HT201364 How do you remove OSX from start up disk?

Trying to update to OSZ Mavrick and system is telling me that: "You need 4.93 GB of available space to download OS X Mavericks. Remove items from your startup disk to increase available space." How do I accomplish this?

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
Good Luck!

GrandPerspective is a nice app that shows a graphic representation of what's on your disk, so you can get an idea of what is taking up too much space.GrandPerspective
Don't buy CleanMyMac or any other dreck that offers to "clean" your Mac for you. Worst software ever.
If there are apps in your Applications folder you don't need any more, drag them to the trash and empty the trash.
In general, it is media files, like music, photos, and especially video that is taking up a lot of space. You can move your iTunes library, iPhoto Library, and iMovie video to an external drive.

  • HT1338 how do i remove items from start up disk to create space for updates

    Hello,
i can't update becuase i need to "remove items from my startup_disk?  how do i do that?  is that the same as my hard_disk?

Yes, your hard disk is your startup disk. How large is your disk and how much space is still available?
How many videos, music, and pics do you have on your disk? You may have to move such space hogging files to an external drive; your startup disk needs an absolute minimum of 10 - 15 GB of free/empty space at all times in order to function properly.

  • How do you remove people from start up screen?

When I turn on my computer there are 4 people to choose from to sign in. One is my son who has moved out and the other is my ex boyfriend and I do not want their start up/sign in icons on this computer anymore.(the last 2 are me and my daughter who uses the computer.) Where do I go to remove the people who will no longer me using my computer?
Also, when I went to post this question, there was iMac Intel and iMac PPC and I do not know what that means and which one i have. Can you tell me what they mean and how to find out which one I have so I know where to correctly post in the future?

Go to System Preferences / Users & Groups / Click on "Locked Padlock" and type in Administrators name and password / Click on User Account you want to remove and click the --- button / A dialog box will appear that looks like this:
Click the 'Delete the home folder' option, click on the OK button to delete that users account.

      1. See Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.

You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • How do you remove recipients from the To list?

Say you want to send an email to multiple recipients. You add a few recipients to the To list but then change your mind about including one of them. How do you remove one from the list? So far the only way I can see is go cancel the whole message and start again.

Touch the persons name you wish to remove. It will highlight in blue. Then hit the destructive backspace (delete) key on the keyboard.

How do you remove items from the assets panel that are duplicated?

If you add an item to a slideshow, you'll usually see 2 entries for that image in the assets panel - one represents the thumbnail, and the other represents the larger 'hero' image.
It sounds like you may have added the same image to your slideshow twice. You can select one of the hero images or thumbnail images in your slideshow and use the delete key to remove it. Then the extra 2 entries in the assets panel should disappear.

  • HT4314 how do you remove friends from your friend list

how do you remove friends from game center list

I am having the same problem! And I dont understand why they changed things in Game Center...I believe it was back with the ios 6 or 7 update and the whole look changed. There is no place in the app to change things if  you want to, like picture or anything. All you can do is add a "status" which I personally find ridiculous.
My bigges issue is that I have a friend who does NOT play a certain game anymore. This friend is taking up space in an area that I would like to fill with someone who DOES play and when I went through the motions of "unfriending" it takes them out of my list on Game Center but they are STILL there on the game in question. Makes no sense. Gone should be gone. There is no web site for Game Center and no real place to address these issues...

How do you remove ebooks from your ipad? Not just arcive them but get rid of them completly?

That all depends on which eBook app you're using. If you archive a book using the Kindle app, it is removed from your iPad. It's still available in your Kindle account should you ever wish to access it again but it's not taking up space on your device.
