HT202213 Home Sharing
We are trying to figure out how to use Home Sharing, but can't seem to access it in either of our itunes accounts. We have turned it on for both computers, selected an account name and password, but the home sharing icon/option does not appear when itunes is open on either computer. Please help us figure out how to use this.
You won't see a Home Sharing icon on the left side of iTunes on the computer unless you have another computer sharing TO this computer.
Is the AppleTV connected to the same network?

Any help is appreciated. I'd hate to have to return Apple TV because I can't get it to sync and be forced to use iTunes Match. The Apple ID's are the same and the internet connection works.
Have you also turned on Home Sharing on your Apple TV? See "Setting up Home Sharing for Apple TV (2nd generation and 3rd generation)", http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4352
If you have turned it on and it still doesn't work, look at "Troubleshooting Home Sharing", http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972 -
I have set my kids ipods up on home sharing. Now when their games on each personal ipod, they are the same user. Is there any way of changing this? Or do I have to make each kid a seperate account and buy all of these games twice?
It doesn't look like anybody had any answers for me, but its no big deal as I solved it myself. The problem was dependent on the WebLogic's implementation of their security context and hence there probably isn't a generic solution. It turns out that WebLogic can associate a user object with each thread. If a thread does not have a user object associated with it, it uses the default user which is assigned the first time a user signs in. The problem was that the application thread was used to initially sign in, but the awt event thread was used to access the ejb. Since the awt thread had no context it would use the default.
If anyone wants to know more about the exact solution you can email me at r k e n w o r t h y@h o t m a i l . c o m (pardon the spaces - hopefully they will avoid extra spam going to my account). -
Home sharing problem: I have never set up home sharing but I feel I the concept and how it works. I recently (last 2 months or so) deauthorized, first time ever, all computers with my iTunes account. I have 3 computers authorized. I am trying to set up home sharing but get iTunes says:
"Home Sharing could not be activated because this computer is not authorized for the Apple Id "#########@###.com". Would you like to authorize now?" I click "authorize" and get the next error " You cannont authorize more than 5 computers. You have already authorized 5 computers with this Apple ID. To authorize this computer you must first deauthorize one of the other computers."
Can someone help or shed more light on my problem?
Thanks,
RichardHome Sharing is designed to work on your local network not across the internet/cloud.
Stuff is accessed under the Computers column where your local iTunes library on a local computer would appear.
Home Sharing would share your iTunes content (i.e. stuff stored in itunes on the computer, not in the cloud) with AppleTV or an iPad etc on the SAME network.
AppleTV2 will not be able to see itunes content on the work computer over the internet. It's not designed to. if the work computer was on the home network it would.
iCloud is in it's infancy and is not a mature product - iTunes TV Show purchases appear on AppleTV, but currently music does not unless you are subscribed to iTunes Match. I find this rather odd to be honest, along with the inability to buy music on AppleTV2. Movies purchased in iTunes are not authorised for iCloud viewing currently either.
Maybe it has something to do with iTunes Match 'getting in the way' - i think they assume you'll use that whereas you really want to be able to access Purchased music from the cloud without subscribing to itunes Match which is overkill for some.

I can not get my new 3rd generation apple tv to connect to my Library, both my computer and apple tv are on the same network, they both have the latest version updates and itunes is running. What else could be causing the problem?
Do you have Home Sharing enabled? Are all these devices use the same Apple ID?

After upgrading to new itunes application I attempted to set-up home sharing between my macpro lap top and my imac. Used same apple id on both machines.
When I turn on home sharing the icon shows up in menu. When I hit "done" icon disappears and there is no way to use home sharing. At no time did I have access to the itunes library in the other machine.Hiya!
Well first off... I'm baffled that you succeeded in setting up personal email without a data plan.
You need a data plan to access the BIS network which allows you web browsing (off wifi), email, BBM and the like.

HT202213 Home Sharing not showing in Windows 7
Hi, trying to set up home sharing. Have followed all the steps in setting it up but icon does not show up in the side bar or drop down menu. Have also gone to file - home sharing - turn on etc ....Any suggestions???
Howdy Jst Eph Oph,
It sounds like you have done the appropriate troubleshooting from the proper article for the Home Sharing function not appearing in the File menu of iTunes. I would next verify the version number of iTunes that is opening when you launch iTunes.
iTunes: How to find which version you are using
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1208
If it is other than 11.1.3 I would try running software update, or reinstalling iTunes from the download page here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
I was also thinking if the software is up to date, and you have re installed it but the version number is still not current, I would check the /Applications folder for mutliple copies of iTunes or launch it from there.
I would also check for 3rd party plugins that may be interfering with iTunes functions if the verison number is correct.

I am trying to move my itune to a new PC via home sharing. however technology is running away with me and i cant get it to work.
both laptops are authorised and i am logged in and my librarys are there but only 5 out of 50 albums are on new new PC and they have clouds in the corner.
I have not idea how new itunes really works as i dont really use it but i have clicked all the sharing boxes and share whole library in preferences but beyond that i am stuck.
HELP im a technophobeI'm afraid that the Mac will need to be on (and awake and with iTunes running) for you to stream from it to the iPhone via Home Sharing.

HT202213 home sharing icon not appearing
Although my home sharing in my apple tv was working up until we had problems with our internet (now fixed), I am now having problems! Although it says turn on home sharing there is no icon in my itunes library to turn on!
If the Home Sharing icon is not visible, choose Advanced > Turn On Home Sharing from the menu bar. (You can disable or enable Home Sharing for your computer using the Advanced menu.)
Note: After enabling Home Sharing, the Home icon representing your computer is no longer visible. -
HT202213 home sharing - selete a computer
there appears to be a limit of 5 computers on home sharing. One of my computers died so I cannot remove it. Bought an ipad and it is not working with home sharing. Is there a way to remove a computer from home sharing
You can only remove one computer from homesharing on the computer itself, but if you need to authorize your new computer and are unable due to already having five authorized computers, you can deauthorize all computers by doing the following:
Click iTunes Store on the left side of iTunes.
If you're not signed in to the store, click the Account button, then enter your account name and password.
Click the Account button again (your Apple ID appears on the button), enter your password, and then click View Account.
In the Account Information window, click Deauthorize All. -
