HT203167 My laptop crashed. How do I recover movies that I purchased on another computer.

My laptop no longer works and I had purchased movies from iTunes which were downloaded on it. How can I recover these movies on another computer?

You copy them from the old computer or the backup of the old computer to the new computer.

  • HT1727 How do I copy books I have purchased to another computer

My Wife and I have seperate iTunes accounts. We both have a Windows computer each running Vista. How can we transfer books which either of us has purchased from the bookstore to the each other so that we can both read them on our iPads (we have one each) without having to buy two copies of each book - which is silly?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can't transfer content purchased under one account to another. It isn't really silly, if that were allowed the whole world could read that book and only one copy would need to be purchased.

my old laptop crashed how do i get my library on my new laptop?

An external bay is something like this: External 2.5 SATA to USB Hard Drive Caddy Case
A small Philips driver is usually all you need to access the hard drive in the leptop. You (or a technically adept friend) remove the drive from the old laptop, put it in the bay, hook it up to your new computer and read what can be recovered from it. Your iTunes library would typically be in X:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes where X: is the letter assigned to the drive.
There's a chance the drive won't work at all, but often it will work for reading data even when you can no longer get it to run your operating system. Seems like a small investment to potentially recover all your lost data, not just iTunes.
If the drive won't work, then the link I posted earlier explains how you can recover all the media and data from your existing device into a new iTunes library. Once you dont this you can restore the backup of the old device to the new one.

  • Hard drive crashed - how do I recover my library????

My hard drive on my laptop recently crashed & that's where we had my itunes library. We were able to recover the library from the corrupt hard drive. But now that library sits on another computer (the one we used to recover the data). Now that I have installed my new hard drive on my laptop and have re-installed the ipod and itunes software, how do I get my itunes library back on this laptop to where itunes will recognize that library?
    Thanks for any help!

Hopefully, when you recovered the HD data, you not only captured all the Artist/Album sub-folders, but the 'iTunes Library.itl' database file (located within the 'iTunes' folder). See: What are the iTunes Library files?
If so, then your task is quite easy. Just copy the total 'iTunes' folder & sub-folders back to where they were before the crash.
After you re-instal iTunes, there should be an 'iTunes' folder in the 'My Music' folder under 'My Documents. It should have two small files: the ITL and XML files. These can be overwritten with the full ITL/XML files you have on the backup.
Close iTunes, copy the music folders over, replace the newer ITL file with the complete one, open iTunes. Your Library should be complete and a replica of the one before the crash.
If you do not have the previous 'iTunes Library.itl' file available, then the best you can do is:
File==>Add Folder==>Browse to the main music folder where your files are and add them into the Library.
Post back with any questions, or if the process I outlined does not match what you see.
    Edit:
After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation.
You need at least three sets of your music:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and the computer is not considered having any backup. If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer, then create and maintain two external sets.
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl).
Here is a post on developing a thorough backup strategy: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=394618&messageID=1263275

  • Following repeated crashing of Firefox 3.6.11, I was required to amend my profiles to correct a security error (I got an ssl error) by deleting cert8.db file. I have lost all my browsing history in the crash, how can I recover it?

The problem originated from Talktalk's Assist & Go software interfering with my browser settings. This caused Firefox to repeatedly crash with message (see below)I then got error "ssl_error_ssl_disabled" when trying to access my webmail- I followed the help instructions and deleted the cert8.db file whcih allowed Firefox to start & me to access my webmail.
But all the browsing history has disappeared, I had about 6 months prior to the crash, how can I recover it, is there a backup?

    No... do not move programs.
    About the iTunes library files
Your iTunes library files track the media you add to iTunes, how you've organized it, and other information such as playlists. By default, these two files are in your iTunes folder:
    Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music/iTunes/
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
    Windows Vista: C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\
    Windows 7: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\
    Windows 8: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\

If your backup copy of your computer was not stolen, then use it to put everything back.
Otherwise, authorize your computer for your itunes account, connect iphone, do not sync, Click:  File>Transfer Purchases
This will transfer itunes purchases from the iphone to the computer.
Enter at least one unique contact and calendar entry on the new computer.  When you first sync, then you should get the option to merge the data.

  • How I can recover my user admin password of my computer?

How I can recover my user admin password of my computer?
I have an I mac 27 Inch 2009 3.06 GHz Intel core 2 Duo. I cant remember my user admin password to enter my computer to make changes, how can I recover it? I have being entering as a guest user.

You can't recover the password, but you can reset it.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password. In OS X 10.10 and later, this option also works with FileVault, but only if you enabled it when you activated FileVault. It's not retroactive. Otherwise, see below.
Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities window appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar at the top of the screen—not from any of the items in the OS X Utilities window.
In the window that opens, type this:
    resetp
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected. You won't be able to do this if FileVault is active.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but the Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as the login password), there's no way to recover it.

I recently restored my iPad and had a film on it, now when I go to sync the film cannot be found. how do i recover the film without purchasing it again?

You can't recover it withou buying it again. You should be backing up purchased films in iTunes on your computer. iCloud does not work with purchased films. Apple does not have the rights from the movie studios to allow for them to let you download it again for free.
