I was recovering my iPhone 3G at iTunes after creating a back-up.
When I wanted to recover (and update to OS 3.1.3. from 3.1.2) iTunes is turning the iPhone into recovery mode, but after a few minutes the phone is keeping getting the message
the iPhone cannot be recovered: unknow error 1604
There is no futher information about this error. So now I have a non working iPhone
Please help me, what to do

It just means that you want to reset it for some technical reason by holding down the lock and home button for a few seconds till it shuts downs and the apple logo pops up which then you let go. Note: nothing on your phone will be deleted.

I clicked yes, it transferred the purchases and started downloading.. It downloaded the up date but put my phone it restore mode so now iTunes says "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode please recover to work with iTunes" so I click recover and update.. It goes to extracting files then preparing iPhone for recovery then right there I keep getting errors.. Errors such as (-1), 1603, and 1604 I've troubleshooted them and none of those steps worked.. I've called apple and they emailed me stuff that I read when I troubleshooted ... So if anybody knows how I can get the phone working again it would be much appreciated.. And if need too know I am running on windows xp with iTunes 11.0.1

FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
1. Turn off iPad
2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
5. Release Home button.
ON COMPUTER
6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
7. Select "Restore iPad"...
Note:
1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.

Iphone 5s stuck on recover mode

I have been trying to update my Iphone for the past 5 hours. I am not stuck in recover mode and all my phone says is to plug into itunes. I have tried to store my phone but every time it gives me an error. I have restarted my computer and changed the usb outlets.

My iphone 4 is in recovery mode and i don't know how to get it back working, every time I connect it to itunes a message comes up telling me that my computer has detected a iPhone in recovery mode, my only choice then is to let it update it and then to restore it but when i go to restore it, it comes up extracting iphone then an error comes up saying itunes cannot restore your iphone unknown error (21). I dont know what to do as I have tried everything like pressing the home and power button and all that. My iphone wont turn on unless charging and when it is charging all that comes up is a picture of a usb and itunes and i cannot do anything else with it, anybody any suggestions??

I tried to Update my iPhone 3G.after update it turned off and asked for Restore. I tried to restor but error occured.
Now my iPhone is not getting started
when i switch it off and then on only an image appears (SHOWING DATA CABLE HEADING TOWARDS ITUNES) for few seconds and then screen turns off.
when i hit the itune it gives me msg " iTUNES HAS DETECTED AN IPHONE IN RECOVERY MODE.YOU MUST RESTORE THIS IPHONE BEFORE IT CAN BE USED WITH iTUNES"
but when i try to restore again an error occures.

4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
5. Release the Home button

8. Use iTune to restore device

So I just did this on my iPhone 4 and it worked like a charm it unlocked it immediately. My phone was put into recovery mode and I know that not all data is deleted it just puts the phone into a sort of hibernation in order for the files to stay uncorrupted. I went to http://www.recovery-ipad.com/iphone-stuck-in-recovery-mode.html downloaded the software it unlocked my phone in a matter of minutes. Calls, messages, photos, apps, and voicemail was all there as if it never happened If you leave it unregistered you don't have to pay for it works for either windows or mac. Hope this helps!

Background: my iphone 3gs was running wonderfully - no issues at all, as normal.
I let the power run down to critical and got the empty battery screen - plugged it in and when it had enuf juice it displayed the cord-to-itunes-of-death-screen...
I had just backed up the previous to icloud so no worries... I just plugged in and thought ok this will just take a second...it completed the restore then said with a glazed amnesic font "Itunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode, and has never seen or restored this iphone ever before, since this is a stranger iphone, itunes does not trust it and must call the ipolice to check for contraban in its orifices and cavities, you must restore"... kidding of course... but
OMG at home I did the whole restore process no less than 20 times while optimizing and accounting for different variables each time (restoring on a new system with a fresh OS, trying to restore and a mac, restoring then restarting empty cache, restart unistall itunes then restore restart restore, installing an older version of Itunes and restoring. going back to Vista and restoring), and every single time it would complete the check, the update/check, the ios reinstall, and then whatever else and say "complete"... and then no icon menu would appear for the device in itunes so unplug the phone and replug and get the whole "Itunes must render restore aid" message. SO I went to the genuis bar at my local iBoutique thrice - each time the bewildered but very courteous and knowledgable genuis wanted to keep trying ... since I had been on this treadmill for about two weeks I decided each time to respect my fellow appletonians and not suck up genius time... but I really want my old 3gs back... why - I like that it amazes the youth who occaisonal are puzzled by seeing something apple that they don't recognize and in wonder and amazement at its age they learn that even though its no longer invited to iOS family gatherings that it still can call home and ask why Apple waited so long when it was a kid to give it copy-paste ability like all the other kids, then ask for money for the shrink bill.. ... . . ..

Soooooooo.... You obviously need to restore the device
It seems that you have tried several options to restore it. What I would do is leave it plugged it and hold down the Home button AND the Power button together till you see the white apple appears. Then let go of the Power button but continue to hold the home button. You should get the message in iTunes again saying that the iPhone needs to be restored. Hit OK then RESTORE.

My iMessage is switched to my icloud e-mail address and when I go to my setting to switch it back to my number, it is grayed out and not an option to click. This was working before with my number so I know that it's not from being on airplane mode. How do I get it back to my number?

They need to go into their settings>messages and make sure iMessage is on. Also they should click on the send & receive button to make sure their phone number is selected.
