HT201401 I am trying to update my iphone4

Hi, I am trying to update my iphone 4 & is asking me to connect to Itunes, However when I do this it is saying that cannot update software as cannot connect to server, (which is odd because I am using my browser & is working fine) ..Now I cannot switch on or use my phone & it won't let me reset it.
Does anyone have any ideas

The update servers are still under pretty heavy load, so it's possible it's nothing on your end. Are you trying to do it over the air or through iTunes?

Power the phone off completely. Plug the USB end of the cord into the computer, leaving the other end unplugged from the phone. While the phone is powered off, open up iTunes, hold down the home button on the phone, and plug in the USB cord to the phone, making sure you keep holding down the home button. In about 15 seconds you should get a pop-up in itunes saying that it's detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Click 'Ok' and 'Restore'.
Your iOS update crashed and your phone is in recovery mode. The good news is that this will fix it, bad news is that unless you had everything backed up in either iTunes or iCloud, you've lost everything as your phone was wiped when the iOS update crashed.

did you try to put it in DFU mode. You will know if you are in it because instead of a plug into itunes screen, you will just get a black screen http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034 If dfu doesn't work you can get out of it buy holding home and power. Take it to apple or geek squad if I'm no help.

Since posting the above - I have now tried downloading the update on my iPhone rather than via iTunes, and its just worked and installed and seems fine! Was a lot quicker as well than the download time via iTunes

Connect it to the charger and let it charge for a while. Then try again. Never upgrade your phone without first connecting the charger. Don't let the battery go dead or the entire device could become disabled.

It says "Itunes has detected an iphone that requires to be restored and updated "When I choose Continue it starts downloading the software and when finishes it starts the restore process and it says: "Failed to upate". Iphone "iphone" was not found. Restauration could not be completed.

So it sounds as if your iPhone does not appear in iTune after a failed update to iOS, is that right? In order to get it back into iTunes you will want to use one of these articles, depending on what kind of computer you have -

Once you get ths iPhone back into iTunes, try the update again. If it fails, post back and we can continue troubleshooting from there.

So what happened to the phone during the process? It should have gone black and restarted a couple of times and there would have been a white progress bar as the update installed. Sounds to me like you've downloaded the update file but not actually installed it. The quickest way to see version of the software is installed is to go to Settings-General-About and check Version.

After downloading, I got an error 4005 message during installation and now my phone is completely wiped out; is not being recognized by my PC; and all I get on the phone is a photo of a USB plug and the iTunes symbol! Can anyone, PLEASE, help?!?

The phones in recovery mode so if yu connect it to itunes it should ask to restore it back to the last back up you have done.
