HT202447 Do I re-enable Java plug-in in Safari after Flashback Removal Security update.

I received this update:
Flashback Removal Security update.  After installing the following info came up.
This update removes the most common variants of the Flashback malware. If the Flashback malware is found, a dialog will notify you that malware was removed. In some cases, the update may need to restart your computer in order to completely remove the Flashback malware.
To improve the security of your Mac, this update also disables the Java plug-in in Safari. For instructions on how to re-enable it, please visit:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5241.
My question is:  Do I leave disabled or do I re-enable it?  Not sure what is the right thing to do.

Leave it as disabled unless and until you need Java for a particular web site. Very few use it. Leave Java Script enabled as this is something completely different.

  • Enabling java plug-in 1.4.2_04 in internet explorer 6SP1

    Does anyone know how to enable the java-plugin within ie programatically rather than manually. I have 2000+ machines which already have the JRE installed but I want to enable the plug-in within the browser. I know this can be done during an install but don't want to deploy to these machines again as they are connected to our network via ISDN.
    Any advice would be appreciated

  • Java doesn't work on FFox 17 because Java plug add-on is disabled due to security problems claimed by FFox

    I just deleted old Java updates and installed new Java updates from legit Java site. Same problem persists. When testing java at the java test page, it says it's not there, "missing plug ins". I open Mozilla add-ons and get this: Java (TM) Platform SE 7 U9 10.9.2.5 disabled due to incompatibility/security reasons. Java does not give any other files to download. What am I supposed to do? I'm having problems with my website ATM because of Java & tons of missing java internet problems.
    Please someone answer my question accurately and please solve my problem soon without asking me unrelated questions or questions to which I've already given the answer here (see below). Thank you.

    Thank you Tylerdowner but as you see in my OP: Ive already stated having done all these things! '''I have 2 Java in add-ons which one are you talking about? '''Java Deployment Toolkit 7.0 is enabled and, per my OP, '''Java (TM) Platform SE 7 U9 10.9.2.5 disabled ''by FIREFOX'' due to incompatibility/security reasons.'''
    I'm sorry, are you telling me to enable Java in spite of the security risk and incompatibility with FFOX 17?? Since I see you're a mod, why? Please explain as I'm concerned about the security risks & more important (since I have powerful security) about incompatibility issues. Thanks in advance for clarifying

  • Java not loading with Safari after updates

    Recently, following security updates, Java applets that have
    previously functioned fine do not any more. This is true for
    Safari 2.0.3 (and in fact for Firefox 1.5); however, the applets
    do load and function with Opera 5.
    Looking at the Installed Plug-Ins list in Safari shows
    Java 1.3.1 Plug-in (CFM) — from file “Java Applet Plugin Enabler”.
    Java Switchable Plug-in (Cocoa) — from file “JavaPluginCocoa.bundle”
    Java 1.3.1 Plug-in — from file “Java Applet.plugin”
    What is odd to me is that I have done the Software updates for
    Java 1.4.2 and for Java 5.0. In addition in
    /Applications/Utilities/Java/
    we find, amongst other things,
    /Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/Java Cache Viewer.app:
    /Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/Java Preferences.app:
    /Applications/Utilities/Java/Java 1.3.1 Plugin Settings.app
    /Applications/Utilities/Java/Java 1.4.2 Plugin Settings.applist
    I have run all three settings applications; set them I hope
    correctly; and had no satisfaction. None of the three caches shows
    any content now.
    I have recently removed ~/Library/Caches/Java* anyway.
    I have deleted and reinstalled Safari from the distribution disc.
    I have updated it (and whatever else gets treated at that time) with
    the 10.4.6 Combo Updater. I've installed the Java updates 1.4.2 and
    1.5 (i.e. J2SE 5.0) separately too. Actually I've carried out such steps
    as mentioned more than once.
    All the above to no avail. Java applets just don't load any more. Equally
    annoying is that I have no mental picture of what ought to be
    happening, nor any clue as to where to acquire one.
    Please, could anyone help with the practical aspect of getting the
    applets going again?
    As well, I would much appreciate being pointed to any good
    explanations of what ought to be going on.
    iMac 4,1; Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    Safari 2.0.3; Java 1.3.1; Java 1.4.2; J2SE 5.0

    Indeed I did the installations in a good order, and the applets were in
    no way incompatible with the latest Java. However, as a result
    of the update, or in some way or other that I am unaware of (including
    the possibility that I did it myself, but had forgotten it) I was running
    Safari 2.0.3 under Rosetta. Apparently this is 'well known' to stop the Java
    applet service. I did not know this, and I found the possibility by
    serendipity from a search on the discussion forums for 'Safari and
    Java applet'.
    The message that was key for me was
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1967571&#1967571
    where it was remarked
    "The problem was that I was running Safari under - Rosetta. Turning off Rosetta made the problem go away."
    So ignorant was I of what this meant that I floundered about a bit,
    getting all the advertising hype about how wonderful Rosetta would
    be or was, before I got the tip from my own machine's Help that I could
    turn it off by unchecking a box in the GetInfo dialogue box for a program.
    Indeed I found that 'Open using Rosetta' was checked for Safari. Removing
    the Rosetta requirements means Java applets run again for me.
    I don't see the Java plugins 1.4.2 and 1.5 in the
    'Safari>Help>Installed Plug-Ins'
    window where the 1.3.1 version appeared before. But I do have
    a Java Console window and it mentions 1.4.2, which I selected as
    preferred in complying with the last suggestion offered me.
    I note with interest that the last thing I did before the penny finally
    dropped was to get the latest version of WebKit and try that. Java
    applets do not work there, and Rosetta requirements have never been
    On!
    I suppose I can now turn to getting Firefox working with Java applets.
    It still does not: there is no special indication of this except that the
    area where the applet output should be is left blank.
    SO: If applets don't work, check early that you haven't selected
    'Open using Rosetta' for the program Safari. It might be the easy
    answer to the problem.

    I have a need to enable Java Plug-in 6U20 6.0.200.2 in Firefix 19. This version of Java is disabled by Firefox by default since it has few security issues. But still i need that to be enabled. Do we have a method to do it. I do not want to use %Application Data%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<Random Profile Name>\pluginreg.dat file as this is created under a random profile. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi David, Thanks for the quick reply. But i have already gone through the solution that you provided. My requirement here is to automate this. User machines are already installed with the Java 6 U20 which they need it anyway. When i install Firefox, this Plug in should be enabled to the users. I need to use some script / commands to make this happen.

  • Static variable, a bug in applet classloader, Java plug-in?

    I found a potential bug in java plug-in.
    Environment,
    1. IE 6.0
    2. Windows XP
    3. JRE 1.3.1.06 and JRE 1.4.1.01
    Steps,
    1. build a very simple applet (attached below)
    2. embed the applet into a .html page.
    3. enable java plug-in for IE and Netscape.
    4. launch the .html page in either of the two browsers.
    5. for the 1st time, I can see 'tmp = 0' in the java console window.
    6. keep the browser open, browse to 'www.google.com'
    7. click 'Back' button of the browser.
    8. I notice 'tmp = 1' in the java console window.
    9. if I browse to google.com and back again, it will display 'tmp = 2'. and the number will keep on increasing if I repeat those steps.
    10. But if I press F5 to refresh the page, the log message will go back to 'tmp = 0'. and if I press 'x' inthe console window to clean up the classloader cache, I will get 'tmp = 0'. If I close the browser and open a new one, I will still get 'tmp = 0', which is what the applet should output.
    11. If I click 't' in the console window to list the thread while I am in the 'google' page, I can't see the applet thread, which means the applet should have been destroyed.
    12. No matter I try 'g' to do garbage collect, or 'f' to finalize objects, the problem still happens. the only solution is what I did in the step 10.
    Is it a bug in the classloader or the JRE itself? Why the value of the static variable won't be cleaned up along with the applet?
    ----------- HERE IS THE APPLET --------------------
    import java.applet.Applet;
    public class AA extends Applet
    private static long tmp = 0;
    public void init() {
         System.out.println("tmp value = " + tmp);
    tmp++;
    public void start() {}
    public void stop() {}
    public void destroy() {}

    Static values are stored in the class. Once a class is loaded into a classloader, it cannot be unloaded (the only thing you can do is use another classloader).
    Apparently, the classloader cache allows sharing of classloaders between applet instances. Perhaps F5 (reload) causes the classloader cache to be cleared.
    I don't see any bug. When developing applications or applets that must run in the same JVM, you should program defensively and avoid using static values which can change over time.

  • Why does my Firefox not have a Java plug-in?

    My question is similar to "Java Plug-in for JRE7u21?" but all the suggestions there that worked are for Windows, and I'm on a Mac, and I don't want to hijack that thread. For the record, that thread is [/questions/958847]. aw
    I have Mac OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, Firefox 24.0, which says it's up to date, and Java 7 update 45, also up to date. I only want answers for Mac OS X, not Windows, not Linux.
    The online Java test works OK in Safari but not in Firefox. Firefox thinks Java is not installed. There's no "Java Applet Plug-in" in the plug-ins list.
    Since Safari is OK, I assume there's a bug in Firefox. Can we narrow it down by identifying which combinations of versions (of Mac OS X, Firefox and Java) have the Java plug-in and which don't?

    Security is a bad answer. Safari allows Java to run if the user allows it. Why can't Firefox do the same? If Firefox has security vulnerabilities that Safari doesn't have, how long will it take to fix them?
    What's all this about the Java Deployment Toolkit? I'm talking about the JRE, the Java Runtime Environment. I'm not a developer, I'm not an administrator, I'm a user, and I want to use Firefox. Silly me.
    Sorry for the irritation. I'm expletive deleted tired of people telling me what I can and can't do for my own safety.

  • After Java patch 1.7.0_07 ENable applet plug-in and Web start checkbox is gone!

    Hello all,
    Using ML 10.8.1 and Safair 6.0
    After Java patch 1.7.0_07 ENable applet plug-in and Web start checkbox is gone! The check box to enable Safari to load Java pages is 100% gone, missing, just not there anymore.
    When I go to the Java test page it shows that I have Java 7 loaded. Has anyone else run into this problem or have a solution to enable true load loading in Safari and bring back the Enable applet plug-in and Web Start application check box in ML...
    Thanks

    I found out something very interesting. I noticed that another page would show up for less than have a second before the ML Java Preference would show up. I did a video recording of this and moved frame by frame. I show that the page / pane showing up had the following option:
                    Run applets:  in their own process
                                         within their browser process
    Both boxes for the two are unchecked.
    Then this page would disappear and nother would show up without the option / check box

  • How can I enable java applet plug-in and Web Start applications via terminal?

    Since the last Java update to Snow Leopard, I have found that the system periodically disables the Java applet plug-in after a period of disuse.  I know I can go to /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences and just click to re-enable Java.  But I want to write a script which will do this periodically for a couple hundred Mac users where I work.
    My question is - how can I reenable the Java applet plug-in and web start applications via Terminal command?  Is this possible?  Is there a plist file that can be modified, etc.?
    Bob Reed

    It is my understanding that Apple's most recent Java update automatically disables Java after a certain period of time that it hasn't been used.  We don't want users to have to keep re-enabling it.  So we wanted to find a way to do this via script either run by a Casper JSS server or stored locally on each workstation.   With the guidance provided by Mark Jalbert above and some text from a script written by Rich Trouton, I was able to make a script (with some minor changes) and a launch agent to re-run the script upon login.  So the preference is always enabled.
    For your reference, the script content is:
    #!/bin/sh
    # DYNAMICALLY SET THE UUID FOR THE BYHOST FILE NAMING
    if [[ `ioreg -rd1 -c IOPlatformExpertDevice | grep -i "UUID" | cut -c27-50` == "00000000-0000-1000-8000-" ]]; then

  • Looking for a good Javascript to let me know if the "Enable applet plug-in and Web Start Applications is enabled" is disabled or enabled within Java Preferences?

    If this code could work on Snow Leopard as well, that would be awesome. I have a code to tell if Java is enable or disabled on any web browser, but it does not detect if the Java Preferences "Enable applet plug-in and Web Start Applications is enabled" is enabled or disabled. Just looking for a specific code to tell if this option is disabled or enabled.
    Thank you

    Launch Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences.app by double-clicking.
    EDIT; But I think you are confusing this with JavaScript which has nothing to do with it.
