HT202856 4k display on iMac?

If the new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro support 4K resolution over HDMI, then why would an iMac 27" with NVIDIA GTX 780M not support a 4k display?

My 21" display on iMac (mid 2010) is overheating so much I can't sit at my computer for more than an hour or so.  Very hot.  Also, some shadowy shapes appear in the background on the upper left of the screen. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.
Do you have an iPad 3 as well? And is yours not experiencing any issues close to mine?
    Thanks again!

  • MacBook Pro Target Display to iMac - Black Screen

I have a MacBook Pro (13'', Early 2011) & iMac (21.5", Mid 2011) using a Thunderbolt Cable to Target Display. Everything was working find and I could Command F2 to Target Display as expected.
However, about a week about this stopped working. Now when I try to Target Display the iMac goes to a Black screen (like it's switching to Target Display) and the MacBook Pro does nothing. The iMac will be at the Black screen until I Command F2 again (or disconnect the Thunderbolt Cable), then the iMac goes back to the normal display.
I have tried another Thunderbolt cable with no luck. I have perform all software updates on both machines (now both running 10.7.3) and fixed Disk Permissions.
I have also found that restarting my MacBook Pro allows this to function as excepected (Command F2, Blue Flashing Screen, Target Display on the iMac). However, this is not an ideal situation since having to restart my computer is time consuming.
    Any suggestions would be appriciated.

    Hello all -
I've done some additional testing. I tried an completely different iMac (and Thunderbolt cable) this morning and saw the exact same behavior so it is definitly something specific to the MacBook Pro.
Again, a restart resolve the issue, so it appears to be related to after the computer goes into a hard sleep (cover closed), because I can leave for lunch (cover open) and the display will go to sleep and things will still work as expected.
    Any thoughts/ideas woudl be appriciated.

  • Target Display Mode iMac 27 mid 2011 with Mac Mini 2011 bootcamp

    Hello,
I can't seem to use Target Display Mode with Bootcamp.
    My configuration:
    Imac 27" mid 2011 with osx 10.8.4
Mac Mini Server 2011 with osx 10.8.4, bootcamp 5 and Windows7
Both are connected via Apple genuine Thunderbolt cable (2m).
When I boot the Mac Mini into OSX then Target Display Mode works perfectly and I can see the osx installed on the Mac Mini on the iMac display.
However, when I reboot the Mac Mini into Bootcamp (windows7 x64) I can't put the iMac in Targt Display Mode and get to see Windows 7 on my iMac screen.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924#8
The following article says that this should work, however once I reboot osx on the Mac Mini the iMac leaves Target Display Mode immediatly and will not return to Target Display Mode.
Any advice? I contacted Apple Support and a Sr. Enginner said it should be supported and he's checking with a higher tier.
    Thanks

    Yes, it does.

  • Apple Cinema Display to imac 27 help

Hello. I need some help here please.
I have an old 23" Apple HD Cinema Display with a connector and I am trying to use it as a dual monitor on my mid 2010 imac 27".
It looks like I need to go from ADC to Mini DVI. It also appears as though this may have to be done in two steps - ADC to DVI and then DVI to mini DVI.
    Is this right?
    Can this be done?
If so, can someone direct me to a place where this adapter/s are for purchase?
I am tired of this decent display just sitting here gathering dust. Unusable for about 3 years now.
    Thanks for your help.

Yes, it can. Click here for more information.

  • MacBook Pro with Retina display to imac

    Hi
Can i connect a MacBook Pro with Retina display to a mid 2010 imac 27"    ?    in ANY way?     to use as a second screen... HDMI to mini display.. ive a feeling  i know the answer but its worth asking.....
    thanks!

Ha, "their" my teenagers would certainly point that out.
"true to say the imac isn't the most upgrade friendly"
Well it's just taking that front glass and the LCD off. The earlier ones had the hidden latches and the special tool to release it. "Took quite a technique to remove it. I just did one where someone had just broken the latch and glued it back.
"i just replaced the dvd drive, i could never go back to mechanical."
That's for sure. As soon as I put my first SSD in this early 2011 MBP 13" I realized that there was a reason why all the Airs could get buy with just 2 or 4 GB RAM.
    "currently budget isn't an issue"
    That must be nice.
"this is testament to apple - there is no way a pc would have held up this well,"
Yes, I'm still using a 20" and 2 22" ADC Apple Cinema Monitors on my workbench w/ a 2002 Power Mac MDD G4, a 2011 Mini i5 and a 2006 iMac. There's a working SE and IIfx in the closet.
    " initial pain of purchase"
Yup that IIfx originally cost $9,900 in 1990. I got it for half price!
There's a 27" iMac for sale here in the NW. I'm looking at it to replace the Core 2 Duo.
"imac is still a great machine with a georgeous screen"
Yup until last year I administered 88 PCs at a charter school. I found looking at those displays and jittery windows all day long really irritating. Of course I'd try to "2 finger scroll" and use "Gestures" to move to a new desktop until I remembered "Oh right, PC, crap."
Good luck and thanks for the checkmark.

  • Two External Displays for iMac

Is it possible to run two external displays off of an iMac? I have a small display running and just was giving an old second display so I was wondering if I could run both at the same time?

It's a real low-down shame that the HD5750-equipped 27-inch iMac cannot support triple displays.
All of the HD5750 video cards available for Windows PCs support triple displays (two DVI and one DisplayPort) with the Eyefinity technology that was built into the HD5750's GPU.
Having one iMac 27-inch flanked by two additional 2560x1440 monitors would be so SWEET.

  • Cinema Display or iMac

I need a larger screen than the 15.4" of my MacBook Pro. I am torn between a 23" Cinema Display (or even a 30") and an iMac 24" which I would use as a larger display for my MacBook Pro.
    1. Is the 30" Cinema Display overkill for a normal-size desktop running most Pages, Keynote, and the Web? I know I'm too cramped when I must have both Keynote and Art Text open.
    2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a) the Cinema Display and b) the iMac? Is it cost-effective to get the iMac because it can serve as a computer too and not just a monitor? My MacBook Pro will remain my primary computer because I haul it to work every day.
    3. How do I use the iMac as a monitor? A simple ethernet cable between it and the MacBook Pro? What are the details of getting the iMac to work as a monitor for my MacBook Pro?
    THANKS for your opinions.

    3. Download and set up ScreenRecycler.

  • 2nd Display for iMac

hey! i know i can use my imac as a 2nd (mirrored) display and that's cool. I would like to see everything on my TV and I know it has the port for it, but the problem is my mac is like 25 ft from my tv. does anyone know if there's a wireless solution to this? not like apple tv or anything, i want to be able to see everything on my TV, not just media. Sorry, but I couldn't really narrow this down during the search. Thanks!

Just spent 45' on a live chat with Apple support, who answered my question: it can't be done. The MBA is not able to be used as a secondary display as I had intended. The other way around, so using the iMac's display as a secondary one for the MBA does work.
Hope this helps somebody to avoid the mistake I made.

  • 2nd display in iMac-style?

    Hi all,
    i would like to add a 2nd 20" display to my 20" Alu-iMac.
Has anybody seen a display, which is very similar to the iMac-display? The same height
of the stand, aluminium-design and so on, too?
Do the ACD have the same height, so that you could place the without any problems side
by side? I similiar design would be very nice.
    Any suggestions? :o)
    Thanks a lot!

The Apple Cinema Display is probably going to be the closest aesthetically to the iMac though the overall height is not going to match up. The 20" ACD has a total height of 15.9" and the 20" iMac 18.5". You could get a different brand LCD that has a height adjustment but it probably won't match the brushed aluminum look as well. You might just try and find something to sit it on to make up the height difference.

  • Connecting 2 Thunderbolt displays to imac using bootcamp

    Hello all and festive greetings!b
I bought an imac5 retina display yesterday and connected it normally and works perfect with my 2 thunderbolt displays either side.
I now tried to set up bootcamp (for work I can only use bootcamp due to my nature of work) and I can only seem to get one of the thunderbolts to work. The other is working fine, the sound actually comes out of it! But when I press Screen Resolution I can only see the imac and thunderbolt "1" display instead of having an option to add the third monitor.
Usually you have a desktop/laptop and add two monitors but because the imac is a computer that is a monitor too it makes it difficult to get around.
Thanks in advance for all your help
FWIW, I'm using windows 7 pro.

I am specifically interested if the TB monitors are connected to separate TB ports of the iMac or are daisy-chained? These two configurations work very differently.

  • How to connect external display to iMac

which port do I use to connect external display to my iMac ?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Depending on the iMac you have, you have different ports: Mini-DVI, Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt. Mini DisplayPort is available in 2009 and newer iMacs, and Thunderbolt is available in the Mid 2011 and Late 2012 iMac.
You have to use one of those ports to connect an external display. You will probably have to look for an adapter, depending on the port the external screen has got

  • Adding a VGA or DVI Display to iMac

Good morning Apple Community.  I would like to attach a second display to my new iMAC Intels.  The trouble is, I can't find an adapter to go from Thunderbolt to VGA or DVI. Does apple make such an adapter?  I would like to utilize the monitors I currently have vs. purchasing additional Apple displays.  I appreciate any direction you can give me.
    Thanks,
    Eric

The Thunderbolt port works for both Thunderbolt devices as well as DisplayPort connections. So you need a mini-DisplayPort to VGA or DVI adapter, as appropriate. Apple makes both, and there are third-party adapters as well.
