HT202447 What kind of performance or problems can i expect if I disable Java web plug-in on my macbook?

How will disabling the java web plug-in affect my computer performance?  The flashback trojan horse virus recently infected my laptop.  Apple website suggested disabling the plug-in.  I was wondering if anyone has attempted this and what were the results?  Thanks for any help on the matter.
C.C.

Disabling the plugin will have no effect at all unless you visit one of the few remaining websites with Java content. In that case, you won't be able to access the content until you re-enable the plugin.

  • HT202447 disabling Java web plug in?

The advice is to disable the Java web plug in to counter the current malware outbreak. Can anyone tell me in practical terms what functionality I will lose by doing so. Thanks.

You won't be able to run Java applets embedded in web pages. Very few websites have such content nowadays, so you probably won't be missing much.

I'm told that both disabled Java by default in the latest versions. You are notified when Java is needed with a warning and given a chance to override it. Firefox looks like this

Hey Luis. I not only remember…I still have mine (OS 9)!  Works perfectly well…for some things; just need to be selective about what I ask it to do. (Also have its big brother Pismo running Tiger, which is still an extremely competent machine.) When I take them out of their cases, I'm still amazed at the G3's build quality.

What kind of mathematical optimization problems exits in SAP?
I don't use SAP and don't have any experience with SAP but I would be interested what complex optimization problems, preferably "NP problems", exits or where a fast solution (semi-solution) to such problems would be beneficial.

I think that no exists standard routines about NP problems in SAP.
OK. But this is not what I asked for.

Hence, if you have such an algorithm, where can it be applied in SAP? Where is it useful?
I would especially be interested in problems where the space is so big that can not be completely tested.

  • Can we change the label of Java Web start at the time of downloading applic

can we change the label of Java Web start at the time of downloading application?
At the time of downloading application(jar files) java web start shows "Downloading Application" lable on it window , so can we change it so some other..

The 'splash' screen might be of interest to you.
Here is the quick description from the FAQ.
    <http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/javaws/developersguide/faq.html#206>
Section 3.5 of the JNLP Spec. has more details on using a splash screen for an application.
(But if you mean changing the very first screen seen when downloading an application the first time, the answer is 'no'.)
    Late addendum..
By the way - now I review your question, I note you stress 'while jars are downloading'.
There is another strategy you might take. Mark most of the application jar's as 'lazy' download, get the main GUI on-screen quickly, then use the JNLP API's DownloadService to fetch the rest of the jars, after the application is running.
This has the advantage that, then we can have complete control of whatever is shown on the screen during the bulk of the downloads. We might show ..a 'splash screen', or a dialog with the application name on it, or a progress dialog, ..or any combination of the three.

Well, when you go to a web page a section of the web page will have a coffee cup picture where the java applet will run. The applet loads then runs. If you are not seeing this behavior then you are not using java. If it make you feel more comfortable then disable the browser java plugin. On my machine I have not disable java- but you
    may what to.

  • Generic connectivity to SQL server: what kind of performance can I expect?

I have set up a generic connection to a SQL server 2k db, with Oracle on another win 2k box. Both databases are in their "out of the box" configuration, so no particular tuning has been done: but the generic connectivity shows awful performance. In fact I have tried various kind of queries, and all of them show abysmal performance. A query with an "insert - select" that transferred 80K lines executed for one hour, with an average transfer rate of 1KB per second!
I don't think this is the kind of performance I can expect from this tool, is it? Is there anyway particular I can do in order to tune the dblink over the generic connectivity?

I don't think this is the kind of performance I can
expect from this tool, is it? Is there anyway
particular I can do in order to tune the dblink over
the generic connectivity?Nevermind: apparently there are network communication problems between the two machines. Trying to execute the same tests on two co-located dbs shows performances of about 700ms in order to transfer 70000 3-column lines from a sql server db to oracle with a "insert into ... select * from" query.
