My iphone 5 will not charge. I have tried 3 different cables 2 apple ones and a brand new other brand and my phone continues to show a black screen with a battery symbol with 3 small red bars. before i plug the cable in there is a plug symbol beneath the battery symbol. when i plug it in the plug symbol dissapears but the phone will not charge either via 3 different wall chargers i have used or via plugging the cable directly into usb on a computer. is it safe to say my phone is broken?

I just had this problem on my wife's iPhone 5. She said charged for a while with the same 3 red bars... I changed another charger and waited for a while, it become normal and charging again. Switch to other chargers, it works too. I think it is because she drained the battery completely too long and did not plug in the connector properly...

My iPhone 5 will not charge. Even though it will show that it is charging, it will often not accept a charge. Appears to be the lightening connection, because I can sometimes get it to work by playing with the connection point. Phone is 16 months old. This problem has been on-going for months, and is getting worse.
Anything I can do other than buying another new phone?

If the iPhone doesn't charge when connected to the power adaptor and when connected to your computer after trying another USB cable to rule out a problem with the cable being used, more than likely the iPhone has a hardware problem with the battery or something else.
Make an appointment at an Apple Store if there is one nearby to confirm.

Wow long time ago to find a thread...
Hold the power and home button while connected to your computer for 10 seconds. Then release JUST the power button and continue holding the home button and iTunes should recongnise the device in recovery and then hit restore and iTunes will proceed to wipe the phone and restore to the latest iOS your device can go too.

My iPhone 4S will not charge unless it is switched off. This happened suddenly with no other symptom several weeks ago. If I plug the charger in, while powered on, the phone doesn't appear to detect it has been plugged in and the battery icon doesn't change its display to show charging. Charging only happens when the phone is powered off completely.
I did some searches for this type of problem and saw it has happened to a few with earlier version iphones, but didn't see any published solutions.
A visit to the local Apple store didn't help either as I was told had to make an appointment; can't make an appointment for awhile because out of the country and no Apple stores where I'm at.
This is a very annoying problem. Anyone else have this happen and have a fix?

I got this problem solved and just want to let others know what it was.
I followed ewdel1's advice and brought my phone in to have it looked at and sure enough, was told that this is a problem others have had and it was due to a faulty integrated circuit. Luckily, I was able to take this in to be looked at when I did because my 1 year warranty was about to expire in a week.
Apple replaced my 4S with a "new" phone. The replacement looks and works good as new, so happy I didn't have to go through a hassle and the replacement was very straightforward.

I took it into the verizon store and they were not any help at all. My phone isn't under warranty anymore so they don't care. its fixed!! After posting my problem with the FROZEN ipod classic (2007) 80 gb a screen popped up with similar subjects that I did not find in my original search. 'Rich Fleming' in the community posted a suggestion to someone with a similar frozen issue and it WORKED when I tried it.
hold the 'menu' and the 'circle' buttons down at the same time, KEEP the pressed until the apple appears. and now it is working. Hope this helps others.

The troubleshooting steps below can help get your iPhone to charge.
If your battery doesn't charge, or if your device shows a low-battery image, black screen, or "accessory not supported" alert, follow these steps.
Inspect the connector at the bottom of the phone:
Make sure that there are no bent pins in the connector.
Make sure that the connector is free from debris.
If there are bent pins or debris, please contact Apple Support.
Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.
Make sure that the outlet you're using works.
Make sure that the Apple USB cable and Apple USB power adapter work.
Plug the device in to power and let it charge for up to 30 minutes. If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, try connecting to a computer's high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be on.
If the device still exhibits an issue, try turning your device off and then on again while connected to power.
If the issue is persists, please contact Apple Support.

Mine charges just fine, as does everyone's iPhone 4S that I know. Apple even sells a number of car chargers that are certified to work:

Perhaps there is a problem with your charger or the outlet you're using in your car/truck.
