HT201343 Display iTunes visualizer on HDTV (via AppleTV), keep Mac desktop on computer?

Can I display the iTunes visualizer on my HDTV (via Apple TV), but retain my desktop display on my Macbook Pro (Mountain Lion)?

Hello John
That setup takes a little getting use to, my suggestion is to turn mirroring off and only use extended desktop! That way you are able to set the internal display at it's native resolution and the TV at it's best resolution.
Check out: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303086
Resolutions
+"When the computer is mirroring video, it tries to synchronize the resolution of the built-in and external displays. If they can't be matched, the computer will change the resolution of both screens to the highest common resolution which may cause areas of the built-in display to be blacked out."+
Tip: On the "iMac Display Preference Panel" check the box "Show displays in menu bar" this places a little drop-down display icon up on the right side of the menu bar for fast easy access to the display preferences.

All contents are converted to be iTunes friendly (m4v). They also play properly on my iPhone 4 and iPad. How can I watch these videos on my HDTV wirelessely, will it work on AppleTV? Again, all videos were downloaded and converted to m4v and were not purchased from the iTunes Store.

Anything that is in the correct format and in the iTunes library can be streamed to an Apple TV

  • Need to move iTunes library from external hard drive to Mac desktop.

I moved my iTunes library from my Mac desktop to an external hard drive. I needed to do this so the Apple Store could do maintenance work on my computer and I didn't want to lose my files. How do I move the iTunes library back to my Mac desktop?

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • Keep Mac desktop on primary display (LCD) and Present on External?

Here's the question. Is there a way to keep my mac desktop on my primary display (the lcd on my MBP) while presenting to a projector? When I move the presentation to the external monitor and start the slide show, my LCD goes black. I know this is the "Presenter's Display." Is there a way to just have my mac desktop there instead? I'm using the newest version of Keynote.
    Thanks,
    Shawn

<<Is there a way to keep my mac desktop on my primary display ... while presenting to a projector?>>
If you mean your regular Mac desktop (and not the Keynote Presenter's Display) then the answer is no. While you are running Keynote, the two display options are as follows:
    1) in the Keynote Preferences/Slideshow menu you can assign the presentation to either your Primary display (the screen of your MBP) or a Secondary display (the projector or other monitor).
    2) In the Keynote Preferences / Presenter Display menu, there is a checkbox where you can assign the Presenter Information to the "alternate display" - i.e. the one that is NOT showing the presentation itself. If you do not check this box, the "alternate display" will be black, as you have discovered.
These are, at present, the only display options offered by Keynote.
If you would like to suggest a feature modification to Apple, you can do so at the Keynote Feedback forum: http://www.apple.com./feedback/keynote.html
I'm puzzled why you do not want to see the Presenter Information on your MBP while presenting on the projector. On my system I have checked ALL of the options for the Presenter Display so that when I give a presentation, I can know exactly what is coming-up next and when. In this way, I use the presentation itself as my "cue" sheet, rather than working from notes.
    Good luck.

  • Content available in iTunes Store NOT available via AppleTV?

I'm sure this has been answered a thousand times over, but it's perplexing me and I found I can get answers quickly from the folks here.
Why is it that movies and TV shows that show up as available for rental or purchase in the iTunes Store, don't show up the same natively in the AppleTV interface?
For example, I missed last night's episode of the show "Breaking Bad." I can find it and download it just fine from the iTunes Store in iTunes, but when I search for that same show via the on-screen search on the AppleTV I yield no results. It doesn't find the show at all or even any reference to the network AMC. I see another AMC show "Mad Men" in iTunes but again not in the search function on the AppleTV. I even checked on my iPhone and indeed BOTH shows are available to download to my iPhone!
Do these not connect to the same database of shows? Why can I download something from my computer and stream it via Airplay but not just rent the content straight from the AppleTV? Is this a limitation of iOS or does it solely have to do with streaming vs. downloading?
    Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

I see. No internal hard drive so, streaming only.
Any idea if it's up to the networks to decide if content is purchase only?
Well, that's a real bummer. Certainly limits some of the usefulness of the ATV and it's connection to the iTunes Store if has to be tethered to a PC to access all the available content.
    Thanks for the reply!

Deleting the iTunes Library.itl file.  I have a new iphone5 and have been unable to sync it with iTunes to get my previous iPhone 4 apps and info on the new iPhone 5.  I may need to update my OS X, but i don't have any money to pay for a different OS X.  Please help me get iTunes to work properly again!

  • ITunes Visualizer on External Display Blacks Out Main Display

Is it possible to have the iTunes Visualizer full screen on an external display while keeping the main display active?
In other words, I'd like to have my 2nd monitor display the iTunes Visualizer in full screen while I do work on my main screen. Every time I try this it forces the main screen to go black.
Does anyone have a solution, or is this just the limitations of iTunes and/or the Mac?
(By the way, the closest I've come is to put the iTunes window on the 2nd display, start the visualizer, and make its window as large as it will go. But, you still see the top of the iTunes chrome above and below the visualizer.)

I realise this is an old post, but have not yet seen an explanation of how I have solved this problem.
Its not a complete solution as it only works if you want to use iTunes, and does require an iPad or an iPhone.
First configure the Apple remote App on your iPhone, or iPad, or both   iPad is best, but iPhone works almost as well.
Check that you can control the music from your i'Device'
Drag the iTunes window onto the external screen/projector.   I am assuming external monitor with a different screen geometry to main screen, but if you can handle some gaps, you can mirror displays just as well.
Turn on the Visualiser - and put it into full screen.
If you can't see the external screen the following short cuts are useful.
    ⌘T - turn on Visualizer
^⌘F - turn on Full Screen
Your main screen will blank out, but you will still have full control of your music from the Remote App.
Very cool if you are having a party, and want the visualiser on the large LCD TV, or on a projector.

  • Connect Macbook to Sony Bravia HDTV via HDMI?

I am trying to connect my Macbook to a Sony Bravia HDTV via HDMI, but are unable to get one to recognize the other. I am not sure what the problem is.
I have the following set up:
    - Macbook 13" (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2, 10.4.11)
    - Apple Mini DVI to DVI adopter
    - 15' DVI to HDMI cable (from monoprice.com, same cable recommended elsewhere in these forums)
    - Sony Bravia KDL46W3000, (Full HD 1920 x 1080 p)
The Sony tv does not seem to recognise the Mac is connected (and/or vise versa). The screen is just black. Yes, I have tried all 3 of the HDMI inputs on it, Yes, I have set the tv input setting to match the corresponding input jack. HDMI does work on the tv though, as I have a DVD player connected via HDMI and that works fine.
The Mac Display preference pane does not detect the tv/monitor being connected. I normally use another external LCD monitor with the Macbook via mini DVI to VGA adaptor without any problem. I have tried various solutions others have mentioned for similar problems I found in these forms, such as turning the tv off then on, rebooting the Macbook before connecting, etc. and every other combination.
An hour on the phone with Sony tech support did not get me anywhere closer other than they say the Mac should recognize the tv as an external monitor.
Has anyone with a very similar configuration managed to get this to work? Please note, I am well aware that many many people use HDTV's as a external monitor, but this is a Sony Bravia, not a LG, or Samsung, or anything else. Also, it is a Macbook, not a Powerbook or anything else. Also, I am trying to connect via HDMI, and not VGA.
Any tips or success stories would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I hooked my Sony .Bravia 40" up to my MacBook with no problem. From your description, it sounds like you may also have a bad DVI->HDMI cable. I'm using the stock Apple miniDVI adaptor mated to my DVI->HDMI cable.
I was going to go the route you took and use the VGA port on my Bravia, but thought it might limit me to "side" letterboxes since I thought VGA basically stood for 640x480 or 4X3 format. I'm surprised that you get 1920x1080 from a VGA cable. While your picture may be great, by definition I understand high to low video quality in order is...
HDMI/DVI, Component, s-video, VGA, and lastly, A/V cables.
My DVI->HDMI cable is a cheapie that I think I bought at Frys. This type of cable is probably getting harder to find as most stuff is straight HDMI now. Anyone thinking of getting a new flat screen should strongly remember to get one with at least 3 HDMI ports unless they are into cable switch-a-roo when connecting various devices. The stock devices today are cable/satellite, Blu-Ray/HD-DVD/DVD and one for the old Mac.

  • Mac Mini Doesn't Display through Philips Tube HDTV

I have a Philips tube HDTV with a VGA connector in the back, and used the DVI-VGA connector that came with my new Mac Mini to connect. I don't have a computer monitor at home. The TV doesn't display anything.
So then I took the Mac Mini over to a friend's. He has a VGA monitor, and so he ran the Mac Mini through setup and set it to the lowest possible display settings. I came back here, rebooted and plugged it back in; still no display.
    Then I tried this:
"First thing to try is to boot the mini into safe mode by holding down the shift key as it boots up. This should allow it to boot, and then give you access to the display preference pane to adjust the settings back to those that worked.
If that doesn't work, try disconnecting the TV, and rebooting the Mac with no display attached. Once it has fully booted and enough time has passed to allow the desktop to be displayed, reconnected the TV. This should force the mini to boot into a low-res mode that works with just about anything, then when you reconnect the display, either cause it to auto-sense the correct resolutions, or give you access to display preferences."
This didn't work either. Any suggestions?

    Hi Alan,
Check your TV manual to see what resolutions your VGA/RGB connector on your TV will accept. Being a HDTV it is likely to be from 480p to at least 1080i.
You then set the resolution in your Display preference pane to 640x480 and you should get a picture on your TV. The trick is to set it when you can't see anything! Attaching to another device may not help because the Mac detects that device when you set the Display and will know its not that when attached again to your TV. When attached to your TV it is setting another resolution it thinks will work. It is clearly guessing the wrong screen resolution when you do connect it.
I overcame this situation myself using a VNC client. That requires you to have another computer you can use to control your Mac Mini via VNC. You can then access the Display pane via VNC and set the 640x480 resolution which will work.
For setting 1080i (and the VNC process) please see:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060319073027371&query=1080i%2BMac %2BMini
I am guessing you can also use an S Video adapter - available from Apple - to connect to an S Video port your TV may also have. That won't help with the VGA connection though.
    Hope this helps.

  • Hulu full-screen plays back choppily when sent to HDTV via Mind-DV to HDMI

Hi, all. I searched discussions for a solution to this to no avail. Thank you in advance for any help!
When I have my MacBook connected to my HDTV via an Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter and try to watch Hulu in full-screen on the HDTV, it drops all kinds of frames and plays back very choppily. When I watch the same program on the MacBook display at full-screen, it plays back fine.
I've tried the Hulu website, as well as the Hulu Desktop app. Both yield the same result (i.e. bad).
I set the HDTV's display settings (via OS X Display Preferences) between 720, 1080i, and 1080p, respectively, to troubleshoot. Neither 1080i or 1080p plays back well at all, but the resolution is nice. When I set it to 720, it plays back a lot smoother, but the resolution is awful.
The MacBook specs are below. Any suggestions or ideas as to why this is happening?

I updated Flash player and set the OS X display settings for the HDTV to 720p, and it is acceptable now.

  • White Screen When Trying to Play Movies / TV Shows Downloaded via AppleTV

Very frustrating, consistent issue with downloading movies or TV shows via AppleTV. Almost always results in a blank white screen with no sound and no video playing. No matter how many times I stop the video from playing, exit back out to the main menu, and restart the show, the white screen persists. The only thing that seems to fix it is to manually unplug the AppleTV, wait for 10+ sec, and then replug it in. Once AppleTV restarts, then I am able to watch the specific show I had been trying to watch. HOWEVER, the problem resurfaces as soon as I move onto the next movie or TV show.
Any suggestions on how to end this uber-annoying cycle?? I have all of the latest software downloaded. I have disconnected my iTunes library from AppleTV and then re-paired / re-synced the two (iTunes and AppleTV), and I have even tried resetting my AppleTV to factory settings (although given the volume of content I like to keep on my AppleTV, this leads to incredibly long timeframes to re-sync my AppleTV with my iTunes library). Any thoughts / suggestions / miracles would be hugely appreciated. THANKS!!!

    Hi
Can't help you I am afraid, but I can tell you that you are not alone. Keep having exactly the same problem. Rented a Movie this evening and had to pull the plug half way through the download to be able to start and watch it.
I do have the Apple TV connected through a HDMI switch and wondered if it may be copy protection HDCP or something so was going to try it on component when I find my set of cables.
Will let you know the outcome
