HT202213 How can I select what music to share on my devices through Home Sharing?

Hi!
I know I can use Home Sharing to share music files from my laptop to my iPad mini.
When I turn on Home Sharing it syncs all my music files to the iPad-  I do not want to share all my music files-
is there a way to share a playlist as opposed to my entire music library?
Using a Mac OS X 10.5.8 to iPad mini
Thank you!

Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
You need to upgrade at the minimum to Snow Leopard v10.6.

  • How can I select which music gets synched to my iPOD.  I am unable to select my device

I can't figure out how to select my device in order to select which music goes onto my iPod.  There is too much music in Itunes for it all to fit.

In the new iTunes your iPod should be displayed in the top right corner by the iTunes Store. Click on it and select what music you want from the Music page and sync.
if you prefer the old look
Ctrl B to turn on the top menu
    View > Show Sidebar
    View Show Status Bar
Your iPod now appears in the left hand panel

  • Can I move an iTunes library from Comp1 to Comp2 through Home Sharing?  What happens with the first sync?  What happens to 3rd party app data (specifically, game scores/levels)?

I need to move an iTunes library from Computer 1 to Computer 2.  Can I do this through Home Sharing, by dragging and dropping library items from one to the other?  The library consists of iTunes purchases, home shared items and music/movies from our personal collection.  Both computers have had all the accounts authorized, so I don't anticipate an issue there.  I'd like to do this so that my son's ipod is impacted as little as possible -- specifically, his game scores/levels and other 3rd party data remain intact after the 1st sync and the organization of his icons remain intact.
Is there a way to do this smoothly and easily, protecting his ipod data/organization?

Sorry, I obviously wasn't clear. If you replicate the library from Computer 1 to Computer 2 by copying it, then all will be well. I routinely sync my iPhone and iPad both at home and at work using a single library that I migrate between the two locations via an external drive which is kept up do date using SyncToy.
Backup the iPod touch on Computer 1.
Copy the entire iTunes folder from Computer 1 to Computer 2, replacing any existing iTunes folder on Computer 2.
Check that content is accessible in the migrated library. (Won't be a problem for a standard iTunes library where all the content is inside the iTunes Media folder which in turn is inside your iTunes folder).
Connect iPod touch to Computer 2.
    Sync.
In the unlikely event that something goes wrong (it won't) then you can connect the device back to Computer 1 to restore it.
Note device backups are not stored within the iTunes library and stay on the machine on which they were created. It is theorectically possible to migrate them but there isn't really any point. Once you have synced the iPod with the copy of the library on Computer 2 then Computer 2 will make its own backup of the device.

  • HP Envy dv4t (Windows 8) can't pick up Dell's (Windows Vista) iTunes library through home sharing, but the Dell can pick up HP's

I just got an HP Envy dv4t and it runs windows 8. My desktop, which is a Dell windows vista has all of my music on it. I'm trying to use home sharing between the two, but my HP won't pick up my dell's library, but my dell will pick up my HP's. I've tried everything imaginable and still no luck. At first, my HP would pick up my Dell library but it wouldn't load. Now it doesn't even have the library under Home Sharing. Please help!

I have been having exactly the same problem with my Fujitsu vista running desktop and my new Toshiba running windows 8

  • How can I control what music is stored on my iPhone?

Apple has decided that all the music I purchase from them is going to be constantly changing disorganized mess of deleted songs and placeholder albums and is controlled by it's own zombie scheduling. I makes me very, VERY angry. I see two options, rip all my iTunes purchases as MP3s, or buy and Android (really not serious about that, but this has been an issue since IOS7). Any other last ditch strategies I should consider???

Sounds like somethings very wrong ...
If capacity is a constraint, and things don't add up for you, you might be carrying a large photo collection in your Camera Roll -- more so than you may think.  There seems to be an issue with some users where the photo usage does not add up between what is displayed vs. the true amount of storage being taken by photos.  Some users resolved this by:
    (a) Temporarily turn off automatic date/time:  Settings/ General/ Date&Time/ Set Automatically/ OFF.
    (b) Manually set your iPhone's date and time to somewhere in or before August 2014.
    (c) Go to your Photos app and look in your "Recently Deleted" folder.  You may find a LOT of photos there that weren't before.
    (d) Re-delete all the recently deleted photos from this folder.
    (e) Go back to (a) and set your date&time automatically.
That may be your first problem.
You may also have "All Songs" turned on, which shows you all songs you've purchased even if they're not actually on your iPhone.  Go to:
Settings/ iTunes & App Store and then turn the "Show All" option OFF for both Music and Video.
Now, if you had the "Show All" enabled and selected one of these iCloud songs, they will download to your iPhone and you may have a heck of a time removing them.  If you've done this, the best method I've found is:
    (a) Set the iPhone for Manually Manage Music & Video (sounds like you already do this).
    (b) While connected to iTunes, open the contents of the iPhone and select all songs and delete them.
    (c) Manually initiate a local (not iCloud) backup of your iPhone to your computer.
    (d) Restore the iPhone, then select the backup.  Let your phone re-populate all the apps (should be no music)
    (e) Disconnect and check the Music app, verify that there truly is no music.  If there is, go to:
Settings/ General/ Usage/ Manage Storage/ Music, then swipe across "All Songs" (from right to left) and select Delete.
    (f) Reset your iPhone, or do another backup and restore.
That should clear out all music ... now re-populate your music, either manually or auto-sync all songs or partial (i.e. sync to selected playlists, artists, etc.)  If you want to autosync just part of your library, you can.  My library exceeds 100GB yet I autosync about 42GB of that to my 64GB iPhone. This is done by defining what I want synced via a series of playlists, some of which auto-populate based on my ratings and what I play (i.e. some songs drop out for awhile once I listen to them) as well as static playlist where I can manually place complete albums I want to remain.  The first auto-sync takes an hour or two, but subsequent auto-syncs only take a matter of minutes -- the whole thing doesn't re-sync each time, just what changed.

  • How can I see what music is in my iCloud account?

I uploaded a few years ago about 300CDs to iCloud and all the titles seem to have disappeared. Is there any way to find out how my 25G of iCloud storage is being used, between music, pages, numbers, mail, etc. ?

You can get summary information about your storage in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage.  You can see all of you iCloud data on your phone from within the apps that are syncing with iCloud (mail, contacts, calendars, notes, etc.).  You can also see some of this on icloud.com.

  • HT1766 How can I select an older backup to restore my device from, rather than restoring from last backup performed?

I did a backup after doing a sync with my iTunes only to find that I un-ticked the sync apps box, resulting in my apps to be deleted and most of them losing their data. I have all the data of these apps on backups I did previously to the most recent one but don't know how to select older backups.
Is their anyway to restore my device from an older backup, rather than the most recent one?

Knowing where backups are stored is one thing, interpreting them (and getting them back to your iOS device) is another!
If you did your sync, but no backup immeiately after it (for some reaon some people do) then you may have success. Without connecting your iPad to our computer, go to the screen I mentioned in my earlier post and put a tick in the box PREVENT IPOD .... FROM BACKING UP AUTOMATICALLY and click OK. Then connect your iPad and restore from the previous backp if it is there! You can then go back and change the PREVENT...... setting.
When you get this all sorted out you can consider iCloud for additional backups. If you do not use iCloud routinely then you can switch it on temporarily to do a manual backup, even multiple backups.
However, you can trick iTunes into doing additional backups by changing the device name. For instance, you can do a backup under the device name of, say, Liam's iPad, then change the iPad name to Liam's iPad 1, Liam's iPad 2, etc with a backup under each name! Whichever backup name you use in due course to restore your iPad is the name that will appear as your device name under Settings on the iPad.

  • HT3819 Can I transfer music from one computer to another via home sharing?

Can I transfer my music from one computer to another via home sharing?

So long as they are on the same wifi network, yes.
Have both computers running and have iTunes open on both computers.
Now, in the iTunes on the computer you want to transfer music to, select the library that you want to transfer music from, as per the following screenshot:
Once the other library loads, go down to the bottom of the screen and in "Show:" select "Items not in my library":
If you want to import all of the songs you can now see, head up to the iTunes menu bar and go "Edit > Select all". Then head down to the bottom of the screen again and click the "Import" button in the bottom-right-hand corner.
If there's a lot of stuff in the library you're transferring from, the transfer may take some time.

Unfortunely, all movies and songs purchased in iTunes will be lost...you'll have to purchase them again! Any applications you've purchased, you can download again for free.
Music Rescue is a program you can use to transfer any and all data (music, movies, pictures..) from your iPod to your computer, and iTunes.

  • How can I control the music that plays during Apple TV photo slide shows?

I don't want to make my parents listen to Breaking Benjamin music as they watch my photo slide shows on Apple TV. Need something more sedate. But if a B.B. song is in my iTunes music library, it is a candidate for random selection as background music for my slide shows. How do I control what music plays during Apple TV photo slide shows?

What I find is really silly, is the fact the music video's are listed under that artists albums in the Music menu. And when you go into the video 'album' (called 'Unknown' unless you change it) there is an option to shuffle the tracks. Clicking this just results in an error message. So, they should either remove that option if it is a video album, or, better yet, GET IT TO WORK. So silly of them to omit this.
    I have submitted feedback.

  • I have all my music on an external media drive that has crashed. How can I get the music of my ipod touch back onto the comupter without loosing the music when it syncs?

I have all my music on an external media drive that has crashed. How can I get the music of my ipod touch back onto the comupter without loosing the music when it syncs. in order to start rebuilding my music collection?

You should be able to recover the media with the tips in  this post from forum regular Zevoneer but I'm not sure what the implications are for your application settings. You can probably transfer your purchases into a newly authorised library, backup the device, recover any other media using third party tools, then restore the device from the backup. That should switch the assocation of the device to the new library but it is not something I've personally tested.
When you get it all working, make a backup!

  • I purchased and downloaded a full album on itunes today, when i got home i updated my phone and lost it all, how can i get this music back without paying for it again

Today while driving home from vacation i purchased and downloaded the new Nichleback CD, when i got home, i plugged my phone into my computer to update everything and it pulled up a message saying something like "this computer has recognized an iPhone that is in memory update, you will need to restore the phone" or something similar to that, it had a picture of the power cord plugging into iTunes on the screen and i couldn't get rid of it, so i had to plug it in and restore everything, when it was done i noticed that not only did i loose the new CD that i had just purchased today but i lost all of the music that i've purchased since the last update. How can i restore this music without purchasing it all again?

Media should be included with the backup of the computer that all users should be creating on a regular basis as part of basic computer/data maintenance.
In the event that you do not have a backup (stop being lazy.... keep backups of YOUR data and other important files)
If you are in the US and running iTunes 10.3 or later, it is possible to redownload music via iCloud from purchased history.
If you are not in the US or for some reason cannot run iTunes 10.3 or later, contact iTunes customer support and ask very nicely for the opportunity to redownload the content.  They are not required to provide this opportunity.
It is also possible to transfer content from an iDevice that was purchased via iTunes.  On the new computer, sign into the iTunes account, authorize the computer, connect the device then select File > Transfer Purchases.
The simplest method of all is to transfer or copy the media (and other important files) from the old computer or the backup of the old computer.  Typing "move itunes library" into the search bar here or into google will reveal step by step instructions on how to do this.
