HT201464 Running slowly - Activity Monitor has programs I am not familiar with running...

I am trying to get my macbook pro (2010 i5 4gb) running faster like it used to. I came across the activity monitor and have noticed lots of things I don't recognise. Can someone just tell me if I get rid of them will that help or damage my computer?

Do not touch any of the 'root' applications.
I suggest that you download an Etrecheck report as a start for possible trouble shooting.

  • Activity Monitor has stopped working

    Hi,
My Activity Monitor has suddenly stopped working. Everytime I click on the icon in my dock or in Utilities nothing happens (icon in the dock bounces a couple of times then does nothing).
I find this program helpful but can't use it! Do I really have to reinstall Tiger again?
    Many thanks

    Hi there,
Many thanks. That worked a treat! I'm back in business.
Try opening the Activity Monitor again, and then open
    the Console application in the
/Applications/Utilities folder and look for lines
relating to the Activity Monitor. If you see a
message that a tool was not setuid root, use the Disk
Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to
repair your permissions. If you see another message,
post back with the text of that message.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Activity Monitor has a language issue.

Activity Monitor is not using the default language set on the system.  For some reason it is using French.
I have tried all different things to the system language settings etc but unable to work out why this application only shows up with the French language only.
I have tried many other applications and utilities and none show the same problem.
    Any help much appreciated.

The /sbin directory is similar to /bin except it contains binaries that are specifically used for system administration. (The /bin directory is one of several locations where Unix-type binaries (programs or command-line commands) are kept.) Note: /sbin & /bin are OS X system directories and are "hidden" by default. Please check out this Mac OS X Hints article on how to "unhide" these types of folders in the Finder.
launchd was introduced with OS X Tiger, but is actually a platform independent program. Its primary purpose is for the starting/stopping of daemons, applications, processes, and scripts.
In this case it is launchd is used to start the item called "EXE." You can try using the tip above to access the /sbin directory to see if you can locate this item. If you can, you should Option-click it, and then, choose the "Get Info" option to see if you can find any additional information about it.

  • Activity Monitor: activites created before upgrade not displayed

    Hi experts,
After upgrade from CRM4 to CRM7, the activity monitor (tcode S_AE2_89000019) is not working proprely. After several tests and analysis, we came to the conclusion that the logical database CRMLDB_ACT_MON used by the SAP Query of the Activity monitor is not fetching all results.
It seems that activities created after upgrade are well fetched. Old activities are not fetched
Has someone experimented the same problem?
Is there a specific action to perform on logical databases after upgrade?
Thanks in advance for your help

    Hi Manfred,
Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately we haven't upgraded to Web UI yet..
I found the solution, I'm posting it just in case someone else is facing the same problem: CRMD_ORDER_INDEX is a table that consolidate orders data in order to make reports faster in CRM. This table is not updated after Upgrade, you need to run the program CRM_INDEX_REBUILD to have this table updated.
Many reports us this table. This report update data in new and obsolete tables as well (BUT021 and BUT021_FS)

  • Activity Monitor shows Compressor functions as (Not Responding)

    Hi Forum
I have noticed in Activity Monitor that I repeatedly get these messages in red:
    CompressorJobController (Not Responding
    qmasterqd (Not Responding)
    CompressorTranscoderX (Not Responding)
    ContentController (Not Responding)
    Qmaster Task Service (Not Responding)
I have been force quitting them and then they continue to show up even if I don't have compressor open.
I compressed a 40min HD at 800kbs last night - I woke in the middle of the night thinking it would be done and it was only half way done. I opened Activity monitor to see what was going on. It said that the these functions were (Not Responding). But i noticed activity in the cpu column and in the threads and processes window. I decided to see if it was really hung. I let it go till morning. I finished in about 8 hours. Can this be true?
I am on the top of the line 17inch Macbook Pro. It seems like there are some anomalies that I don't understand. Should I disregard these recurring functions that say they aren't responding?
    thanks
    david

Here is some investigation I did, maybe someone can use this!?
While everything is running and suddenly all **** breaks loose, or rather just freezes in time.
Open Activity Monitor and select CompressorTranscoder and click the Inspect icon, you will get the process details and check the 'Open Files and Ports' tab.. There is where you will find all the files this process needs!! Here is the issue! you will notice some temporary and cache items,. open the terminal and using commands navigate to those file locations and Voila!! you see those files dont exist!! thats why this service has hanged.. The apple team needs to figure out how these files got closed without compressorTranscoder knowing about it!! BUG BUG BUG!!!

  • Activity Monitor % User and % System do not add up

Looking at my iMac i7 Activity Monitor/ All Processes/ CPU I find that the % User and % System do not add up to showing the correct % Idle.
For example, a recent screenshot shows % user = 0.81, the % System = 0.41 and % idle shows 61.25. The CPU usage graph show nothing going on and the Process Name list shows nothing unusual.
This constantly changes - sometimes the figures add up to 100% but usually the % Idle can be anywhere from 40% to a correct 98 - 99% based on nothing of any consequence running.
I look at the Activity Monitor on my MacBook and % Idle shows correct addition and a constant 98 - 99%.
    What is going on?
    Thank you.

This afternoon, it will be an entire week without a crash on my Squeezebox system!
Totally removing Intego VirusBarrier X6 from my main computer (iMac i7) finally lets me enjoy my music again.
The main problem is that X6 does not provide feedback as to what it is doing so the user cannot adjust the settings. In other words, no specific message as to what X6 just prevented.
As a crash can occur anywhere from 10 minutes to 8 hours of play time, hit or miss setting adjustments waste an amazing amount of time. This has been going on for a year with the frequency of crashes escalating.
I had already entered all my music devices on the Trusted List and had set up rules for all the ports that Squeezebox uses. Still crashed.
There is no reason why Logitech and/or Intego engineers cannot provide security setup instructions. Unfortunately, Logitech only shows security help for PCs.
Well the nightmare is over. Amazing what free time I now have.
The next three paragraphs are for Squeezebox owners and may be of some help if you are having problems:
A crash (for me) is defined in many ways. The worst crash is when the Squeezebox device shuts off and only pulling the electric plug will revive it. Another crash shows itself when the next song only plays for about 1 second and goes to the next song endlessly until the device shuts off. The Logitech manual says move the device closer to the wireless point when this happens but if they are connected by ethernet cables, this advice is useless. Another crash is when three units are synced and one of them suddenly is no longer in sync and playing a different song.
Crashes can occur when units are in sync or not in sync. Connected wirelessly or by ethernet. And when a crash occurs, the loud 'crunching' noise that occurs is not kind to the speakers.
BTW, if some devices are in sync, make sure these devices are connected the same way - either all wirelessly or all by ethernet. If you don't, you will experience sound lags of about 1/2 second. A very annoying echo effect.

  • Activity Monitor: how to quickly find "not responding" processes?

Is there a quick way, in Activity Monitor, to identify the apps/processes that are crashed/"not responding" other than scrolling down the list, looking for those highlighted in red?
If there's a particular column/attribute to sort on, I haven't figured it out.
    Thanks!

Ah, in that case, watch your CPU usage.
When Activity Monitor starts, select either +All Processes+ or +Active Processes+ in the toolbar, and sort the list by the +% CPU+ column, so the highest numbers are on top, and select the CPU tab towards the bottom.
For this purpose, also select +View > Update Frequency > Less Often+ from the Menubar.
Various processes will "spike" up and down normally as they do things, then are idle, so you need to watch it for a while and get a feel for the processes that are using the most CPU, and the +% Idle+ at the bottom.
When the slowdown occurs, see if something changes significantly, especially if the +% idle+ goes to near zero. If that happens, see what process(es) are using the most CPU.
If the process(es) involved aren't familiar to you, post their names here (and/or check this out: http://triviaware.com/macprocess/all)
You may also want to select the +System Memory+ tab towards the bottom. Keep an eye on the total of Free and Inactive memory (if they're near zero, you may need more), and the +Page outs+ (if that's high, it's another indication you may need more memory).

  • Activation date has passed, broadband is not activ...

    Hi,
My activation date was yesterday. It has now passed and, somewhat unsurprisingly, my broadband has not been activated. On the BT ordertracking page, regarding the broadband it informs me "your broadband order is in hand with a member of our team....". Regarding the phone line it says "We are currently investigating your line order with our supplier....".
Has anyone had this problem before? What causes this problem? How long should it normally take from now to get connected? It says to call customer services if it is past activation date and BT don't get in touch (which they haven't so far), but I'd prefer not to have to spend an hour of my evening on hold.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Activity Monitor says Final Cut is not responding

I'm very new to FCP and unsure as to why it does things like disappears from the Dock altogether, and loads one of my projects (the shorter one) but not the longer one at all (spinning beach ball until I have to shut computer down).
Any simple advice for a tech/computer/FCP dummy?
I'm an amateur so assume I know nothing!

This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance - you may have already addressed some of the items but it's worth checking.
Make sure you're using the latest version of the application - FCP X 10.0.5 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.5.
Check that you have at least 20% free space on your system drive. Without this much free space, the drive cannot perform correctly for video editing.
For smooth playback without dropping frames, make sure 'Better Performance' is selected in the FCP X Preferences - Playback Tab.
If you have not already done so, move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD. Make sure the drive's formatted OS Extended (journalling's not required for video). You should always keep at least 20% free space on the Hard Drives that your Media, Projects and Events are on.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you're getting crashes, you might have incompatible or corrupt media or project files. Move ALL your Events and Projects to temporary folders so that FCP X doesn't find them on launch. If it launches OK, re-introduce the Events and Projects one at a time, re-launching each time, so that you can track down the corrupt or incompatible files.
If FCP X doesn't launch (with no existing Events or Projects) I suggest you drag the application to the trash and reinstall it from the AppStore (using the same login that you used to buy it).
If you are still getting crashes, there could be some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install of the OS would be recommended.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
If your playback in FCP X is not good, I strongly recommend you use ProRes 422 Proxy - it edits and plays back like silk because the files are small but lightly compressed (not much packing and unpacking to do) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' (FCP X Preferences > Playback) just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
The downside of 'Proxy' is that it looks awful in the preview window. DON'T use Proxy when you're assessing things like video quality (especially focus) and colour correction.
If you have plenty of processor power, for the ultimate editing experience, create Optimised Media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Personally, I work with XDCAM EX and h.264 from a Canon DSLR. Both of these run fine with my system, but I do transcode multicam clips.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot. There's a great application for this, called Event Manager X - for the tiny cost it's an invaluable application.
    http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/EventManagerX/
Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • Logfile monitoring for MSSQL ERRORLOG does not work with sapccmsr

    Hi
We are running MSSQL2005 and wants to monitor the ERRORLOG for certain patterns, using the logfile monitoring feature of SAPCCMSR.
We are using logfile monitoring with sapccmsr for a lot of other logfiles without problems, but for ERRORLOG is does not work!
To be more precise: The agent does not report alerts for the text patterns specified. The agent runs fine and in RZ20 we can see that the logfile are checked every minute (but without finding the patterns).
    The strange thing is that:
    - It works for all other logfiles
    - If we do a "type ERRORLOG >> <new file>" and runs the same monitoring on this "copy" of the ERRORLOG then it works
    Any ideas?
    Best regards
    Tom Bo

    Hi,
Please look at SAP note 1013331 https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1013331.
In special the changes after patch collection 2007/5.
Practical you have to use a unicode CCMS Agent to monitor the ERRORLOG file of SQL2005, and add the "ENCODING=UTF-16" parameter in the template file....
    hope this helps..
    Regards
    Rolf

  • Activity Monitor Won't Run

Anyone else having this problem? Activity monitor will simply not run. It starts, then crashes...every time.

Me, too! Since upgrading to SL & then immediately to 10.6.2 a couple days ago.
Well, it won't run - it didn't crash, it just hung on startup. I tried repairing permissions and, after finding this thread, removed the plist file suggested, but no luck. I just realized I should check the log (Console), and found it was putting out this, over and over again:
    12/13/09 11:28:47 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.ActivityMonitor[4828]) posix_spawn("/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app/Contents/MacOS/activitymonitord", ...): No such file or directory
And exiting, then retrying every 10 seconds.
I opened the Activity Monitor package to confirm that activitymonitord is there, but upon rereading the message I realized it's telling me Activity Monitor needs to be in the utilities folder - and I had moved it into a subdirectory (to declutter my Utilities folder). It always worked there in previous systems, but apparently SL's Activity Monitor has a hard-coded address built in.
I moved AM back to where Apple wants it and it immediately opened. Don't know if this helps anyone else, but I thought I'd put this out there in case it does . . .
(Yes, I know you "should" leave programs where Apple puts them and keep your files in your user folder, but I just like to do things my way whenever I can get away with it.)

  • MacPro Quad Core 32g Ram running slow Logic using only 9g in Activity Monitor

Well its taken a while, but this is my first foray into the world of forums! I'm so hacked off with this regular problem and havent been able to find anything anywhere to solve it i thought i'd see if anyone has any similiar issues and maybe even a solve to it.
So.... im an orchestrator and producer and after my mid 2008 Macbook Pro with 8g ram started freezing up i invested in this 3 years ago -
Mac Pro 2x 2.4ghz Quad Core intel Xeon and stuck in 32gb of lovely Crucial RAM and 3 seperate internal 1TB drives with one for operating system (10.6.8), one for Audio recording/saving and one for all my sample libraries.
32gb ram - should be enough i thought!
So i regularly run at least 30 VI's - Ni The giant, Spitfire Orchestral librabies (say 12 string instruments up to 0.69g per load) LASS strings, plus perc STYLUS, ABBEY road drums, Trillian basses (acoustic/electric), ominisphere etc etc. So pretty hefty sample instruments. But theyre sooo nice!!
In addition, the 32 bit server will come alive (NOT! So unstable i find) with my Waves plugs etc.
Looking at ACTIVITY MONITOR however i might be not touching 9 gig (and sometimes even less) of usage for Logic, and only say 800MB for 32 bit server and have NOTHING else open - and what do i find .....
    - Mouse lag and cant really do anything with the mouse whilst playing the track - cant adjust volume - too slow, zooming problems
    - Takes a good 2-3 seconds for track to stop playing
Dont get System OVERLOADS so much, its just that the system goes REALLLLLY slow.
    What ive tried- - -
    - Running Mountain Lion off another drive (havent had time to install it and wanted to be sure everything worked etc)
    - Tried all audio prefs - large/small buffers/threads etc and yes i am on 1024.
in a nutshell how come with 32g RAM everything is so slow when barely using 10g of that???????
I dread getting to the end of a project cos i know im gonna be freezing so much, but with so much editing all the time for the orchestral parts i need everything unfrozen and working.
Sorry if this is long winded but wanted to describe what im experiencing.
Any feedback most welcome! Thankyou in advance.

    A few thoughts:

The 32bit server is a pita: Waves v9 are 64bit  compatible (they run fine). 32 bit VI's can be run outside Logic using Vienna Ensemble Pro (see later)

Some of these VI's are extremely CPU hungry: Abbey Rd drums for example, really do hammer the CPU. What does Logic's Performance meter show in the way of CPU load. What does Activity Monitor show regarding CPU load?
With 32G of RAM, this should not be the issue, but you might have general CPU problems (see above), and you may also have Sample disk streaming limitations if all the Loibraries you mention are on the same drive. How does Activity Monitor look regarding disk access? You might find it helpful to add a second drive and split the sample libraries across 2 for faster disk access.
I presume that you have plenty of free space on the System drive?
Logic can get sluggish if the Undo info gets way too big, and also if there are loads of regions in the Arrange: check Options:Project Information.
Many are finding some benefits (me included) by running the VI's in Vienna Ensemble Pro:
Better CPU load distribution than directly in Logic
"Persistant Samples": they can remain loaded whilst you switch Logic Projects
Logic is effectively running much less itself, so generally flies.
32bit Plugs hosted separately in VEP so no 32bit Bridge issues in Logic
Something to consider, though perhaps not yet, would be setting up a Slave computer using VEP.

  • Problems running Activity Monitor - repairing privileges

    Hello everyone,
My iBook had a strange moment, and I had to reinstall Mac OS X, which for me is still 10.3.9. However, I can no longer run Activity Monitor - the icon just bounces up and down a couple of times in the Dock, then vanishes. I've tried running it via a terminal, and received the following error message:
2007-09-18 13:16:34.841 Activity Monitor[10594] The tool is not setuid root - please repair the privileges
    What is going on?
    Thanks!

    Hi
    Welcome to Discussions.
Open Disk Utility, found in Application/Utilities, and click on Repair Permissions.
Then try to use Activity Monitor normally by clicking on its icon.
