HT202879 Newest version of pages and .doc compatibility

Will the newest version of pages in Mavericks open .doc documents created in Microsoft Office 2004? I was about to update my MacBook to Mavericks, and it says that Mavericks will no longer be compatible with Microsoft Office 2004. So instead, I was just going to buy Pages and open all of my .doc documents using that. Will this work?

In another post, I mentioned that I tested Pages v5.0.1 opening Word documents created from August 1998, but not earlier.
I work in an office space with mixed Macs and Windows machines. The Macs all use Office for Mac 2011. No Pages application is installed.
Tom has good advice.
