I unlocked my iphone. 4 from at &t. I gave my imei number and was unlocked. When i put in a smart micro sim (philippine carrier) it says
No service. I took out the sim card and put it on, restored, updated my ois, turned off and on, but still says no service. Help please?
Then your friend hacked the iPhone and that is why you get no service message.
You have also at that moment void any support from this and other Apple sites.
Your iPhone is locked to AT&T and only AT&T can officially unlock, no one else can especialy your friend.

My iPhone 3gs was doing that after I updated also. I believe I may have fixed mine. I did a backup to iTunes, then I did a reset through iTunes (takes forever) then after that was done I right clicked where it says my phone in iTunes and hit Restore from backup, it is very important that you do not let the computer go to screen saver or to sleep during this process, I eventually had to change my computer's setting for this because it interrupts the process. And voila! It fixed mine, and I got to keep all my media, except the ringtones, they will have to be re set to your contacts individually, if you had them like that in the first place! Hope this helps!!! An now I haven't noticed any irregular battery drainage!

Did you try this, mentioned in Troubleshooting iPhone hardware
The "No Service" message appears in the upper left corner of the display
Try toggling Airplane mode "on" and "off". Wait five seconds between the off and on modes.
If that doesn't work, try another location.
If another location works, but the original location still does not, contact your carrier to report the issue.
If the message is present in all locations, have the iPhone serviced. -

The way you put it, it implies that someone has actually done "factory unlocking" on your iPhone, which is not possible. Factory unlocked iPhone is sold on Apple online stores in the U.S.

Once the iPhone 3GS is in DFU mode and plugged into iTunes, the restore and update process begins. The restores process are as followed:
Extracting software > Preparing iPhone for restore (blank screen) > Preparing iPhone software for restore > Restoring iPhone software > Verifying iPhone restore > Restoring iPhone firmware > The iPhone cannot be restored. An unknown error occurred (1).
I clicked on the more information tab and was taken to a website with some troubleshooting. I did what they suggested (based on the error #) and still no luck. I’ve tried to restore and update about 10 times now but the same message keeps coming up at the end. What should I do now?

This Error message is indicative of a Hardware issue. The device may need Service. -

As has been stated, you cannot purchase an unlocked iPhone in the US. This kbase article indicates whether iPhones sold in particular countries are carrier-locked (in some cases, you can contact the carrier for unlocking).
