Go to the iTunes Store, log into your account, and click the Purchases link under the Quick Links. From there you should be able to re-download some or all of your purchased content. Note that not all content has been licensed for re-downloading in all countries at this time. You can see what content you can download here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5085
You can also re-download content using an iOS device.
For full instructions, see:

Or you can just copy the iTunes library from your old computer to your new one, if you still have the old computer and it's in working order.
Regards.

Well thats upto you but before any major update a backup is recommended, you should also be backing up your system as a matter of good housekeeping.
Time machine makes this very easy, you will require an external disk at least twice the size * of your hard drive in you Mac. Connect it to you Mac with USB, Firewire or Thunderbolt, whatever you wish. You can use Time Machine to take a backup of the hard drive.
If you are unfortunate and have a hard drive fail you can recover all your data very easily.
Apple also sell a product called Time Capsule http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/ but I just use an External Disk.
*** Twice the size may be a bit excessive, it depends on how full your hard drive is and how much you expect it to fill.***

Get info then check permissions then add your curent user name (it was probably different on old Mac) and give your username full read/write permissions.

  • I want to use iMovie 6 on my new MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.5. It won't download. Can I download Snow Leopard instead and use iMovie 6 with that older OS?

I have a MacBook Pro I recently purchased 'cause my old G4 just couldn't output my video films properly. My new MacBook Pro is running 10.7.5 OS Lion. Don't like iMovie 11 and want to use iMovie 6. It won't download on Lion. Could I download Snow Leopard (deleting OS 10.7.5) and use iMovie 6 then? I saw a previous thread that said that could be done.

AppleMan...I have the same iMac you have...i-7 16GB with a SSD....just bought it second hand and it is about 1.5 years old....it was maxed out with upgrades when the original owner bought it.  It was also restored back to factory settings prior to me taking possession.
I am making home movies in iMovie 11....max length 30 minutes or less.  I am totally new to this editing.  I am using HD footgage filmed from my Hero GoPro 3.  I am finding that the movies that I am creating are skipping, staggering, hanging up etc...usually where I had transitions.  I am certain I have enough power and memory in my iMac, so what's the issue?  I read one of your other posts about optimizing each event or clip to 1080p?  Is this what I need to do for every clip I import?  Can I do this for all the clips at once on import?  I also read that I may need to export the movie to quick time for smooth playback??
Any help you can provide would be appreciated!
    Sincerely,
    Matt
PS=How do I e mail you directly here in the posts?  I went to your profile but didn't see any "e mail" or "contact" member button to click on.

  • HT3275 I recently used my time capsule to restore my old macbook onto my new macbook pro.  Is there a way to undo this?

I recieved a new MacBook Pro for Christmas, and my Fiance purchased the new Microsoft office along with a few other things.  This morning, I did a time capsule restore to get my documents and photos from my old Macbook, but I apparently did a full restore instead and ended up losing everything that was loaded onto my new computer in the process.  Is there any way to undo a time capsule restore?

Did you do a backup of the new MBP before you restored? If not there is really no way to go backwards.. although you might find your old setup is still there.. create a new user, with full admin rights.. and then log out and log back in again.. if the new software has disappeared then the restore has completely overwritten the existing files.. you will need to start over.. fresh clean install of the OS and start again.
Read carefully on how to migrate settings and data here.

It does not cover Mavericks but Mountain Lion is similar enough. Sadly the guy who wrote all these excellent guides died earlier this year.

  • I recently bought the newest macbook pro with only 120 GB of disk space I need to upgrade and was wondering if this would work with my computer 500GB New Sata 2.5" hard drive?

I bought the newest macbook pro 13" with only 120 GB of space. I quickly used all of the space up and need a lot more. I was wondering if this disk is compatible with the model i have.
500GB New Sata 2.5" hard drive

Your best practical option is buying a 1TB external HD for $65
The "low" capacity of the SSD on the Air and entry level Retina are meant to be working platforms for these computers.
Meaning ALL your programs and your working data (stuff you use at least every week).
To try to use either the Air or  Retina as a storage platform of any king (lots of pics, music, movies etc.) is both not indicated or practical.
external storage, quality too, is absurdly cheap right now.
    You asked:
These are very expensive theres no way that an hdd drive would be compatible with my Mac?
    yes, a superslim external HD.
    see this: only 7mm thick

Or better still this HUGE HD, which is very small, very reliable and very cheap:
    2 Terabytes, 2.5" and only $119

  • Why didnt my recently bought open box macbook pro come with ilife?

I bought an open box macbook pro, and for some wierd reason it didnt come with ilife...can someone help me out? Thanks in advance.

I would take it back to Best Buy - 'open box' or not, the machine should have come with the iLife applications. They likley just reinstalled to OS, which does not install the iLife applications. Return it and tell them that you need iLife - it's up to the reseller to prepare the machine correctly for resale.

I recently bought a student macbook office program, but I never got a product key?

Where dis you buy it? Contact them and ask for the key. Was it a download? If so they likely emailed you the key. Was it a packaged disk? If so the key is likely on the packaging.

  • HT203167 Hello I've recently just bought a new iPhone and i am wanting to transfer all my music that i habe bought from my old one onto the new one. I've gone onto iTunes and tried to download them all again but it wont let me?

I've recently just bought a new iPhone and i am wanting to transfer all my music that i habe bought from my old one onto the new one. I've gone onto iTunes and tried to download them all again but it wont let me?

What happens when you try to redownload them ? What you can re-download (the types of content that you can redownload varies by country) will show under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes, and the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app on your iPhone (and similarly for apps in the App Store app). If you still have your old phone then you should be able to copy your iTunes downloads from it over to your computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases

  • I recently updated my MacBook Pro to the new software, and now my iMessage and my FaceTime are not connected with my computer. How do I get them to match so that I would be able to use my cellphone number?

I recently updated my MacBook Pro to the new software, and now my iMessage and my FaceTime are not connected with my phone number like it is supposed to be. How do I get them to match so that I would be able to use my cellphone number on my notebook?

To reset any OS X program just go to the folder and trash the affected files.
    Open a new Finder Window
Click "Go" in the above status bar
Click and HOLD the "option/alt" key and you will see "Library" now show in the above list
Click Library while still holding the option/alt key and a new window will open with all of your system files
Go to the preference file (NOT Preference Panes)
    Locate a file named <com.apple.FaceTime.bag.plist>
    Locate another file named <com.apple.FaceTime.plist>
    Locate the file <com.apple.iMessage.bag.plist>
Drag the files to the trash
    Delete the trash
Close FaceTime and iMessage if not already closed
Relaunch FaceTime and iMessage from Applications folder
This should reset the program back to default. You will have to put your information back into the program but it should work.
    Good Luck.

There's some third party applications available. The following article is pretty old (2008) so it would be best to reality-check the capabilities and availability of the various listed items prior to opting for a particular product:

  • Recently bought a used macbook. my problem is that i can't retrieve the original apple ID/password so that i can use my own ?

bought a used macbook pro. When i click the top right corner where "user" would be displayed, once i click on it it requires a password to login "windows".
problem is, i don't know the password or apple ID

If you have downloaded any older Mac OS X version 10.7 or later to another Mac, you can re-download from Recovery. You may have to enter YOUR Apple-ID.
If you have never downloaded an older version before, go the the Mac App Store, log in with YOUR Apple_ID, and BUY a copy of Mavericks or Yosemite. It is on sale for $0. Download it and Install it over what is on that Mac.

  • When I synch my iPod w. new MacBook Pro, laptop doesn't show which podcasts I've already listened to on the iPod.  (My old MacBook did do that.)

I used to download new podcasts to my old MacBook, plug in my iPod, click the Synch button, and not only did the new podcasts get copied from the laptop to the iPod, but iTunes on my laptop would show which podcasts I'd already listened to, so it was easy to delete the old stuff, synch again, and the old podcasts would be gone from both the laptop and the iPod.
When I try to do the same thing with my new MacBook Pro (which I set up using  the Migration Assistant to copy apps, including iTunes, from my old laptop), that doesn't happen:  When I download a new podcast, plug in my iPod, and hit Synch, the new podcast isn't copied, nor does iTunes show which podcasts I've listened to since the iPod was plugged in the last time.
What used to be quick and easy is now cumberson and, because it's hard to remember which podcasts I've listed to and which I havened, error-prone!
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The installer DMG will be in the Applications folder
I haven't tested this, but it seems somewhat at odds with this recent MacWorld article, which gives a method for "capturing" the Lion installer downloaded via the Recovery HD, and then creating a bootable installer volume from it.
Create a bootable Lion install drive for newer Macs
The article is meant for Macs that came pre-installed with Lion and therefore can't use the App store. The article describes a procedure to retrieve the Lion download not from /Applications but from a folder named "Mac OS X Install Data" which gets created at the root of the drive where Lion is to be installed. It's tricky, because normally that installer self-launches immediately after the download, and then deletes itself afterwards.
They distinguish this procedure from an earlier, simpler one that can be used if Lion gets downloaded via the App store - they reference an earlier article for that situation, which does involve retrieving the installer from /Applications. That method has been publicized in many places.
The inference for me was  that the Recovery HD does not download anything to /Applications - otherwise the earlier procedure would work, and this new article would be unnecessary.  As I said, thoiugh, I haven't tested anything.
