HT201624 what causes a black screen?

I'm getting a black screen and the computer makes loud noises. Is this a bad graphics card or something else?

The issue sounds like a repair may be in order, and a technical full-diagnostic
could be a way to discover what components are involved in the noise & issue.
As much fun as it is to lug a metal box around, to/from a vehicle, and so on.
There may be a way to troubleshoot some of the cause, and that may be lengthy.
Also it may be inconclusive if there are damaged or worn parts involved. Not sure
of the command necessary to boot the computer into a mode where all the start
activities appear on the screen (verbose mode?) or if that'd help with black screen.
Does a different display port work? Is there a second graphics card installed?

Been several years since I last had a few tower Macs, none of them Intel-based.
Nearly every series has its own quirks, some induced by hardware configuration.
In any event...
Good luck & happy computing!

  • What cause the Black screen Freeze?

The screen turn black, I have to force a Restart and it doesn't work all the times. I got to reboot like 3 or 4 times. The macbook is running and the only thing i hear is a beep on all the keys.

  • What cause fatal exception screen of death

what causes fatal exception screen (curtain comes down and message in 5 languages tell you to turn off the computer) of death and can it be cured

    That is a kernel panic.
If your data is backed up, you can examine the directory to see if that caused it:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6412
If you have no peripherals attached and the hardware test is unrevealing, and no installed third party drivers, it usually indicates the RAM is bad.

  • Motherboard Tattoos causing a black screen?

My friend gave me a bunch of new PC parts, (Mobo / CPU / RAM / PCIe GPU) and after installation, I continuously get a black screen. I've ran through all the basic fixes, and still no response. I get power going (ie. Fans spinning, lights lighting up), but nothing on my screen.
I have a tech guy looking at my build now, and he was telling me about component "tattooing". Apparently, since my motherboard is HP factory issue, he says it may not work with other components that aren't HP.
From what my friend says, the components he gave me were all from the same build that worked fine in the past. Only thing new is my power supply (600w) and my HD (a clean, formatted 500GB SATA).
Would the tattoo on my motherboard be the cause of a black screen? If so, how do I go about fixing this without breaking the bank.

The only time one has to worry about the "Tattoo" is when trying to use a OEM Windows and has nothing to do with the remaining components if a retail Windows is going to be used.  If your tech guy is telling stories like that, perhaps use a different tech guy, IMHO.
Does the motherboard post?  If yes, then progress, if no then try a different video card or the onboard graphics. What motherboard model number?

What causes TV screen to freeze but sound continue on TV when using Air Play from I Phone 4?

First try rebooting ATV and router. Beyond that, it's probably something within the network, typically interference.
To get a report of the network go to istumbler (Mac) or netstumbler (PC). Look for signal strength and noise.
    If on wifi try ethernet.

  • What does the black screen with large exclamation point mean?

I'm trying to edit, or even just select a photo in iPhoto, but can't get it to come up - just the black screen with a large exclamation point. What does that mean, and how do I get back control of my photos?

It means your database is corrupted and that iPhoto has lost the link between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the actual file.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • What does a black screen with an apple symbol in the middle mean?

For 2 days my ipad has had a black screen with an apple symbol in the middle.  I tried to reset but nothing happened.  I can't even get it to power off.

Try and force your iPad into Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

  • What causes the white screen?

It started a few days ago when after leaving my ipod in the car for a few hours, the screen had turned white. No horizontal lines anywhere. No grey stripe down the middle. Just a blank white screen. I could still hear it scroll around and I even selected a song to play. However, shortly thereafter, the entire ipod froze and no amount of resetting did anything.
Once I got home, I plugged it in to itunes, restored it, and voila! It worked poifect. I had my regular black with grey apple screen back, i put music on and it played normally. Unfortunately, the next day it was deja vu. I got back to the car and there's the white screen.
After repeating the itunes restoring process however, it only became worse. Now, it is permanently stuck on the white screen. Restoring does nothing. I tried resetting, but it only gives off two short, loud beeps. In fact, holding any button gives off those beeps.
I have researched this topic for a few hours now and no one seems to know what is wrong. The only answers given are that I should send it into apple if I'm still under warranty (I'm not), or that I should get a new ipod, which is ridiculous. The ipod hasn't been damaged in any way. It's not a cracked or broken screen, or else I would still be able to play music. I did see on one forum that it could possibly be a firmware issue, but doesn't give a solution. Could it have possibly been when I updated the iTunes a few days ago? That's around the time when my problem started.
This ipod has served me so well and I hate to be disappointed with it now. Even if it can't be fixed, I would like to know what's wrong. I could call apple support, but with the answers I've seen online, there's a large probability that I would be paying $30 dollars for someone to tell me there's nothing I can do.
Does anyone have any clue what's wrong?

I am having the same problem. I just got my phone over a month ago and it just started doing this. I talked to an Apple rep last night and since I am still under warranty they will ship me a new one if I use my credit card to secure the transaction. They want to put a 499.99 pending charge on a 99.00 phone. Luckily I will be by a Apple store to exchange it but for now I have a paperweight.
You would think there would be a fix for this instead of having to return it.

  • What causes the grey screen with retart statement??

    Hello All-
This has happened 4x in the last couple days...While on the internet, I attempt to go to another site, and suddenly with no warning a grey screen slowly scrolls down the displyy with a dialog box telling me I must restart. Does anyone know what this is about? I ran Hardware Diagnostic, no problems...I ran Utility Disk, no problems. Then I ran Norton Doctor, it found a major problem on HD which it fixed. After completing all this, the problem happened again while trying to access pgatour.com!
    Thanks-
    Dominic

What you are experiencing is called a Kernel Panic.
This is a good article which has some steps you can take to troubleshoot the Kernel Panic.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Then I ran Norton Doctor, it found a major problem on HD which it fixed.
Oh, dear. This is not good. Norton Disk Doctor causes more problems for OS X than it actually fixes. It's basically a cancer to Mac OS X. I would remove it as soon as you possibly can. I would go so far as to say it may even be one of the causes of your Kernel Panics.
There was probably nothing wrong with your hard drive in the first place.
If you search through the forums, you'll see that MANY people have been burned by Norton Utilities, Norton Systemworks, and especially Norton Disk Doctor.
Those products have been discontinued by Symantec as a result of all of the reported issues with Mac OS X compatibilty.

  • What causes the black dots on the aluminium of nearly every ipad

Every ipad seems to have some sort of black dot on it, either dust trapped in the aluminium or corrosion?

Hi Gregory, yesterday evening that is exactly what I did after talking to a friend of mine. I removed the screws and removed the bottom from the laptop. I couldn't notice any space problems within the laptop. I cleaned all the edges of the body and the bottom-plate and then I attached the bottom once again back onto the body. It hasn't given the strange pressure tick ever since.
The bottom and the body aren't sealed with any form of rubber, it is purely aluminum on aluminum. If a slight speck of dust gets in there it can start making strange sounds. Especially if the space between the bottom and the body decreases if the body warms up.
My suggestion to Apple is to make a small/tiny rubber on the bottom-plates edges. I heard more unibody users have heard ticks that they couldn't explain, even the sellers of the macbook pro.
I'm still disappointed about the reaction I got from the guys at the apple store. If they would have taken 10 minutes to unscrew the bottom, just like me. They would have had a client that felt he was taken seriously and they would know what was wrong.
    Thanks Gregory for the tip.
    Regards,
    Frank
