HT203164 How do I fix a problem when downloading cd into iTunes, "the file name is invalid or too long"? I have never had this problem before until recently.
The message "the file name is invalid or too long" pops up when I try to download a cd onto iTunes. I never had this problem before but lately it has been happening. What can I do to fix this?

Delete and recreate your email settings.
Alternatively, use Apple's Mail for the job. It has Templates too - and more of them.

Yes, I just get that message. I don't see how I could investigate this problem.
I didn't mention that this happened when I was consolidating my library, not copying files to another computer.
In other words, I'm using a "normal" itunes procedure, itunes won't complete it, and won't tell me exactly why or how to figure out how to fix it...
Is there at least some easy way to tell which files were successfully copied to my itunes music folder so I can work on moving the uncopied files?

You can select a group of tracks and consolidate from the right-click context menu. You coud try consolidating in batches, say all songs by artists beginning with A, then B, etc, then the other media types, until you can isolate a problem track and then try moving that by hand and fixing the broken link.
I also have two scripts that could help you, Unconsolidated and ConsolidateByMoving. The first can make a playlist of all unconsolidated tracks, the second can consolidate a selection of tracks by moving them instead of copying.

HT1751 Consolidating files failed. The file name was invalid or too long. How to trouble shoot this?
I am trying to move my iTunes library from old XP PC to Windows 7 PC, using an external hard drive. Using tutorial and signed in as administrator. Trying to consolidate my library and receive error message " Copying files fail. The file name was invalid or too long". Don't know what to do as next step. The library is sitting on the hard drive under the Administrator ID (My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music).

ter using Windows XPGo to the songs view sorted as Album by Artist. Select, for example, the songs of artists whose names begin A-E. Right-click and click consolidate files. Assuming this group consolidate without error move on to another group, say F-J. If there is an error divide the original group into smaller chunks until you can isolate which tracks are causing a problem.

I am trying to use imovie and i have never had this problem before. All of my videos are completly grey and when you try and play them all i get is a black screen but i still hear audio. Can you please help and tell me what i need to do. Thank you
Make sure all of the videos used in the project that is having that problem are from the same event. If they are from multiple events, move them all into one event.

It won't let me drag an effect from the browser all of a sudden. I have always been able to do before. I am using effects from favorites bin and when I try to drag it to the timeline, it won't move. I have never had this problem before. Please help.
P.S. I have tried other effects including transitions and it still won't let me drag.Wow that was really quick, thank you so much. Im not sure at all which version it was because i said it was around 4 years ago he bought it. I know it isn't under his username, since he's a PC person (ugh) so i know its probably registered to one of our actual names. isn't there some way to look it up since we did register it, because I'm not even sure where the disks are from when we bought it (we've moved a lot and also have two storage lockers, i know i would have kept it with other disks) but my cd rom drive is actually broken on my computer as well ( i think it got stepped on and is now squished and won't eject or run disks.)
So is there anyway they can look up that its registered to one of our names since we did register it when we bought and installed it, or do i really have to find the disk with some sort of proof of purchase (i know there would be no receipt after all this time)

I am trying to pay my bill online. However, when I click the "submit" key, it tells me my "nickname" is incorrect. What the heck is a nickname? I have never had this trouble before.
Had the same problem. Here's how I sorted it out, not including yelling at my PC or ranting in my own thread (that's optional): First you want to delete your saved payment option. If you try this and it does not delete, log out and back in. It should be gone. Now re-enter your payment option (credit card number or whatever you are using) and if it asks if you want to save the data for future use, make sure you give it a nickname that doesn't include any special characters. Hope this works for you!

i am trying to move my songs to an external hard drive. after it copies for awhile it will pop up a screen that says....the file name was invalid or to long.....anyone else had this problem?
What are you copying with? See this backup tip for a suggested method. If SyncToy can't copy a file it will carry on with the others and display a failure report at the end. Ideally you'll be copying the iTunes folder to the root of your external drive.

First of all, look on the iPod to see if the song is actually on there. (The last Sync of my Classic resulted in "song not copied... because it cannot be found." The song had previously been on the iPod. I checked and despite the fact that iTunes could not find the file, the song was still on my iPod. I checked the folder and the song was exactly where t was supposed to be. So I simply set iTunes to find it again. What happened? I don't know, iTunes simply threw a wobbly!)
Second, try another Sync. Does this change anything? If the song was on the iPod, does a second Sync remove the message? If the song was not on the iPod after the first Sync, does the second one put it on there?

I have downloaded and deleted an album 3 times now because on the playback, every 30-60 secs. it jumps to another song on the album. I have never had this problem before. Thanks !
Try deleting and redownloading again, this time with simultaneous downloads disabled.
While downloading select Downloads in the left-hand column and make sure Allow Simultaneous Downloads is unchecked. -

I have had my Macbook for 18 months and have never experienced this problem with strange windows suddenly opening in Safari. I know this happens on windows 8 computers a lot, and it has never happened on my Macbook before.
Please can someone tell me how to get rid of these. I have reset my Safari and rebooted my computer, and don't know what else to do. This is very frustrating, as I cannot just do what I need to do.

I would like to get a help... I can not install the iTunes to my new (64bit) laptop... Why??? The installation stops somewhere after a few minute, looks like trying to install but can not go through until the end. I had my old (32bit) laptop and i have never had any problem with the installations... My new laptop is Asus (64bit), and the operating system just upgraded from Win8 to Win8.1....

Start with the first article and clear out any files in the Temp folder. You may need to remove iTunes and its related software and finally make sure that you have the 64-bit version of iTunes downloaded to install.
