  • MacBook Pro Retina stopped detecting wifi network in one location.

Hey everyone, experiencing kind of a weird problem and was hoping someone would be able to help.   I was doing some studying at a Starbucks, connected to their WiFi network when randomly my computer lost connection to their network and was no longer able to detect that it even exists. I was worried this was some sort of problem with my wifi card as it could no longer detect any networks nearby, where as before it was detecting multiple networks in the area of the Starbucks. Oddly i was still able to connect to the network on both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. Upon returning home I was relieved to find that I was still able to connect to my home wifi network. Since then i've been to many locations with my laptop but not once had an issue connecting to or detecting wifi networks, with the exception being at that Starbucks location. I've returned many times hoping that the problem would somehow fix itself, and that maybe it was just a problem with their network, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It seems to be that for whatever reason something happened to the MacBook pro while I was at that Starbucks location that has caused it to no longer detect the wifi networks there, and only there.  One possibility could be the I updated Mountain Lion to the 10.8.2 supplemental update while there, but I don't see how that would cause the problem. If anyone has any ideas as to a solution that would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

I considered the network hog point, but I don't believe that I was using any excessive amounts of bandwidth. Also, because I can no longer detect any networks at the Starbucks location (not just the Starbucks network) I don't believe that this is the problem. Also, when I updated the operating system I was sure to disconnect from wifi first, I had already downloaded the update on my home network, just had yet to restart to install it, so my security shouldn't have been an issue either.  How exactly can I go about masking my MAC address so I could double check to see if it was the network issue?
Oh, also, I booted into Windows 7 via boot camp and for some reason Windows is also unable to detect any networks while at Starbucks as well, which is even more confusing.  I don't know if it's worth mentioning, but I bought this MacBook pro retina in Canada and am now in There UK for school. I've heard that north American macs don't play well with one of the network channels that is commonly used over here, so that also may play a role in all of this. But considering that I was able to consistently use their wifi for a couple weeks with no issue, I don't see how that could be the problem. As far as WEP encrypted goes, the network is unsecured so I don't believe that's the problem.
Thanks for the response, I appreciably appreciate it!

  • MacBook can't detect WiFi

    Dear forum members,
I know that this problem is discussed in several other threads and also on other fora. However, the WiFi-problems vary in such a way that I cannot completely relate to them.
    The problem:
My macbook cannot detect our own WiFi network. It can detect other WiFi networks.
The strange thing is: we have one Windows laptop, 2 Iphones and 1 Ipad which all 'see' and connect to our WiFi network.
    Some specifications:
    - In a desperate attempt to fix the problem I have erased the HD and did a fresh installation of Lion OS. The same problems still occurs. (please no discussion on whether a fresh install is necessary on Mac's)
    - The laptop has been connecting to the same WiFi for almost a year without any problems.
    - Nothing apparent has happened in our home network that I can think of.
    - It concerns a macbook from 2008 with a fresh Lion OS installed on it.
    - The WiFi network is WPA2 protected.
    - The laptop is able to connect to our router by using a normal cable.
I am Dutch, so my apologies in advance for any grammar or spelling mistakes.
Edit: sometimes the WiFi is visible but when I try to connect, a time out error occurs.
    Michel

  • Windows Can't Detect Wireless Network

I have a windows xp laptop which can't detect the wireless network i've created with airport express- but it seems to be able to detect other networks around the area.
My two other machines (one macbook and the other xp) does pick up the network.
It seems like everything is working fine. 2/3 computers can pick up the signal, but just one of the computers can't! And i've repaired and reinstalled the driver for the wireless card, but it just won't detect the airport express signal!

    That link does not help.
The network card on my windows xp machine works fine. It can detect other networks in the building and works at other WiFi spots.
I think its something to do with somthing in XP and Vista that is preventing it from detecting Airport Express' signal.
I've increased signal robustness- still doesn't work.
I've removed the password- still doesn't work (obviously not a security problem).
I've updated the software- still doesn't work.
I'm very confused as my XP machine did detect it initially and connected to it successfully earlier this year, but it doesn't anymore.
It seems like the network can be detected by some windows machine but not others???

  • My new macbook pro can't detect wifi sometimes...

    hi guys...
i just bought late 2011 macbook pro on 27 april this year...it was succesfully connect to any wifi at anytime & anywhere...
but the problem begins when i stayed at my brothers's house...
my macbook can connect to the wifi there for the 1st time, but after i shut down my MBP and turn it ON again, it cannot detect the wifi at my brother's house, but it's weird when it can detect wifis from neighbourhood...
there' a solution for this problem...i have to repeatedly turn ON & OFF the wifi on MBP many times before it successfully connected...
but unfortunately after shutdown & turn it ON again, i've lost the connection again...what i have to do is repeatedly turn ON/OFF the wifi on MBP AGAIN until it was successfully connected...
pls help me, i already googled this problem but can't find the right solution anywhere...pls help me....thanks in advance....
    *additional note:-
    - my iphone4 & my ipad2 doesn't have the problem detecting & connecting to the wifi at my brother's house....
    - i live in malaysia, my iphone4 & ipad2 is malaysian version but my macbook pro was US version...

Just finished trying the suggestion from my Mac store "genius", and it WORKED.  He suggested that I connect to the router directly with ethernet.  His thought being that once my MBP found the IP address it would be able to find the network wirelessly.  While still connected I went to System Preferences/Network, selected WI-Fi and entered the network info (name & password).  There it was - connected.
Don't know how to make this solution available to everyone with the same problem.  If someone knows how, go for it.
Thanks to everyone who responded.  Your efforts are appreciated.

  • Why my Ipad don't detect WIFI networks?

In the WIFI Settings options, I can't turn WIFI on because the option is never kept. No WIFI networks are detected. What's the problem?

  • Brand new MBP rarely detects Wifi network- 4 other devices have no problem

I am using a 4-week old MBP with Lion that was installed via the App Store immediately after purchase.
I read up on the Wifi issues with the MacBook Pro / Lion but mine seems a bit different.
Once I get connected to Wifi, the connection doesn't drop and is not weak, however, getting the connection is the problem. Airport detects my network off the bat only about 50 percent of the time. I live in a city with about 20 networks available at any given time. When I click on the airport icon, the same 4 networks (not mine) appear immediately every time. After waiting or re-clicking, if I'm lucky mine will show up in the list after about 20 to 30 seconds, but sometimes it doesn't show up at all. Restarting the router doesn't seem to help. Sometimes rebooting the computer does, and once in a while after a reboot my MBP will find the network immediately and auto-connect... when it does that the pages load at lightning speed and it works great until the next disconnect (when it sleeps).
Could this be my router just being too old for my MacBook Pro? My iPhone, iBook, PowerBook G4 and Asus laptop have no problems.
I've tried changing the broadcast channel on the router, deleting the plists frequently mentioned in these forums, deleting and re-adding the wireless connection (many many times), moving WLAN up to the top of the list in Network Prefs, updating router firmware, routing through my iPhone (no problem)...
Please help! Should I take it back to the store for an exchange? I bought it in the US and live in Germany... not sure I can even do that.

    System Preferences > Network > Airport/WiFi
Even if WiFI is at the top, use the gear below the list of Interfaces to choose "Set Service Order"  and put Airport/WiFi at the TOP. This will make a big difference.
    Click ( Advanced )
In the WiFi/Airport pane, be sure the Networks you most want to join are listed at the top of the list, and feel free to delete any you don't care to join automatically. Once you have a good list, check [√] Ask to join networks (rather than just joining them).
In the TCP/IP pane, set IPv4 to  DHCP and set IPv6 to OFF or Manually OFF.

  • E540 Can't detect wifi visible by other devices

    Hello community,
I would like to ask for help. I am facing a very strange problem. I have windows 7 Professional 64bit  (SP1) installed Lenovo Edge e540 notebook with Intel(R) Wireless-N 7260 wiffi adapter. I am not able to even detect my home wifi network, that is detected with my other devices (another laptop, smartphone) without problems.
I have to mention, that at work, I can detect all surrounding networks (b, g and n).
I've installed Ubuntu operating system as my second OS and my home wifi is detected and I am able to connect without problems.
I tried all "standard" solutions - check wireless network switch, update dirvers from Intel, update drivers from Lenovo, complete driver uninstall and reinstall, nothing helped. My home network was never detected on windows.
I also tried to change all additional settings in wifi driver section, with no success too. Could I ask experts here, what could be wrong?
Any suggestions where to look, what to try to change would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Jiri

    Hi Jiri,
which channel is your home router transmitting on and have you tried changing this? Is the router set to broadcast the SSID?
You might also like to post which router you have and the type & model number of your E540, please do not post your serial number.

  • Can't get WiFi network printing

    hey there all,
i recently swapped out my AXg base station for the new AEBSn. i have 2 H-P printers; 1 an HP Photosmart(circa late 2006) directly connected to my DP G5. the other, a PSC(circa mid 2004) was connected to my AXg. my problem is that now w/ the PSC connnected to the AEBSn USB port, it acts as though it is connecting & starting to print, but it does 1 line then quits. i've done all the things suggested in the Airport help as well as from H-P's website.
i've dl'd & reinstalled the driver, turned things off/on, unplugged/re-plugged all to no avail. so far i can get printing from 2 of my other Macs(a MacBook & a 17" iMac CD) from the PSC, but only by having the PSC printer connected via USB through a hub to the DP G5 & used as a shared printer, but neither can see/connect to the Photosmart even though it appear as option in the Print Dialog. i need to have the Photosmart as the default/shared printer on the DP G5 & the PSC as the AEBS/WiFi network printer. this is the way things were setup w/ the AXg, but if they were even reveresd, w/ the Photosmart as the WiFi network printer & the PSC as the default/shared printer on the DP G5 that would work. also, i can not get the other Macs on my network to connect to the Photosmart to print & i can't get my 17" iMac G4 to connect to either printer. i'll keep plugging away w/ trying the "Help" in the meantime as i really need to be able to print to @ least 1 printer from all the Macs. anyone w/ more thoughts or ideas than those available in Airport Help will be greatly appreciated.
    thanks.

I am having the same problem. I have two HP photosmart printers, 7700 and 7900 series. They both worked before over the old airport extreme. Now, neither work over the new airport extreme. They act like the are starting to print and then stop. Can someone resolve this problem. They main reason I upgraded was to support multiple printers on the network. Now I don't even have one.

  • Can ATV "create" WiFi network

    Gents
I'm thinking of getting an ATV and I'm wondering if it is capable of creating a WiFi network? Currently my modem plugs into an AX (via ethernet switch) which creates my home WiFi. The AX has optical out to AV receiver. As I effectively won't need the AX for audio duties, can I drop it altogether and use ATV as my Wifi hub?

the appletv is not a router/hub or wifi extender.
it is a client device and requires you to connect it to your existing network.

  • Satellite P100-221 - How can I access WiFi networks?

    I have a P100-221.
I want to access WiFi networks.
I dont know how to do it. Which driver should I install?
    Any help please?
    Regards
    Nevzat

    Hello
If Windows recognize a WiFi network you can access and normally you will need a password. If you know this, you have access to the network.
Furthermore WLAN must be enabled with the WiFi switch on the notebook and by pressing FN+F8.
For this its not necessary to install a driver but if you need a driver you can find it on the Toshiba website.
I think you should look in the user manual. There you can a lot of informations about your notebook and informations how to access to a WiFi networks.
Sometimes its very useful the user manual.

  • Is there a limit to how many times you can extend a WiFi Network?

I assume there is a limit based on the number of IPs available but is there a limit to how many times a WiFi network can be extended or is there a limit to how many Airport Extremes can talk to each other?
I know this probably not a concern of the average home user but if you wanted to deploy these in a large building or even a very large piece of property, what's the upper limit?
I already have 3 Airport (n) routers and I was thinking of adding two more. Will i hit a physical limit or just a point of diminishing returns?

Can you clerify by what you mean when you say "remotes" sorry for my ignorance. but just trying to understand.
A remote WDS node is connected to a main or base WDS node wirelessly.
A base WDS node is connected by wire to the interenet.
A relay WDS node relays or passes the wireless signal from a base WDS node to a remote WDS node.
Clients connect to either the base or remote nodes. A relay node can be configured to accept connections from clients as well.
Also This reduction in half is this a limitation be design? Is this caused by the limit in channels or is there some sort or mechanism in place? just curious.
Think about how the remote WDS node needs to communicate with both the base station and the wireless client at the same time, so the available bandwidth is effectively halved as half is used by the remote to connect with the client and the other half is used to connect with the base node.
It's not quite the same as two wireless clients on an individual base station as they would rarely be using the full bandwidth at the same time.
