HT201412 My new iPad asking for a passcode to log in, I've not set one up !!

I tried switching on an off and rebooting

Where did you get the iPad?  You can always follow this procedure
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212
but it's kind of suspect that it has a password on it.    And this prompt occurs as soon as you turn the device on, before you get to the home screen?  Did you have to "activate" the device yourself when it came out of the box?  If you got it from the Apple Store you might want to return it to them.If you got the device from a 3rd party it could have been stolen.

You may have to do this several times.
Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

  • Why is my iPad asking for a passcode at startup?

Just updated iPad to ios 7 and its now asking for a passcode. It didn't have one before and I'm now locked out. Is there a default passcode? How the **** do I get back into it?

The iPad requires a sim card to run on a carriers cellular data network. The only other way would be to connect the iPad to wifi to provide it with an internet connection.

  • New iPad asking for passcode but I never set one - how do I unlock a code never set?

Just got my new iPad yesterday, have no kids or anyone else around who would mess with it while I'm in another room - go to wash the dishes, come back and it's asking me for a passcode to unlock. I had it running all last night - turned off, turn on, sync with macbook pro, blah blah blah, everything is great until tonight. What's going on? How do I unlock it?

Is your iPad new in the sense of being brand new or is it the latest generation?
If you do not have very much on it you could connect it to iTunes on your computer (if you use one) and on the screen that pops up starting with the Summary tab click on the Restore button further down. Be sure to set it up as a new device? You will lose any saved data but at least it will unlock your device. Alternatively, you could could do it through Settings on your ipad. Either way, you my have to redownload your purchased apps again.

  • My new iPad asks for the PIN of my MacBook to sync.  How do I find the PIN?

how can I sync all my devices?  Older MacBook, iPhone5 (these two sych via wi-fi)   I want my new iPad to do the same but it asks for my MacBook PIN number.   No idea what that is.  I have it syncing with iTunes now but only pics/music.   I want some of my files on the iPad as well.   I'm a writer...want to use iPad then sync it to MacBook....thanks for any help.  (I'm not too tech savvy)

I don't believe it's asking for your "MacBook PIN number."
It would be very helpful if you would post exactly what you are doing when you get asked for information, and the exact wording of the "PIN" request.

  • New iPad asks for WiFi password. There is none. My WiFi uses WEP 128 bit encryption, but there is no "password" to enter.

Brand new to the iPad. It's asking for a password to the WiFi network in my home. There is no "password" as such associated with this WiFi network. It uses WEP 128 bit encryption where each byte is a hexadecimal number and is called a "key" Typing this lengthy thing in gives me no results. The iPad keeps on asking for a password. I have three computers and a DVD hooked to the network which has been working for a decade, so that's not the issue.
Basically I'm stuck not being able to get onto the WiFi system.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • HT1386 I have a new iPhone and want to purchase a ringtone on iTunes.  It keeps asking for answers to a question that I did not set up and don't have the answer for.  How do I get pass this dilemma?

I have a new iphone and want to purchase ringtones from itunes.  Itunes is asking answers for security questions I did not set up and I can't answer them.  How do I get past this to be able to purchase.  I can purchase songs on my MAC and sync but itunes doesn't give the option to purchase ringtones on the MAC, just the iphone.

If the email hasn't arrived after a few hours and isn't in a spam filter, you need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; this can be done by phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, or clicking here and picking a method, or if your country isn't listed in either article, filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • HT1424 Why does my new ipad ask for a SIM card when I try to start my vpn? There is no sim card in the machine but neither is there a sim card in my computer but vpn works fine?

    Model no MD369B/A

    Hi oluwaseyi,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you're seeing the error "Invalid SIM" or "No SIM Card installed," be sure to try all of these steps.
Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS.
Toggle Airplane mode On and Off.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Check for a carrier settings update. Tap Settings > General > About. If an update is available, a prompt will appear.
Remove the SIM Card and verify that it is a valid, carrier-manufactured SIM. Also verify that it is not damaged, worn, or modified. Then reinsert it.
    Restore the iPhone.
If you still are unable to resolve this issue, contact Apple support for further assistance.

  • Just got home with my ipad and its asking for a passcode which i haven't set.....any ideas please???

just got home with my new ipad and its asking for a passcode to let me in - haven't set one up, wasn't told about this in store, any ideas please???? Have tried my apple password & my passcode i use with my i-phone but none works.

Was this a used iPad? Try going to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. This will completely restore the iPad to brand new. It will erase all content, but since the iPad is brand new and you haven't made any changes to it, there is no content that will be erased. Except the passcode, of course

  • New iPad Air is asking for a passcode but didn't ask me to set one during set up, did it by thumb print

New iPad asking for passcode but didn't ask for one to be set during set up process, it only wanted my thumbprint. Is there easy way to solve?

I'm pretty sure you were asked to set up a passcode. It is required every time you power up the iPad after it has been powered down or reset.  From the manual:
"The Setup Assistant guides you through the setup process, including:
    Connecting to a Wi-Fi network
Signing in with or creating a free Apple ID (needed for many features, including iCloud,  FaceTime, the App
Store, the iTunes Store, and more)
    Entering a passcode
Setting up iCloud and iCloud Keychain
Turning on recommended features, such as Location Services
Activating iPad with your carrier (cellular models)"
If you have no recollection of it, all you can do is restore your iPad to factory settings, i.e. start again.
