HT201364 What is the change betwen mac book late 2006 and mid 2007 ?

What is the change betwen mac book late 2006 and mid 2007 that couses the OS X Mavericks not to run on it?

Neither the 2006 or 2007 MacBooks will run Mavericks, nor will the white plastic cased 2008 models. The oldest MacBook that will run Mavericks is the Aluminum case Late 2008 one.
Looking at the specs, I think that is because prior to the aluminum 2008 model, all MacBooks used less powerful Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) graphics processors with (at most) 160 MB of available video memory. AFAIK, neither Intel nor Apple ever released 64 bit drivers for these GMA graphics processors, so when OS X dropped support for booting into 32 bit mode in Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) that meant the newest OS these MacBooks could support was Leopard (OS X 10.7), the last version to support 32 bit mode.
It is also likely that the GMA's, with their limited memory & support for parallel processing, can't effectively support technologies like Grand Central Dispatch that system services in the newer OS versions increasingly rely on to speed up more than graphics rendering.
So, even if one could find a 64 bit driver for the GMA's, the system probably would be too slow at too many things to be practical. (Personally, I have a while 2008 MacBook, & I think the "best fit" OS for it is Snow Leopard. As far as I'm concerned, Lion is basically a beta version of Mountain Lion with too many rough edges & limited user choice to run on mine.)

  • I would to know what is the better option, mac book pro with CA on, or use with battery until it`s  discharge

    I have one doubts if is preferable  work with mac book Pro all together with battery and to connect it when discharge or  work with the connected to CA cable.
    I read in somewhere apple do not recomended work with the CA cable all the time, but in other articles said that its no problem if you realize a complete cilce of discharge an charge one time at month,
    thaks for help

    Keep it plugged in when near a socket so you keep the charging cycles down on your LiPo (lithium polymer) cells / battery, but not plugged in all the time. When not being used for several hours, turn it off.
    And best "tip" is if its near a socket,...plug it in as long as you can (especially at home) since cycle count on the battery are the "miles that wear out the tires (battery)", however again, not plugged in all or most of the time.
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
    "Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time."
    General rule to remember of Lithium batteries is:
    Never drain them LOW  &  never store them HIGH
    While cycle count is commonly seen to be the “miles” on your Lithium Ion pack cell in your Macbook, which they are, this distinction is not a fine line at all, and it is a big misconception to “count charge cycles”
    *A person who has, for example, 300 charge cycles on their battery and is recharging at say 50-60% remaining of a 100% charge has better battery usage and care than another person who has 300 charge cycles at say 15% remaining on a 100% charge.
    DoD (depth of discharge) is far more important on the wear and tear on your Macbook battery than any mere charge cycle count.  *There is no set “mile” or wear from a charge cycle in general OR in specific.    As such, contrary to popular conception, counting cycles is not conclusive whatsoever, rather the amount of deep DoD on an averaged scale of its use and charging conditions.
    (as a very rough analogy would be 20,000 hard miles put on a car vs. 80,000 good miles being something similar)
    *Contrary to some myths out there, there is protection circuitry in your Macbook and therefore you cannot overcharge it when plugged in and already fully charged
    *However if you don’t plan on using it for a few hours, turn it OFF (plugged in or otherwise) ..*You don’t want your Macbook both always plugged in AND in sleep mode       (When portable devices are charging and in the on or sleep position, the current that is drawn through the device is called the parasitic load and will alter the dynamics of charge cycle. Battery manufacturers advise against parasitic loading because it induces mini-cycles.)
    Keeping batteries connected to a charger ensures that periodic "top-ups" do very minor but continuous damage to individual cells, hence Apples recommendation above:   “Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time”, …this is because “Li-ion degrades fastest at high state-of-charge”. This is also the same reason new Apple notebooks are packaged with 50% charges and not 100%.
    LiPo (lithium polymer, same as in your Macbook) batteries do not need conditioning. However...
    A lot of battery experts call the use of Lithium cells the "80% Rule" ...meaning use 80% of the charge or so, then recharge them for longer overall life.
    Never let your Macbook go into shutdown and safe mode from loss of power, you can corrupt files that way, and the batteries do not like it.
    The only quantified abuse seen to Lithium cells are instances when often the cells are repeatedly drained very low…. key word being "often"
    The good news is that your Macbook has a safety circuit in place to insure the battery doesn’t reach too low before your Macbook will auto power-off. Bad news: if you let your Macbook protection circuitry shut down your notebook at its bottom, and you refrain from charging it for a couple days...the battery will SELF-DRAIN to zero (depending on climate and humidity)…and nothing is worse on a Lithium battery being low-discharged than self-draining down to and sitting at 0
    Contrary to what some might say, Lithium batteries have an "ideal" break in period. First ten cycles or so, don't discharge down past 40% of the battery's capacity. Same way you don’t take a new car out and speed and rev the engine hard first 100 or so miles.
    Proper treatment is still important. Just because LiPo batteries don’t need conditioning in general, does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesn’t need conditioning.
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
    Storing your MacBook
    If you are going to store your MacBook away for an extended period of time, keep it in a cool location (room temperature roughly 22° C or about 72° F). Make certain you have at least a 50% charge on the internal battery of your Macbook if you plan on storing it away for a few months; recharge your battery to 50% or so every six months roughly if being stored away. If you live in a humid environment, keep your Macbook stored in its zippered case to prevent infiltration of humidity on the internals of your Macbook which could lead to corrosion.

  • What is the Java equivalent of Visual BAsic ASC() and MID() functions

    Hello all! I just would like to ask if you have any idea on how to convert the VB ASC() and MID() functions into java. Where:
    1. ASC( ) Function - Returns the ANSI value for the leftmost character in a character expression.
    2. MID() Function - The Mid method extracts a substring of length nCount characters from a CHString string, starting at position nFirst (zero-based). The method returns a copy of the extracted substring.
    I would really appreciate your help. Thanx!

    ah yeah! sorry typo error. see, I am converting a VB method that encrypts password:
    Function EncryptText(ByVal stDecryptedText As String)
    Dim stText As String, lngCounter As Long
    Dim iTemp As Integer, lngNumber As Long
    lngCounter = 1
    lngNumber = 8
    Do Until lngCounter = Len(stDecryptedText) + 1
    iTemp = Asc(Mid(stDecryptedText, lngCounter, 1))
    If lngCounter Mod 2 = 0 Then
    iTemp = iTemp - lngNumber
    Else
    iTemp = iTemp + lngNumber
    End If
    iTemp = iTemp Xor (10 - lngNumber)
    stText = stText & Chr$(iTemp)
    lngCounter = lngCounter + 1
    Loop
    EncryptText = stText
    End Function
    I converted this function into this:
    public static String encryptPass(String password) {
    String encpwd = "";
    int iTemp = 0;
    final int lngNumber = 8;
    String stText = "";
    for ( int i = 0; i < password.length() ; i++ ) {
         iTemp = Character.getNumericValue(password.charAt(i));
         if ( i % 2 == 0 ) {
         iTemp = iTemp - lngNumber;
         } else {
         iTemp = iTemp + lngNumber;
         iTemp = iTemp ^ (10 - lngNumber);
         char c = Character.forDigit(iTemp,Character.MAX_RADIX);
         encpwd = encpwd + String.valueOf(c);
         return encpwd;
    But I'm having trouble with the encryption because it returns a different set of characters. Did I convert it right? thanx.

    I have a Late 2011 Mac Book Pro 17" and I want to install a Samsung 840 EV 2.5 1TB.  What accessories if any do I need? I want to place my order once with all that is needed to install this equipment.

    No you don't. All currently available commercial hard drives and SSDs have the same SATA connectors in the exact same place.
    As to being plug and play that is up to interpretation. The drive will plug into the cable but then you have to partition and format the drive for the Mac OS X operating system and then install OS X on it or restore from a Time Machine backup or Clone from your original drive to the SSD. Those things aren't necessarily Plug & Play. Not hard, just time consuming. Some more than the others.

  • In replacing a hard drive on a Mac book circa 2006, can you put too much hard drive space in and cause overheating? I've had 2 hard drives fail after installation in the past 3 weeks.

    I recently had my Mac book circa 2006 updated to OS Lion and in the process was told I needed a new hard drive. I just replaced my original hard drive 9 months ago and was told at that time not to put too large a hard drive on my laptop or it could overheat. Now I have gone through 2 hard drives in the past 3 weeks since updating to Lion both of which were a terabyte in size. The authorized repair shop that put both failed hard drives in insists that the size of the hard drive does not cause problems in the Mac book but I am wondering why 2 failed in such a short time when the smaller hard drive lasted. It was working when I took it in for the updates but their diagnotic test showed that the first replacement HD was failing. I'm not sure what to think now.

    Can I take that cloned hard drive and just plug it into my new Mac Mini and Viola I have two computers set up perfectly
    Yes.

    Hello,
    I am trying to connect my laptop to my TV. The computer flashes blue after I plug the cable in but the TV says there is no signal.
    I have a Mac Book Pro 2009 and a Samsung 32" Class (31.5" Diag.) 450 Series 720p LCD HDTV (2010 model).
    I am using a mini display port to VGA adapter. I have sucessfully hooked up boh devices but it stopped working after a handful of times. I was wondering if there is anything I can do to fix the problem or is my cable broken?

    Some things you can try.

    Buy an external USB hard drive and copy your data to it.  Either that or burn them all to single or double layer DVDs (depending on amount of data you have).  Or if it's really a small amount, consider putting it all on a USB memory stick.

  • I need to use a "pause" key on windows parallel, or the fn f15 key.  I have a mac book pro 13" and only see keys upto f12.  Is there a way to do this?

    I own a mac book pro 13" and I use parallels for work and desperately need the "pause" key that used to be on my PC.  It is the equivalent of the f15 key.  My keyboard only goes up to f12 and I have looked in here and on google and can't figure it out.  doesn't anyone have ideas?
    Thanks!

    I have found the solution for myself for the above.  I use a specific scripting program which is accessed by Control A. To pause it, you need to use Control B. not sure if this would work for any other application but it resolves my dilemma after hours of trying!

    You are aware that the PowerMac G5 is no longer being produced hence if you find one it will be on the used market?
    For what you are looking at doing I would suggest that you consider a Mac Pro instead.

  • What is the story on mac vulnerability? Is it serious or not serious?  If not serious, why is this not being explained?  If serious, why are Mac users not being informed of the risk?

    what is the story on mac vulnerability? Is it serious or not serious?
    If serious, why are we not kept informed
    If not serious, why is some much anxiety being created?

    IMO, it is being greatly over-blown in the media and online.
    Man in the middle attacks require the hacker to be connected to the same intranet network that your device is.  Even if they are, unless you go to a secure site and use personal data (like passcodes) they get nothing from stealing your data stream.
    If you are at your home, on your own secured intranet, then you really have virtually nothing to fear (as long as your own home network is secured and not wide open to anybody within range).  If you routinely use a VPN connection when on public wifi, again, you are fine.  Or if you use FireFox, Chrome or another browser that implements its own SSL security, then you are fine.
    The fact is, that even for those in a particular situation that is vulnerable to such an attack, most are not actually under any such attack - it is not nearly as rampant as the recent hype would have it seem to be.
