV in order to whatch it on my TV.
Now that I have the video on iPhoto, when I play it, Macbook Air does not give the option to reproduce it on Apple TV. Same goes for Youtube and other videos played on my MacBook Air.

Mountain Lion (the next version of OS X) will have Apple TV mirroring built in.  Wait a couple months.

  • Airplay for Macbook Air, Airplay for Macbook Air

My Macbook Air is not working with latest apple TV

Which version of the MBA do you own and is OS X up-to-date?
Apple TV requires a Mid 2011 or newer MacBook Air with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later.
If your MBA is not new enough you can use the AirParrot application.

  • HT201343 Airplay on MacBook Pro Retina

I am having trouble getting my MacPro Retina to connect with AirPlay AppleTV. I can see the library on my AppleTV but I cannot see AppleTV on my displays. I have Home sharing on, everything is on the same wifi network using an Airport router. I have a 3rd Gen AppleTV and a 2013 MacPro 13" Retina laptop running OSX 10.9.2. Also Airplay works fine on my iPad2 and on an iMac.

    Hello,
I am having this same problem and cannot seem to find the solution anywhere.  Everything has been attempted: Router reset (even though mirroring works fine on my iPhone and iPad 3), Software is up to date on both apple TV 3 and 2012 Macbook Pro, MBP has been rebooted and so has the Apple Tv.  The support link from above is of no help because it suggest that my computer/software is not compatible, but all the prerequisites have been met. Someone please advise.
    Thanks

  • Very unreliable Airplay on MacBook Air 2013

    Hey there,
I've been, for what seems like forever, experiencing very stuttery Airplay streaming. Strangely this only happens when streaming music via iTunes. Airplay Mirroring and Airplay-Video work fine.  There is no difference between streaming to an Apple TV (3rd gen) and an Airport Express (older gen, the plug-into-outlet-thingy). The reasons why I find this strange:
    - only iTunes seems to be affected.
    - cannot be a bandwith issue since AirPlay Mirroring work well
    - iPad, iPhone, Windows Laptops are not affected
    - the MBA 2013 has WiFi-issues, but those are related to bluetooth being in the same 2,4 Ghz band. Bluetooth is disabled.
    - no issues with Ethernet (Ethernet goes to the same AirPort Express which talks wirelessly to the router, so there is a direct connection. I have to do this because in clamshell Bluetooth has to be on)
    - old router with 2,4 Ghz only. (but other devices work!)
    - Airport Express is connected via Wifi, Apple TV is via Ethernet.
    - no WiFi-pollution. Suburbs.
When streaming, sometimes the audio will stutter, sometimes stop for a few seconds, sometimes stopping completely (iTunes however says music is still playing) forcing me to either pause and resume in iTunes or, if that does not work, reconnect the AirPlay device.
One additional thing: Using iStat Menus I can see how much traffic is currently being used. Mostly this issue only happens when upload is over 120KB/s. Well that's weird.
Streaming a movie to the Apple TV uses up to 2 MB/s without problems.

I realised I had the same problem after buying a lovely new Bowers and Wilkins A7. I was devastated.
The symptoms were very similar to yours - frequent dropouts when streaming audio only. Good, strong wifi signals between devices that could 'stream' hi def video without problem and no problems when streaming from an iPad.
However, i seem to have remedied the problem and haven't had one dropout since.
    I am no techie but I think airplay sends audio and video in different ways;
Video is sent and cached - in any video sent to Apple TV, you can see the white bar grow along the bottom of the screen and, as long as this stays ahead of the point you are watching, you should never have any stuttering issues. I assume the file is downloaded and temporarily stored in the apple tv's memory. I know we use the term 'streaming' for this but it is more like a straightforward download.
I am guessing that Audio is genuinely streamed (and not cached). I imagine that the protocol had to be written like that as not all airplay speakers are going to have internal memory to download the temporary file to.
i was also assuming that, although I had a strong wifi connection between my devices, any wireless technology is vulnerable to interference from a variety of sources. This doesn't necessarily manifest itself as a weak signal but rather may cause momentary interruptions.
My iTunes library was on a Mac mini on the same floor and near to the airplay speaker. The router is on the floor below. This set up meant that the Mac mini was wirelessly uploading data next to the speaker that was downloading from the router.  I believe the Mac mini was polluting the wifi causing interruptions in the signal.
I moved the Mac mini to the floor below and connected it to the router with an Ethernet cable. I don't know if this improved the connection but I assume it  did as well as stopping the Mac mini pumping out wifi.
You mention that your problems are worse when you are uploading - could it be the device that you are uploading from is interfering with the wifi signal?
As I said above, i have not had one dropout since moving the Mac mini away from the airplay speaker.
I hope you are able to do the same.

  • Streaming iTunes rented movie with AirPlay  from MacBook Air doesn't show subtitles

In addition: the pictures weren't streamed flawlessly. Sometimes the picture totally disappeared.

Why use Airplay?  You can access the rental under the Computers tab on AppleTV - a new rentals category should appear.

  • No AirPlay icon on mid 2011 macbook air with a new Apple TV

Hi. I just bought a brand new Apple TV. I own a mid 2011 macbook air on which I've installed mountain lion OS X. both the apple TV and my macbook air are connected to the same wireless network, yet i dont have the AirPlay icon on my macbook. I'm able to play music from my mac's iTunes library, and even tough the homesharing on iTunes is on, I dont have the airplay icon so I can't stream movies\videos\pictures which are not in my iTunes library.

How do I connect my Macbook Air to tv via Apple TV and airplay ?

    Hello wayneharlow
You should see an AirPlay button in the Menu Bar in the upper right hand corner near the Date and Time. If you do not see it, then you may need to turn it on to show up there, then it is a matter of selecting the Apple TV from that drop down menu. Check out the article below for more information and troubleshooting if needed.

  • Streaming from MacBook Air to Apple TV via Airplay mirroring causes stuttering

So... I'm trying to stream video from Safari on my Mac to my Apple TV via Airplay mirroring. Most of the time, the video starts off just fine, but after a while, it begins to stutter and lag on my Apple TV. The video is playing just fine on my Mac, but as it's mirrored over to the Apple TV, it begins to stutter and lag on the Apple TV only; not on my Mac. I then quit out of Safari, turn off wifi on my Mac, restart the Apple TV and restart my Time Capsule. Once I do that, it works fine, intermittently for a bit, and then starts to give out again.
I have a 2013 13" MacBook Air with 8 GB's of RAM, an Apple TV 2 and 3, a previous generation Time Capsule (802.11n), and 50 Mbps wifi from AT&T Uverse.
What gives? What am I doing wrong? Shouldn't this stream just fine under these circumstances?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    P.

    Hey vazandrew,
Thanks for the update on the encryption piece. I didn't know that. I thought you meant something like using a VPN.
And yeah, 4 years is a while. I just figured if the drive was still humming along all should be well. I didn't think that performance could be affected in this way just from using an old router.
The issue does occur on both Apple TV's. Near the Apple TV's are just my TV sets. One ATV also has speakers nearby it. The ATV's are not sitting inside of a closed space. They're on top of the entertainment unit. The rest of the appliances are below and inside the unit.
Near the Time Capsule is the Uverse Gateway modem for my cable tv, a Motorola SB6141 modem for my internet with Atlantic Broadband (I mistakenly mentioned initially that my internet was with Uverse), an APC battery backup, my HP printer, a USB hub, a power strip, and a couple of unplugged external hard drives.
    Thank you again.
