HT202380 Do I have to check "Ignore ownership on this volume" again, after copying is done?

Do I have to check "Ignore ownership on this volume" again, after copying is done? Thanks. Alex

Sorry I thought the context was clear. I followed the instructions on how to transfer a timemachine backup from one disk to another (linked above). One step in the howto is to uncheck "Ignore ownership on this volume". I was wondering if it is important to check it afterwards.

  • Set "Ignore ownership on this volume" to be on by default

Hello, I have a MacPro loaded with 10.5 server that I use frequently for backing up customer data via USB or Firewire. The MacPro is in a locked room and is relatively isolated from the network. I am looking for a way to set "Ignore ownership on this volume" to be checked by default for any/all drives I plug into the machine. This would be a huge time save for me. Thank you!

    Hi Alfredo,
I can't test this at the moment, but I have a theory!
One would think that setting iTunes to a FW Dive would need to change the Permissions to control Sharing of iTunes content.
My iTunes was set to another internal drive and had the same Ignore unchecked and owned by system, I unchecked it and changed it back to my boot drive, the Get Info change Me to owner & kept the Ignore checked... setting it back to the other Drive did not change those settings, but I suspect that a Reboot would... how else could Apple control Sharing of songs?

  • How to "Ignore Ownership On This Volume" When Saving File to External Hard Drive?

    Hello,
I just switched over from Photoshop CS3 pc platform to the MAC version, and it gives me the message that I can't save what I've I've just done - I have my photo files on an external Seagate Free Agent Hard Disk - When I followed the instructions to "Select Disk/Choose File/Get Info/Click Disclosure Triangle next to Sharing & Permissions" - Then after I did all of this, there was no option to select "Ignore ownership on this volume." Instead, the only thing it said was, This is read only."
Surely, I don't have to give permission to save each and every file - This is a very serious hobby for me, but I am doing it out of my home, and no one else at this time uses my computer.
Before submitting this request, I called Apple support first, and they tried doing a Disk scan and repair of the permissions, but this was only for the internal Macintosh HD drive, not the external one that is related to this incident.
Thanks For Your Help ahead of time!
Also, this might should be saved for another separate question, but I had to set change my resolution to 1920 X 1200 - The text, etc, was much too large for especially doing anything in Photoshop. This new iMac has a 3.06/4 GB RAM/1 TB internal HD/NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Graphics Card.

    Buko-
To tell you the truth - and I apologize for that statement - I woke up early this morning, and it hit me that I took what Lundberg02 said earlier the wrong way! So, I couldn't wait to get back on and apologize to him and all of you - And I hope that you will forgive me.
When I think about it now, perhaps he is right - This may not have been a pertinent place for me to insert this question. But after spending a long time with Apple about it, and then Seagate - I decided that the only other place I could go was to ask you guys. I thought, perhaps someone here had encountered the same problem when switching from pc to Mac platform. But perhaps I shouldn't have.
Actually, Seagate - I think - solved the problem, at least this erase procedure was working after two hours - until I decided that I'd cancel it, and take it back to Costco for a refund, which I did. And the Seagate rep told me that he didn't blame me, because the drive was getting a little old, and if I used their warranty program, I'd probably gotten a refurbished one, anyway. So, all of this trouble I've put you good people through has gone "for naught".
But hopefully, you'll be acceptable in the future when I ask more applicable questions, when my wheels really start spinning. Otherwise, I probably won't come here that often, anyway. I just enjoy fixing up old black family photos and coloring some of them. And I got the basics down. You know, like cloning, healing, and layering them to death!!
Thanks for understanding - And for forgiving me.

  • "ignore ownership on this volume" not available

I have a large external (Firewire) volume that is in the process of converting to core storage (FileVault) encryption. (I did not want to convert it, but did so by accident). It has been converting for a couple of days, and I have days more until the conversion is finished.
Currently the permissions on the volume (as I said, it is an external volume) are completely whacked out
    * "Ignore ownership on this volume" is NOT available in the Finder Get Info window
    * Permissions for most folders and files are
         You have custom access
         Name             Privledge
         <Fetching>     Read & write
         staff               Read only
         everyone        Read only
That is, it can't seem to figure out who the owner is for most of the files and folders. This means I cannot easily write files on the disk.
Any thoughts other than (1) wait for encryption to finish and see if the problem goes away or (2) restore from back-ups? Restoring takes a couple of days, so I'd rather not do that.

I attempted to uncheck ignore ownership for the same reason you describe for DiskWarrior 4.1. I followed the instructions in the panel "to unckeck ignore ownership for DW v 4.1". But since ignore ownership is not listed under Sharing & Permissions, I failed. Ignore ownership, as far as I can see, is no longer an option under Sharing & Permissions. I recall some one saying this was so, but at the time I did not pay enough attention to the remark.

  • Problem moving Time Machine backup in Mavericks (missing "Ignore ownership on this volume")

In order to move Time Machine backup it is necessary to Make sure "Ignore ownership on this volume" at the bottom of the "Sharing & Permissions:" section is not checked.
However, this option has disappeared from Volume info window after upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.
Any idea how I can find this?
    Thank you.

Once you're in the TM interface you will see a basically normal Finder window (with a lot of weird graphics, hence its other name The Star Wars interface )
On the right of the screen is the timeline allowing you to move backward and forward in time. Once you find what you want you can select the files or folders and restore.
As in the normal Finder multiple selections are allowed. I suggest you play around with it a bit at first and try restoring a file or a few files or folders just to get a feel for it.
    good luck
    regards

  • PS CS4 Scratch Disk Ownership on this Volume Problems

I have a second hard drive selected as a scratch disk for Photoshop CS4 but PS won't start unless a check is put in the box "Ignore ownership on this volume". However that won't stay checked and I keep having to go into "Get Info" and rechecking that box. That check box is not on my main boot drive but it seems to be on every other drive. This wasn't an issue for a long time and then suddenly it started happening recently even though I haven't made any changes to my setup. Any ideas how to make that setting stick??

As long as you understand the security risk there's no other reason for avoiding that option. However, as long as you are the only one writing to these other drives, then there's no need to ignore permissions. You would always have access to your own files.

  • Why does FF save files to desktop, when I have "downloads" checked in options? This is a new issue with the latest version 3.6.3 Windows XP Thanks.

Why does FF save files to desktop, when I have "downloads" checked in options? This is a new issue with the latest version 3.6.3 . Using Windows XP Driving me nuttier! Thanks.
(Is is that MicroNetFrame Asst thing?)
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== When I installed latest version

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your help.
It was just a hunch that MircoNetFrame was causing the problem. I disabled it as you suggested, and I still have the problem.
I just changed under Tools>Options> General - had checked "ask me every time" under downloads, so instead of asking me, FF saved the download to I know not where. It no longer saves it to the desktop, leaving a duplicate in "my documents".
In windows, I have found unless one knows the entire name of the document, one can never find anything. It isn't listed under recent ''''''__. I can't recall the nomenclature, but the
capability is ridiculous. So, I don't know where that file I just downloaded is!
I downloaded a PDF file, but this happens with all DL's. It was so easy to have them all stacked in one place and I could recall
what I had and when I downloaded it easily.
Do you have any other suggestions other that going back to the old version of FF, which I would rather not do?
Thanks again for your time, it is very considerate to help a complete stranger, I must say. Sounds like something I might do! Cheers!

Why I can't see "Ignore Permissions on this volume" option on folder info?
I'm already logged on with the administrator user and the lock is removed

Not every drive supports that option and I have never seen it on a folder.

My Ipod touch plays music but every time I open an app that I have downloaded it closes immediately.  This started happening after updating to the latest version of Ipod software.

Here's a couple things to try:
    1. Reset the iPod by holding the sleep/wake button and home button at the same time for 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
    2. Uninstall and reinstall one of your purchased apps. Sometimes this can rectify the issue.
    3. Connect the iPod to iTunes and restore it. New system software usually resolves the issue. Make sure you sync before restoring because a restore removes the data from your iPod.
Hope one of these works for you!

  • My  itunes account was hacked, someone put up a fake credit card. submitted a request to apple and they have thus far ignored me. is this common?

trying to get some attention from Apple...I called apple and posted a support ticket and after a week don't have any response...don't feel safe that someone can get into my itunes account...is this a problem for anyone else? and has apple responded regarding a hacked account?

I agree, whenever i had any issues with Amazon, their support responded right away. From everything that i've been reading on the various threads related to a hacked account, i notice 2 things...first is that they ignore you until you can "scream" loud enough and get their attention and second is if you get their attention, you are guilty until you can prove your innocence with Apple.
too bad since apple makes great products but their service starting to fall off.

  • Is there a way to have Siri resume an app (i.e. GPS) after you're done with it?

    Hey guys,
Long time lurker, first time posting.  Please forgive me if this has been asked, but I have not found anything related to this question.
I use a GPS app all the time when I am in my car.  I use a bluetooth headset and I love the fact that I don't need to touch/look at the phone to complete certain tasks.
What I do not like is that while I'm using the GPS app, I need to send a text/call/whatever, and I activate Siri.  The screen then changes to the Siri conversation screen.  When I'm done with Siri, the screen stays there and does not switch back to the GPS.  This requires me to look and reach over to press the Home button, and sometimes re-select the GPS app again. This can be very distracting as I drive manual as well.
Is there a command or something I can say to have Siri resume the previously open app?
I have tried "Open previous app", "Resume app", and a bunch of other similar commands.  None worked.  Siri just says that it can't complete that task.
Any help or solution is greatly appreciated!
    Cheers.

I'd also like this to be the norm. Maybe it needs an entry for the SatNav app you use for siri in some config somewhere, as the other apps (phone, etc) are "built in". The siri could know to revert to that app.
