HT203171 Macbook pro trackpad not responsive, opening apps on it's own, moving screens on its own, help!

Hi, I've been having a few issues with the trackpad, mostly with clicks lately. Today the cursor went rogue and started opening all sorts of programs and files, moving to different screens and opening things there, generally going crazy and not responding when I tried to use it. I rebooted several times before it decided to stop on its own -- I'm not sure the reboot had anything to do with it. I took a video of it with my ipod, but it's too big to upload here. Any suggestions before I open cocktail and and run repairs? Thanks for any help you can offer.

My Macbook Pro started to experience the very same erratic behaviour. At first I noticed that it would happen if the MBP was on a flat tabletop surface. If I placed the MBP on my lap, the magic pad seemed to operate properly. It was very consistent. Since this is a capacitative surface, I tried an experiment. I placed the MBP on a tabletop surface where it's exhibited the malfunction. Then I used my other hand on the flat surface areas near the magic pad while using my right hand to manipulate the cursor. It appears that touching the casing with my other hand seemed to calm down the erratic behaviour. When I used only one hand, the erratic behaviour returned.
I'd searched several forums to no avail. No one seemed to have a solution or an explanation so I just lived with it.
However, by coincidence, I was experiencing what I believed was an unrelated issue. One of my USB ports was no longer responding to devices plugged into that port. While searching for a solution for the USB port, I stumbled across a post where the user suggested resetting the SMC. I'd never heard of that before this post. In his post, he mentioned that erratic Magic Pad behaviour could also be caused by the SMC.
He instructed to
1. Attach the MagSafe power cord
2. Power off the MacBook Pro
3. Press the L-Shift/Control/Option and Power button at the same time and hold.
4. Release them all at the same time
5. Then power on the MacBook Pro
Not only did my USB regain functionality, but it appears to have resolved my erratic Magic Pad behaviour. It now operates as it had done when new.
For reference, I'm using a MacBook Pro 13" with the Intel I3 processor and Lion.
I hope that helps somebody else as it did for me.

You may be having a hardware problem that you cannot resolve on your own. Nevertheless...
...hold down the command and R keys whilst booting to try to get to your Recovery partition. If you can, use Disk Utility to try to Verify your boot drive (usually named "Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). If the verification fails, try to repair your hard drive. If everything appears to be OK, restart.
If you can't get into your Recovery partition, your problem is likely hardware related. If so, keep your appointment and see what the Apple techs have to say.

If the normal restart doesn't work, and you restart on the recovery hard drive, from the choices of things to do window that appears, select Terminal, and in the Terminal window type: resetpassword and then press enter.  You will have a window with the users to choose from to reset the password.  Select the one you want and you will be able to reset the password, double entry of course.

  • My MacBook Pro will not boot up. I just get a grey screen with a "no entry" symbol and a spinning time icon. Any ideas as to how I can get over this issue?

Hi, I tried to start my MacBook Pro are 2 weeks and all I get is a grey screen with a grey no entry sign and a spinning timer. I have tried a reboot with shift cmd and v and it seems to be looping and referring to an external device. Only the power is attached. Can anyone provide advice on how to get past the grey screen? Many thanks.

Does the system automatically back up data?
    No.
As you can getto the Recovery partition, you can at least verify your disk using Disk Utility. If it reports that repairs are needed, you can try to repair but I've found that nearly 100% of the time repairing the disk inevitably FAILS. You should be prepared to, 1) buy a new drive for your machine and, 2) buy a good (see here) enclosure for your damaged drive to try to recover data.
After you get everything fixed, use at least two backup methods to keep your data secure. See Most commonly used backup methods.

  • Mackbook pro trackpad not responsive

Hi, today my macbook pro started to open windows on it's own. I've tried to use different mouse. I thought the problem is in trackpad, but it's same. It woudl open windows and move screen. Could someone please give me and advice? May be I should re-install Operating System? How can I do that? And what if the problem is not solved? Many thanks in advance.

Remove the batteries from the trackpad and test with the mouse. Any difference?

the keyboard not work but i have sount from button and backlight keyboard button

Sounds like you may have an issue with a stuck key on your keyboard, or maybe you're inadvertently performing a multitouch gesture.
First thing I'd try, is going to the trackpad settings and turning off multitouch gestures, even if just temporarily. Do things work as expected with that disabled? If yes, look through the different gestures and try to figure out which one you must be triggering. If not, I'd take it back to wherever you had it repaired, and get them to take a look at it. It sounds a bit like the keyboard is sending a constant signal from the "Option" key.

  • MacBook Pro trackpad not working correctly

The last few days my MacBook Pro track pad is not working properly. For instance the trackpad doesn't click (sometimes on left but not at all on the right side). The mouse clicks on things and drags them, basically is acting very annoying. I've press down on all the corners to make it work and can hear grit sounds under the  trackpad e.g. Crumbs, also tried going round all the pad with my nails but not making any difference. I haven't got AppleCare but I bought it January/February

    Hi rbarnes1121,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
From what I understand, your trackpad on you MacBook Pro can be erratic and perform commands that you are not meaning for it to perform. In this situation, I would recommend reading over the attached article to help troubleshoot this situation.

  • Macbook Pro Trackpad Not Working After Accident

I am a DJ and use my 2006 Macbook Pro to spin tunes. Recently, I did an outdoor gig where this big gush of wind knocked down one of speakers onto my head then fell onto the right side of my macbook pro.  =[
The rightside of the MBP (right above the CD drive) was a big valley in it now.  And for some odd reason my trackpad is stuck in permanent click down mode.
Even more odd.... I can click and double click right above the cd drive now?  What happened?  What can I do to remove the bend and fix the trackpad without it costing me a fortune?

You'll have to replace the case & whatever else is damaged. Go to an Apple store or AASP for an estimate. No, this will not be cheap.

  • HT203171 macbook pro trackpad troubles - any other tips?

recently my trackpad started acting up: two-finger scrolling and two- and three-finger tapping are not being detected properly. i recorded some of this in a video:
    http://youtu.be/L-fWYcrmTQg
though it cannot be seen in this demo, general use of the cursor is also a little haphazard--it occasionally jumps around the screen all willy nilly, see.
i've been digging around these forums and beyond getting the trackpad replaced, i'm not having any luck finding a solution. are there any other tips?

  • HT1338 My Macbook Pro did not come with apps like iMovie or GarageBand...why?

I just purchased the Macbook Pro after it had recently been updated in-store with OS X Lion, and today I also upgraded it to Mountain Lion. However, my macbook did not come with iLife, iMovie, or GarageBand. How do I go about fixing this? I don;t want to pay for them online via the app store, because they are supposed to come with the laptop.

iLife is no longer offered with the upgrade OS, a inconvenience for many.
iLife was never offered with an OS update. It comes with the purchase of the Mac.
If the Mac was updated by someone in the store to Lion, that means it was old enough that it came with probably Snow Leopard. There should be a set of grey DVDs that came with the Mac. The iLife applications were on one of the DVDs.

  • Macbook pro does not respond to bluetooth keyboard and mouse at login screen

i've seen this question floating around and i don't think i've found one that has been resolved. i'm hoping someone may have an answer by now.
i do not have this issue when i boot into windows 7 (bootcamp) the macbook pro responds to keyboard input and mouse input immediately on the windows 7 login screen. when i boot into mac, there is no response from either. i've seen suggestions of waiting for 30 secods. i still get nothing after waiting for over a minute.
what i do right now is use the built-in touch pad and keyboard of the macbook pro to get past the login screen. once i'm logged in, i can see that the bluetooth devices are not yet connected (the three dots that go across the bluetooth symbol at the top right of the screen are not yet there). then after a while, maybe about half a minute, the bluetooth keyboard and mouse are connected and i can use them normally.
it is not a big deal but it is very annoying.
i am using a logitech bluetooth mouse (v740) and an adesso bluetooth keyboard (wkb-4000bm). i also tried an azio bluetooth keyboard and had the same issue. all these keyboards are made for mac.
    thannks in advance.

just a correction, the keyboard and mouse don't always automatically reconnect once i'm logged in. most of the time i have to go click the bluetooth icon at the top right of my screen, select the mouse and then select "connect". i have to do the same to the keyboard.

  • My MacBook Pro will not start up.  I only get a grey screen with the spinning wheel.  No blue page appears and the grey screen remains.  Tried starting with the Shift key but ineffective as well.

Can't get my MacBook Pro to start up.  Have shut it down several times and tried restarting but all I get is a grey screen with the spinning icon.  Apple Support online suggested starting with power button followed immediately with the shift key.  Same results.  Also tried power button with shift key, command, and V.  Black screen appeared instead with lots of data language but still no starting.  This final page was suppose to result in an internal system check and restart but nothing happened and the black screen remains.Where do I go from here?  Scheduled for the Genius Bar tomorrow but would like to resolve this beforehand.

  • MacBook Pro does not start up. Shuts down after apple logo screen with a loading bar.

I booted my macbook pro up today and i noticed it took a while to do so. i also noticed that the fans were going fast and the macbook was getting hot during the start up process. When i went to the screen i also noticed a loading bar which i havent noticed before when starting up the mac. Once the loading bar has reached the end, the macbook just turns off and the same thing happens over and over. I am on mountain lion

I went to apple today and they told me that the hard drive has unmounted itself. They have my macbook right now and they said they're going to replace the wire that connects the hard drive to the logic board and see if this solves the issue. If it doesn't work they will replace the existing 250GB hard drive in my macbook with a 500GB as they no longer make that size hard drives (cost of £130 for the replacement). The problem is that i dont have my macbook backed up so will there be anyway to get data off the od hard drive?

    Apple doesn't have a trade-in policy.
You can sell your MBA to someone else and buy a new MBP from Apple.
