HT201441 So what do you do if you find an iphone? are you just out of luck?

I found an iphone 5 a few days ago. Was told to leave it alone for a few days to see if the previous owner would send a message or something with find my iphone. And just to wait and see if the police show up if it had been reported stolen lol but now days later, still nothing, so i wiped it on itunes and now i run into activation lock o_o soooo......what now? do I now own a $300 brick? The email is blacked out so I still cannot contact the previous owner and I have no way to activate the phone. Tried to downgrade to ios 6 but that was unsuccessful. I do not wish to sell it to another unsuspecting victim lol so what do I do?

Can someone explain what is the benefit of the Find My iPhone feature?

I've upgraded my iPhone 4 to the next OS and it comes with the Find My iPhone feature. It took me a while to set it up, but it's OK, especially when it's free for those lucky iPhone 4 users. But now the question I have, what is the benefit of this feature? (Well besides spying on your girlfriend or wife) I mean, if someone steals my iPhone all they need to do is to delete the mobile me account, or better, turn this feature off. It's not even password protected. Maybe I'm just not getting something???

Obviously once my phone is lost I'm going to change my password on my emails right away and call AT&T to freeze my account.
You are assuming that you will know your phone is lost or stolen the instant it happens. Don't be so naive. Unless your iPhone is glued to your forehead it could be hours or maybe the next morning before you realize it's gone.
This is not where you should store that stuff.
Who are you to say what people should or shouldn't store on their smartphone? Above you admit you're not even aware of Apps that can store data (credit cards for instance) as securely as the banks and websites you use them at.
Apple's approach to encryption is mostly based on "security by obscurity", or, "our operating systems don't get hacked often... and thus we're safe." But this is VERY wrong!
Actually, you're wrong and clearly know very little about security PERIOD. Anyone who doesn't use even the basic security built-in to any device simply because it is an "inconvenience" almost deserves to have their identity stolen.

No device is immune to the most determined hackers but to say Apple's approach is mostly "security by obscurity" just highlights how little you know about such things.

If you activated the Find My iPhone service (in Settings>icloud), and if the device's batteries still have a charge, the device is not turned off and has not been reset and is connected to wifi, then you can try to track it and lock it. Using a computer, log into icloud.com and look at the Find My iPhone page. On a device, invoke the Find My iPhone app (get it for free at the itunes app store) and log into the icloud account.
If the device is listed as "offline", then one of the requirements listed above is not met (like being connected to wifi, or if the device was stolen and the thief reset it).
AND, always use a passcode that must be used when a user first opens the device. It may seem like a pain at first, but you get used to it.

Not sure if it would help or not, but if you haven't already done so, some things you could try are:
Tap Sign Out on the top right of the app, then sign back in
Force close the app by going to the home screen, double-tapping the home button, locating the app in the list at the bottom, tapping and holding the app until it wiggles, tapping to close it, then tapping the home button again.
Go to Settings>iCloud on your phone, turn Find My iPhone off, the after a minute or so, turn it back on.

If you have encountered activation lock, your iPad will be useless unless you can contact the prior owner. They have to give you the ID and password, or erase it and remove it from their account as explained in the article you were reading. No one else can help you with this and there is no way around it.

Why didn't Apple make it clear that if you upgrade to Mountain Lion on an older Mac, and want mirroring to work you were out of luck ?

I read the requirements to install Mountain Lion. My system quilified, that is unless you wanted all the features to work. Mirroring is not a "Key" feature that will work on older iMAC machines. What a letdown for features I wanted to really work.

I feel really let down that my $2000+ i7 8gig MacBook Pro (mid 2010) can't mirror it's screen with AirPlay, but. $600 Mac mini (2011) can.
Really? Is wireless video *that* hard? I've been a long time Apple supporter, (1991) way before iAnything, and in those dark years up until now, I always made the point that Apple hardware had longevity. Of course my MacBook is still functional, built like a tank, and I'll get years out of it, but Apple dropping support for a top level machine so soon is unsettling.
I really, really wanted AirPlay, and bought Mountain Lion right away. It wasn't until later, while waiting for the download I noticed my beloved MacBook wasn't supported. Apple really should change their advertisements to make clear it's really only for brand new machines.

Only its legitimate owner can remove an iPhone from Find My iPhone. If you did not purchase it directly from its legitimate owner you're out of luck.

I don't know why anyone would pay so much for a case and gets carried away about this 'best protection' thing. My MacBook was stolen in June. Just received an email from Find My iPhone that it's been found. What next?

My MacBook was stolen from my car in Hartford ct in June 2013. I filed a police report with the serial number. I monitored find my iPhone for several weeks with no luck. I set find my iPhone to erase my mac.
Yesterday, I received and email saying my mac was being erased. Several hours later I received an email saying my MacBook has been found along with an approximate address.
What can I do next? Can I access the camera? Can I make a message appear on the screen?

Credit card and debit card and checking and savings information is encrypted so it is possible to be hacked, but the odds are greater to get hit by the Love Boat then to have a wide scale hack.
Oh yes they do happen, Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, Target and quite a few others. But in all the years I have paid my invoice with saved card information I never been hacked.
You use good passwords and the risk is minimal.
