HT203167 most of my music has the exclamation point and won't allow me to place songs in a playlist on a new ipod...why?                                     ?

Most of the songs in my iTunes library has been tagged with the exclamation point and will not allow me to place those songs on a new Nano iPod I bought...why?  This is music I have purchased in the past.

See here: iTunes displays a -69 error when syncing iPod
You can use the disk diagnostic tool built into the iPod's firmware to test the health of it's Hard Drive.  See this post from another forum member turingtest2 on how to do this as well as what the resulting numbers mean.

  • Ever Since iCloud and HOmesharing, my playlists are completely empty and also most of my music has an exclamation point next it and when I click "get Info" and "find", it says it can't be found...

...I am really upset.  I waited a long time before calling tech support b/c I knew it was going to be a nightmare.  I'm 2 hours into a call with no resolution....
MOST OF MY MUSIC FILES HAVE AN EXCLAMATION POINT NEXT TO THEM. Many were from 100s of cds I've burned over the years (ever since the first iPod came out), and the rest were iTunes purchases. I can't tell which is which at this point but in my iPhone, on our iPods, on my iPad2, and my iMac....all of my playlists are empty.  I distraught....It's years of building.  Please someone, help me!

Ok, I had a glitch, forced to restart, and lost my train of thought.
Reinstalling iTunes should fix the major issue that might have gone wrong, perhaps your explaination points will disappear and everything will be peachy again.
But if they don't, you can open the XML file in iTunes Folder using a Text edit program to see what the common pathname is to the iTunes Music folder or where your content is located.
If you moved the itunes folder, it needs to go back.
I can't  download iTunes to my Vista virtual machine to test it out right now because iTunes is down, so I can't verify the pathname, perhaps your issue and the iTunes being down are related somehow?
You don't want to import all your music again, but it's a option, but you lose all your playlists, that's what I'm trying to recover.
If oyu don't have a whole lot of playlists, then simply select all the explaimation point music and delete, select File from the menu and import your itunes folder again.

  • My ipod classic got knocked off it's dock by my cat and now no matter what I do, even try to charge it I only get sad face with the exclamation point and it clicks like a clock...Is it hopeless?

Yes, it's likely that the iPod's hard drive is damaged and is in need of replacement.

  • ITunes. Entire music list has the exclamation marks and I can't open music because it cannot be located. I'm 67yr old and need advice please.

I'm 67 yrs old and asking for advice please.
I'm unable now to play the music in my iTunes playlists. 90% of the tunes have exclamation marks now and I can't 'locate' the music. How can I locate the music or remove the exclamation marks on my iTunes music list?

Typical reasons for missing files are, you've deleted the files, they are on a disconnected external drive, or the drive has a changed drive letter, you've moved the folder where the files live in some other fashion, a third party app has rearranged the files, or iTunes has got confused about the layout they are supposed to be in.
Generally you need to work out what has happened, reverse the action and everything will be alright again. If it is something you can't/don't want to undo, e.g. a drive letter change, then as long as you can track down the current location of the folder containing the media then my script FindTracks should be able to reconnect it to iTunes.

  • I changed my Apple ID last night but the iPad still has the old one and won't take the new password either.

How the heck do I get my iPad to take the new Id?  I can't dowload anything or update anything.  I thought when I changed it and my password last night that the iPad would be set up with the new info.

No, it does not change automatically. For starters, go to Settings> iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Sign out of the old ID and sign in with the changed ID. That will allow you to start downloading content and updating apps again.
You need to change the ID for all Apple Services that you use. Read this for more.

  • Apps won't sync from iTouch to computer.  iTunes recognizes the iTouch and the app content, but the content is grayed out on the computer screen and won't allow me to sync.  My iTouch is version 4.2.1 with 6.8GB  capacity.

I am on vacation and away from my home computer.  I installed iTunes on a computer I'm using at my son's house to enable
me to sync my iTouch, since it has become unstable when I am playing games and continually closes and reverts to the home
    screen.
My son's computer recognizes my iTouch and my apps appear on the screen but they are all grayed out and will not allow me
to sync.  Can anyone help me please?

Your iPod can only be synced with one iTunes library at a time. If you try to add content to it from another computer it will erase the contents of your iPod and replacement it with the contents of the new library.
In regards to the unstableness, have you tried a hard reset to see if that makes a difference?  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • Is it possible to sync my ipad music with iTunes on my Mac BookPro to load most of my music taking the 128KB option and then turn on iTumes Matck on my iPad.  way the transfer of my music to my iPad is quicker and I will have the option to download

Doing this will be quicker and still enable me to download additional music from iTunes Match.
Has anyone done this or am I trying to do something that is not possible.

    Yes, it is possible.

  • My MacBook Pro's airport has an exclamation point and will not connect to the wifi. How do I fix this?

I have tried restarting my computer, turning on and off the wifi, entering my IP address manually, etc. Nothing is working and I have had this problem for a week now. I know the Internet is not the problem because it works for others in my home.

    Open System Preferences/Network
Select the Location you use at home
You may need to click the Padlock bottom left at this point if it's locked, enter the admin password to unlock
In the left hand column drag the Ethernet connection to the top of the list and remove any you don't use
Click the Advanced button bottom right
    Click the TCP/IP Tab
Set Configure IPv4 to Using DHCP
Click OK bottom right and you should see the Router IP number appear and a unique but similar one for your Mac
Click Ok then click Apply and close the Panel

  • I continually receive the "iTunes has stopped working" notification and won't allow me to log on.  Why is that?  I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes repeatedly to no avail.

Why do I continually get the "iTunes is not working properly" notice???  I cannot get to the iTunes store.  I am using Windows 8 and have tried downloading it and redownloading it numerous times..

Yeah... that's how it works.  Signing into iTunes does not magically make a library appear.
If you have an iTunes library (media purchased from iTunes) then YOU need to put it on the computer.
Also, since the computer is no longer authorized for his account, any media associated with his account will not be playable.

  • Why do I receive the exclamation point when I just change the album name? File goes missing?

I keep all of my itunes media on an attached network hard drive.  Had no problems for months but over the past 45 days I've noticed that material has started to go missing that I know I did not delete.  I have found no malware on my system.
I read a script to tell me all the files that had an exclamation point.  There were some TV shows (an entire season gone missing) and some CDs.
I just did a test and imported a CD.  I then clicked "get info" and changed the name of the album.  Immediately I received the exclamation point and when I tried to find the original file it is gone.  I have no idea where the file has gone to.  I've tried searching, looking around to find it, and I can't.
Why is itunes having this behavior?  How is the file being deleted?  Any other thoughts or ideas of what I should do to stop this?
I've also sent a support request to the hard drive mfg (lacie) but I'm not sure I'll get much help there.
    Thanks.

More info:  I just ran the same test two ways.  One, I had some files on my desktop, run a script to move these files to the "automatically add to itunes" folder, the files move just fine to my external hard drive and to itunes.  The file plays just fine and the "get info" tab shows it is playing the file from the external hard drive where the file was moved to (not copied).  But, as soon as I change the artist name or the album, the file goes missing and I get the exclamation point.
I ran the same test by putting the files on my desktop, but instead of moving the file to the "automatically add to itunes folder" I just double clicked the file to play it.  I let itunes add a copy and organize my folders.  This time, the file would have been copied (not physically moved) and I see itunes is playing the new copied version.  This time, when I try to change the artist name or album, I have no problems.
I've never encountered this before.  Any info?  Thanks.

    Hello Evie52,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:

    Still can't find your media?
If the missing media is on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod (and you purchased the media from the iTunes Store), you can transfer the media back to your computer using iTunes.
If the missing media is on another computer, you can transfer your iTunes media between authorized computers on your local network using the Home Sharing feature in iTunes.
If the missing media is an app, song, album, music video, or book, you may be able to download it again free of charge.
If you still can't find your missing media, you may need to restore from a backup, if possible.
Learn how to restore from a backup on an external hard drive. Use these steps only if you backed up to an external drive.
Learn how to restore from a time machine backup.
If a backup isn't available, your media may be lost and you may need to purchase replacements.
    Best of luck,

  • My husband(less technologically inclined than I am), decided to delete programs from our iMac, now it has a grey screen and won't get past it. If I insert the Application Install DVD, to repair the disk, will I loose all my pictures and music?

My husband(less technologically inclined than I am), decided to delete programs from our iMac, he turned it off and now it has a grey screen and won't get past it. It won't start in safe mode and when I  If I insert the Application Install DVD, to repair the disk, will I loose all my pictures and music?

With a corrupt disk, the install procedure is most likely going to fail.
    How old it the disk?
You might be able to reformat it to fix the problem. Of course that means you lose all of your data.
The other alternative is to get a new disk drive and put that in your Mac and install OS X
Then put the old disk drive in an enclosure and see what can be recovered from it.

  • HT1199 My iTunes music list all have the exclamation point.  I do not know how to find the files to restore the music.  Any advice?

All the songs in my iTunes have the exclamation point.  I do not know how to find location of the music...any suggestions?

Ok, your music could be in one of a coupel formats, MP3 or, more likely, Apples AAC format, which has a m4a prefix.  Open Finder.  Hold Command and press F, this will open a search window in the top of Finder.  Type mp3 here, let it search.  If it finds your music files, double tap on one and "open Enclosing Folder"  That should show you where they are at.  If nothing is found, try searching m4a instead.  One of the two should show you where your music is.

  • My iTunes Library is giving me duplicate songs. One has an exclamation point in the cloud and the other has the arrow in the cloud for download. Some songs don't have anything which means they play fine. It's burned CD's and purchases from Itunes.

All CD's that I burned for my library have an iCloud icon with an explanation point next to the song. If I right click it prompts me that 'This Item was not added to the iCloud because an error occurred. Some of my purchases have no cloud icon next to them at all and they play fine. Numerous purchases have 2 of the same songs listed..one has the cloud with the explanation point and the other has the cloud with a down arrow for downloading from the cloud. What I am having to do is delete the ones with the explanation point and then download the one with the arrow. It's taking forever. Then I still have to go back and re-burn my CD's and then back them up in iTunes Match. Any ideas of what's going on? and how to get this all done faster? Getting really frustrated!
    Thanks

i noticed this as a bug in iTunes. make sure the correct file is selected in the preferences menus. It does not have to be the default location directiory as Vazandrew stated. your iTunes music library can be anywhere you want it. i have mine on an external cuz i'm a dj and have over 80,000 songs.
once you select/verify the location of your music library, simply drag the folder into the left panel in iTunes from a finder window. iTunes does not automatically add the items like it use to for some reason.
