If when you connect the iPod to yur computer iTunes sees it then backup the iPod.

Please help as it is starting to look like I have wasted money
I bought an iPod touch 2nd generation and it won't let me download anything as it no been updated I know I cannot get the recent update but how do I get an old one ? , also it is not showing up in iTunes or my computer so I cannot put songs on can someone please help ??The 2G can only go as high as iOS 4.2.1. To find apps for the 2G
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Vintapps 3.1.3 - paid app.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
To update to 4.2.1
The Settings>General>Software Update comes with iOS 5 and later.
Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes as far as your iPod model allows
A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10.X. If a Mac it requires OSX 10.5.8 or later. -
I have just been given a 2nd generation ipod touch.
i have heard that there is a safety problem with a model. Could you tell me if mine is safe pse. I do not have instructions etc.
Carol,
The safety problem you may have heard about was referring to the 1st generation iPod nano, not the iPod Touch. If you are unsure of how to use your iPod Touch, see it's User Guide.

how do you fix a white screen on an ipod touch
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Ibooks for 2nd generation ipod touch
I have my daughter's old 2nd generation ipod touch and would like to use it for books and music only. The only problem is I can't get ibooks to download to it. Any suggestions?
Well you cant download books because the ibook app needs ios 5 and the 2g doesnt support later version of ios. The latest is 4.2.1.
But you can download and hear music on there. -
White screen battery icon after replacing ipod touch 2nd generation battery
Hi,
I just replaced the battery in my 2nd generation ipod touch. Now I only get a white screen with a battery icon when it is plugged into a charger. The ipod is not recognized by my computers.
Did I ruin it? Not put it together properly?
Has anyone had this experience?
Thanks
ASHi,
I have no idea what your problem could be. You could try restoring your iPod if you want to try to solve the problem: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414.
Hope this helps!

I have a 2nd generation Ipod touch. Lately the screen will not light up and also at times while typing it returns to the home screen (such as in facebook. Any suggestions?
Have you tried any of the usual 5 R's for troubleshooting. See here for more information.
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
If none of those resolve the issue (including restoring the device back to factory defaults), the backlight issue is likely hardware related, meaning you'll need to have your iPod serviced either by Apple or a third party repair company.

I have a 2nd generation ipod touch that I got from a friend. I drove all the way across the country (three day trip) and it worked perfectly. It was in a hard case and has no damages to it. I haven't dropped it or gotten water on it at all. But for some reason the screen wont turn on. It blinks on and off when I plug it into the charger (and theres like a soft clicking noise that I hear when the screen blinks) but the apple logo wont show up. And it doesn't seem to actually be charging. It doesn't seem to actually die all the way either.... It's weird.. but I know no damages have happened to it so I don't know what to do. I've tried to reset it (pressing and holding the home and power buttons) but that wont work either. Help?

- Try another cable

Hi, I've reset my 2nd generation ipod touch. However, the connect to itunes graphic appears on the screen but when I attach to my powerbook it doesn't show up either in itunes or finder. I can't be the first to have experienced this problem. please could someone advise me.
What iOS do you have on the iPod?
Did it every connect to your computer with that iOS?
The latest iOD for the 2G is 4.2.1 and that required a Mac with 10.5.8 or later.
Have you tried:
- another USB port and cable

I have a 2nd generation iPod touch. I have not updated the software from version 2.2.1. When I connect to iTunes to update to 4.2, I keep getting an error message. Has anyone else had this issue and figured out a way to fix it?
Error -1
Attempt to restore your iOS device two more times. If the issue is still unresolved, the device may need service.
The "device may need service" means a hardware problem. In that case make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
