HT202879 View or download xlsx file
Looking for a recommendation as to the best method to either view or download xlsx file/s.
Hi John,
I don't know that there is a 'viewer' for Excel files.
Numbers ('09 and the new version 3) will open Excel files (as Numbers files). the degree of fidelity in the translation depends what features used in the Excel version are supported in Numbers.
At least three open source applications, LibreOffice, Apache OpenOffice, and NeoOffice will also open Excel files. Again, the fidlity of the translation depends on the feature match between xOffice and those used in the indivdual MS Excel file.
If you will be editing and returning the files for editing at the other end several times, your best choice is probably Excel itself, available as part of MS Office (Mac).

Barry

When clicking on a link (in Internet Explorer 9) to download an Access MDB file and then choosing to open the file directly in Microsoft Access (2007) instead of saving it, the file is copied to Temporary Internet Files but Microsoft Access tries to open
a different file and displays an (Unrecognized database format) error.
When I click on the option to open the file, the MDB file is copied to Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 but instead of that file, Access tries to open a different (incorrect) file located in Temporary Internet Files\Content.MSO (e.g. in the above error
message, NativeView.do is an XML file containing an error message).
I don't see this problem with Word, Excel or PowerPoint files. When opening a Word file (without saving) the Word file is copied to Content.IE5 but an identical .tmp file is created in Content.MSO which when opened in Microsoft Word displayed the required file
correctly. The same happens for Excel files. PowerPoint appears to be handled a little differently (no .tmp file created in Content.MSO but the required file is still copied to Content.IE5) but the PPT file is still opened correctly in Microsoft PowerPoint.
I think the Content-Type "application/msaccess" is fine because Internet Explorer does launch Microsoft Access. It just tries to open the wrong file (or so I think). However, it looks like the file type is not being determined. Here is what I noticed
when trying to open different Microsoft Office files using Internet Explorer:
The last one is the MDB file. As you can see, only for this type of file, the "Type" (Microsoft Office Access 2007?) is not displayed in this Open/Save dialog box.
On Firefox, I don't see this problem. When I tried clicking on the link to the MDB file in Firefox, Microsoft Access was launched and the file was opened correctly. Is there something I can do so the MDB file is opened properly using IE? I can add/change headers
in the HTTP response that writes this file to the output stream (on disk) if that helps.
Thanks for your time!Sounds like a problem symptom to be discussed in either an IE forum or an Access forum, not here. How did you come to post here? ForumsRedesign. That might be an on-topic issue for this forum. <eg>
Can you find your way to either of those other forums easily from here? Another on-topic question for here I think. ; )

Oops, my bad. Thanks for letting me know! :)

Downloads fail to operate i can't save or view any downloaded media files
I can not save or view any form of media from any website. The 'download window' will initiate and indicate the file is being/has been downloaded but nothing happens ie it does not get saved in the designated folder or the media players all report a failure and won't play. I am able to download all media files in IE7 . I am also having trouble with .rtf files sent via e-mails s not being read by MS office 2010 (may be a separate issue) but other file formats like .doc and .xls files open correctly.
If the files really get downloaded something must be removing them. Perhaps some security programs like anti virus or spy-ware removal tools are in action here?!
If the players reports failure and won't play please take a note of what they report caused the failure.
About the .rtf files sent via e-mail not read by MS Office 2010, can they be opened with some other viewer like Wordpad? -
Cannot view or download PDF files from secure web site with Reader X.
Ran into a similar problem when Reader X first came out (Reader 9 had been working fine). Only a blank window was displayed, but a work around was to "Save As" and use the view option to display and print the document. I recently had to replace my modem. Since then, that work around option is no longer available; it errors out saying that the file could not be downloaded. We are using IE9 and Windows 7. I tried another browser, Google Chrome, with the same negative results. Also, I got the same results on another secure website. I have deleted and downloaded another copy of Reader X (10.1.1) and checked for updates, run the Repair program, and confirmed that Protected Mode and AdobePDF.dll are both enabled. I looked at my Internet settings, too but found nothig that would obviously
interfere with Reader.Usually, this message occurs with Windows. First time I've seen it with OS X. Looking into it.

Every time I get a PDF file sent to me, I only see the first page and I can't even print it out. I guess I should be setting up something as my default to view PDF files but I'm not sure how. Help!!!!! The pdf file in question was 12 pages.
Hi Matthew;
Welcome to the discussions. I will presume that the pdf document opened in Preview. At the top of the Preview window, just beneath the file name is a tool bar. Click on the button that reads "Drawer" and you should see thumbnail representations of the complete document show up on the right side of the main window. You can move up and down through the document simply be using the up and down arrows on your keyboard.
Alternately, you should be able to use the Previous/Next buttons or the Back/Forward buttons in the toolbar to move between pages of your document.
Another alternative would be to download and install the latest version of Adobe Reader available at http://www.adobe.com

I am unable to view or download PDF files using Firefox that used to open automatically.
Reading some of the other comments on the support site I wonder if in my haste in making sure I didn't get that malware virus if I didn't perhaps accidentally delete a necessary plug-in for Adobe Reader? I'd appreciate any advice. Thank you!
If you use extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extension) like <i>Adblock Plus</i> or <i>NoScript</i> or <i>Flash Block</i> that can block content then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See:
* [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]

Hi BalusC,
thanks for your immediate response.
as you correctly pointed out its not XLS but a csv file that works fine.
I just tried my luck for XLS file, but as you said it does not work for XLS file as well. original file contained images which were lost
after the download and garbage characters got inserted in.
I will have a look at the code you have given link of.
but for reading/writing I am using inputstream/outputstream but doing that through reader and writer.
like this
br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(new FileInputStream(
fileName.toString()), charsetName));
and for writing
outputStream = new BufferedWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(
response.getOutputStream(), charsetName));
you mean to say I should not use reader writer?

Everytime I try to download a dmg I just get a black screen and nothing downloads.
Hi aikidojoe,
Sorry to say I have not been able to solve the problem. However, the problem only exists with Safari, as
I also have Google Chrome and Firefox and am able to download dmg files on those.
I also have another problem with Safari that appears to have begun at the same time, I can't view or download
PDF files from websites on Safari, but again I can on Google Chrome and Firefox.
Even stranger (without going into a long list) there are things I can do Safari that I can not do on Google Chrome or Firefox, and other things I can do on Safari and Firefox but not Google Chrome, and still other things I can do on Safari and Google Chrome but not on Firefox. All these things should work on all 3 browsers.
To make a long story a little shorter, with the exception of the problems with dmg and PDF files, overall Safari seems to be faster and handles the majority of things better than Firefox and Google Chrome. So, in order to be fairly functional, when I need to download dmg files or PDF files I use Google Chrome which appears to be better than Firefox in these two areas.
Although I don't know what the actual problem is or what to do about it, I believe the problem is with Safari itself. The current versions of Safari are made for 32 or 64 bit processors (I still use a 32 bit processor) and I think the problem is in this dual programming.
The latest versions of Firefox and Google Chrome are also made for 32 or 64 bit processors and again I think there are dual processing problems manifested in the fact they they won't do certain things right.
I plan to upgrade to a 64 bit computer this month and will try to remember to let you know what happens with the 3 browsers with the new setup.
In the meantime I would appreciate your comments on the above and any ideas you may have.
I hope this helps in some way.
Good Luck!

How do you know when the person that you've shared the file with has downloaded the file?
After the person get the email that says "I am sharing these files with you. Click on the image below to view or download your file.", how do you know that they've viewed or downloaded the file? Do you get an email message or is there something in the shared status that lets you know?
Thank you for your post. Although this is a feature for Buzzword, right now it's not possible to know if someone has viewed a file you've sent via Share. We are working to integrate Share/My Files/Buzzword so that this will be corrected in future.
Let me know if you have additional questions.

Why can't I download .zip or .xlsx files to my iPad from a link on a webpage?
I'm building a website and have one file that is available for people to download in two formats -- .zip and .xlsx. When testing the website in Safari on my iPad, I am unable to download either file. I receive an error message that says "Download Failed. Safari cannot download this file." The downloads work fine on my laptop in all browsers, including Safari. I've only encountered this problem on the iPad.
How can I fix this? I'd like people to be able to download the files even if they are viewing the website on an iPad.
If you need to see the page in action to try it for yourself, please see http://techtamerclients.com/alcohemy/alcohemy-participant-workbook-delivered
Thank you!Something to try.
Get the GoodReader app.
Then in your browser simply type the letter "g" in front of the http and press return.
The file will be downloaded into the GoodReader app.

The earlier post was my first attempt at posting and had some typos. Repeated with typos corrected.
I have a Macbook Pro Retina 13" Late 2013 with preinstalled Mavericks.I now have the 10.9.1 update. Almost from the time of purchase in Nov '13, I have been experiencing freezes and slow & unresponsive trackpad. I have more or less narrowed this symptom as happening when viewing downloaded PDF files. The only option is to force eject, if available or shut down. I spoke to Support as I thought it was a RAM issue and they told me that in Mavericks RAM showing almost full was normal as it uses RAM differently. They took me through some resets and cleaning up which has helped a little but freezing stll happens. This never happened with my Macbook AIr running Lion. Any suggestions?

Macbook Pro Retina 13" Late '13-Mavericks 10.9.1
Macbook Air 13" Mid '11-Lion
Macbook Aluminium 13" Late '08-Snow LeopardSo a PDF file that you can view in Preview on your MBA causes your new MBP to lock up and/or slow down. Is this right? Also you say more or less narrowed down to PDFs with Preview but does the computer exhibit this behavior with other programs and if so under what conditions? And how much free hard drive space do you have?
Viewing memory use in Mavericks is different than with previous versions of the OS. Today it looks like we need to pay attention to what Apple calls Memory Pressure which is gauged by the bar graph in Activity Monitor and to the Virtual Memory being used. When the memory pressure graph bar gets too high it turns red and that's bad news. Looking at how much memory is being used doesn't help - I have a 16GB computer and with almost nothing running it still shows something like 15.79GB used but the memory pressure graph is just a think green line. So unless you see the memory pressure bar turning red lets not worry about memory usage at the moment.
If among the things AppleCare had you do was reinstall Mavericks then I recommend a trip to the Apple store - and take a problem PDF file with you to demonstrate. -

.xlsx files not opening in Quick View on iPad
I am having trouble viewing some .xlsx files in Quick View on an iPad 3. When I attempt to open them, Quick View loads, but I only get a gray screen that displays the file name, file size, and "Open Office XML spreadsheet." I have tried multiple .xlsx files on multiple iPads, and the only ones I can get to open are blank .xlsx spreadsheets I create just for testing. If I add anything to them at all, say a number in a single cell, they no longer open in Quick View. The same files can be saved as .xls files and they open in Quick View, however, asking everyone to save their files in this format is not an acceptable solution for me. The files are being created in Excel in Office 2010.
I am not interested in editing these files on my iPad in any way, I just want to open them in Quick View. Any help is much appreciated, thanks!From the post above, I came to understand that there is a difference between Photoshop Elements 11 and PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe. I mistakenly chose a shortcut - not an Application file.
When in "Open with" -> Choose default program.. -> Browse... ---->
Browse... - on my computer put me in C:/Program Files.
This is not where to look.
Unknownst to me at the time one must back out of this and go to C:/Program Files (x86) -> Adobe -> Photoshop Elements 11 -> PhotoshopElementsEditor
DON'T make the mistake I made by choosing "Adobe Photoshop Elements 11" - which is a shortcut.
Below this is "PhotoshopElementsEditor" which is an Application file - which is the one to choose.
I ended getting rid of the inoperable "Adobe Photoshop Elements 11" in the "Open with..." menu by following the instructions in this link:
http://oakroadsystems.com/tech/7tip.htm#FileBloatedOpenWith
and all seems to operate as required.
I hope that this may be helpful to others.

Message was edited by: Matthew Billingham - adjusted wording...If you want to download your ALV to an .XLXS format file, with all the formatting intact, please try the following code. I have tried to create a custom Function module Z_EXCEL_DOWNLOAD_TEST wherein I pass all the callback variables, the final ALV internal table and all the ALV details like field catalog, sort, layout, event list and so on, along with the concatenated file path and file name in I_FILE. I have used a custom class ZCL_SALVEXPORT_XML which is a copy of the standard class CL_SALV_EXPORT_XML_DIALOG, with few modifications in Method: EXECUTE and Method: DOWNLOAD. The methods where I have modified the code are also shown at the end.

How to download internal table data to .xlsx file ?
Hello All,
I am using SAP ECC 6.0. I need to download internal table data to .xlsx file.
I tried GUI_DOWNLOAD, all the data are getting transferred to the .xlsx file, but while opening I am getting the below error.
Excel cannot open the file "download.xlsx" because file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.
Though Microsoft office 2007 is installed in my system.
Please help <removed by moderator>.
