HT201625 Error when trying to backup iTunes to external drive

I have tried to consolidate/move songs to external drive through itunes/library/organize/consolidate. At first it looks like everything is copying over  but I get this "copying files failed. The file name was invalid or  too long." How does one correct this error?

You cannot do it.. Even if you copy it right now, when you like to restore it later.. file format will not supported and you'll get error.

  • How to fix errors when trying to erase an old external drive?

I have an external drive I used to use on my windows machine, which I wanted to erase and start using on my mac.
When I plugged it in to my windows laptop, the drive was there and I could access files.
I plugged it into my iMac and again I could see the drive and the files.
I went to disk utility and tried to use the erase feature.  I got some errors and retried.  The last error was 'file system formatter failed'.
Now the drive appears to be invisible on both the mac and the windows laptop!  Is there anything I can do?

I agree with dianeoforegon the drive sounds like it is dead or dying, to be more specific it sounds like it is suffering from 'bit rot'.
You could try going to the partition tab in Disk Utility and making sure it is on GUID and not MBR or APM, then set it to a single partition and try to format it. Also you could try the security option in the erase tab to force it to write to each block as a test. The lowest level is to do no security erase but the next level up will make it write once to each block, this will be sufficient to make it test each block.
Disk formatting utilities are supposed to be able to detect bad blocks during formatting and to mark them bad and to use 'spare' blocks. Unfortunately Apple's Disk Utility seems to be totally useless at doing that. Even if you have a tool which can do this it is not wise to trust a drive with lots of bad blocks (a handful might be ok) as a large number is a sign the problem is spreading hence the term 'bit rot'.
The only tool for Mac I have seen which even attempts to map out bad blocks is Scannerz from SCSC.

  • Error when trying to copy files to external drive

When attempting to copy files to external hard drive I get a message " unable to copy some data, error code -36".
How do I find out what that error code is tring to tell me?

Sadly, I have had this issue as well. Last eyar Iit got to the point I couldn't copy at all. From what I recall, Apple told me it could be one of many things. A bad internal drive, bad permissions, a bad external drive, a bad firewire port, a bad cable, bad memory, and on and on. I never did figure it out, but I do know my hard drive did crash a month later. However, having said that, I own a new computer, and last week, it started again. Still have not figured out what is going on. Good luck.

I keep getting this error when trying to backup time capsule with time machine. The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Dan’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use.

Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time.
Pull the power cable from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cable back into the back of the Tme Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again.

Download the iTunes setup file and run it to install. Use an account with administrative rights. This can usually be achieved by right-clicking on the downloaded file and selecting Run as... or Run as Administrator. In some cases a combination of Shift or Ctrl keys may be required for the option to show, or it may not be necessary.

  • Visual C++   Errors When trying to update ITunes on Win 8.1

Visual C++   Errors When trying to update ITunes on Win 8.1

Steve, glad that you solved it yourself, but it might be worth taking on board that the steps you mention have not been sufficient for many people which is why Apple and others like myself have been offering somewhat deeper advice. Perhaps reiterating what has often already been suggested in such threads is not really necessary.
Not that you've asked for a critique of your style, but the first sentence of your post above that you are copying elsewhere is appropriate in this thread where you are replying directly to me, anywhere else it perhaps suggests that others should have been able to do likewise and comes over a tad arrogant, though I'm sure that isn't the intention. I wouldn't include it...
    All the best.

Get the following error when trying to sync itunes to Nano itunes could not coppy " Song"  to the ipod because unknown error occurred (-5000).  Any ideas?

Try my script FindTracks. Select a few of the missing files to start with then run the script. Choose No at the first prompt so that you can check how it works track by track, then confirm or edit the location of the media folder where your files are. Once you are happy with how it behaves let it process larger numbers of tracks automatically.

    Hi
    Hope you are fine there!
