HT201412 How do I unlock my screen when it displays half and the half is blocked?

My ipad was working fine this morning but now half the screen is blocked and it indicates in the upper right hand corner it is blocked but I didn't do anything to engage the blocked screen. How do I unlock it when I can shut it down or reboot it?

Just to be clear, you have to hold down on both buttons until the Apple logo appears on the screen, then you can let go of the buttons. You should not have to restart the iPad on your own. This should restart the iPad for you. Do not slide the red slider bar of you see it during this process, just ignore it and it will go away when the Apple logo appears on the screen.
Did you do it that way and the iPad still will not boot up?

You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.

You have to wipe your iPad, and restore as new. Everything you had on there is now gone, unless you had it elsewhere.

The screen should be automatically locked by the proximity sensor when you put the phone in speaking position. Make sure that there is nothing blocking this sensor (like a case for example).

Unfortunately once the iPhone is in that mode the best practice is to just restore the whole iPhone via iTunes.
The iPhone is in recovery mode. So to get it out of recovery mode and restore through iTunes is all you got to do.

This happened after I tried to get Readdledocs to open an epub file which I created in Calibre.

This is a followup to my own posting above.
Thanks to Dave Sawyer for posting information about re-downloading an app which has been deleted. I deleted the app from iTunes. Then, when I synched, iTunes asked me if I wanted the items on my ipod touch copied back into iTunes. I said yes and then synched.
Readdledocs is now working again. It is no longer frozen. However, I have learned my lesson. I will download only pdf's from now on. I don't think it works so well with epub files. The text reflow feature of Readdledocs is exactly what I need to use for my work documents on my ipod touch.
