I suspect unless he had some items in iCloud backup then they are gone. Connecting an iPhone to a different library from that to which it was previously connected will result in the device asking if you want to erase it.

You are looking at the drop-down menus at the top of iTunes e.g. on a Mac :
If you are on iTunes 11 on Windows then press Alt-S and the Store menu should appear at the top.

Sync your contacts, calendar and other data on your old phone with your iCloud account by turnining sync on in Settings>iCloud. Then back up your old phone to iCloud.
When setting up your new phone, restore it from the backup of your old phone. Then sign into your iCloud account and turn on your data syncing and your contacts, calendars and other synced data will appear on your new phone.

Try logging out of your account on the phone by tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store and then log back in with the updated id so as to 'refresh' the acccount on it

Look for the button (should be at the top) that shows a crescent moon.
Tap that button. It should say "Do not Disturb: Off".

Try to change your Apple ID back to your old email address (http://appleid.apple.com) in order to set up and activate the phone. After the set up please sign out of iCloud and turn off "Find My iPhone" (Settings > iCloud) - do that on all your devices -, then change your Apple ID to your new address again and then add your iCloud account on you devices again.

Well, I originally bought an iPhone 4 in December. The home key stopped working.. had to press it more than 4o times to get it to finally respond..on several occasions. Requested a replacement phone. Received it. Now this phone gets excessively hot after using apps for approximately 5 minutes..and now the home key on this phone is doing the same thing but on the replacement phone.
