HT203175 I keep getting the Itunes library cannot be saved.  A folder was specified instead of a file.

I connected my ipad to my computor (Windows Home Premium 7) and Itunes would not open.  I have restored from a seperate back up however I tunes keeps throwing up the above in a window as an error.  I tried uninstalling itunes and re-installing and it still would not work.  Anyone got any ideas as to what is going on?
Thanks

I've encountered this same problem on multiple occasions. Sometimes it will happen for days at a time, then stop for months, then start happening again without rhyme or reason.
This last bout has been the most severe, as my extensive library of movies (one one external HDD) and music (on another external HDD) wouldn't show up in iTunes. After reimporting and losing the library file again I started digging a bit deeper into solutions.
I'm a few hours (hopefully it will stick) and many changes into reconstructing a new iTunes library file after having found a useful solution:
http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/73878/the-itunes-library-file-cannot-be -saved-a-folder-was-specified-instead-of-a-fi (I don't know if you saw the reply to your thread on stackexchange...)
I tried to choose my old .itl when prompted; it wasn't recognized. I then created a new library in a new folder (iTunes 1, as suggested) and repeated the "choose library" step. The new file was recognized. In the past I would change my media folder location in iTunes preferences depending on whether I was importing music or movies. I've decided to leave that at the default location, but have unchecked the copy to media folder option in preferences. I'm hopeful that manually managing where the media are stored and where iTunes looks for them will permanently solve the problem.
Take all of this with a grain of salt.... I hope it helps. Let me know if any of my steps are unclear or if you have any questions.

  • Error: the itunes library file cannot be saved a folder was specified instead of a file

This started popping up after a forced quit because the program was hanging. The library seems to be writing files from CDs to my dedicated external drive and adding them to the library.  The added songs appear and play after program is shut down and reboots. Have repaired disk permissions in disk utilitity but it doesn't seem to fix the error message. Other threads discuss the problem in Windows but not Mac.  Any thoughts?

After trying a few other remedies, the tech at Apple Care suggested I reinstall Lion.
    Here's the article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mchlp1599.html
I have not had the error message since, even after importing about a dozen CDs and burning a couple playlists.
This seems to be the fix.

  • HT1926 I am getting error msg: "The iTunes library file cannot be saved. a folder ws specified instead of a file."

Reinstalled iTunes after deleting previous install in specified order and removing dated listings from registry.
    Downloaded iTunes and reinstalled.
iTunes would not start and gave me msg "The itunes library.itl file cnnot be found or created. The default location is in the iTunes folder in the Music folder"
I dragged iTunes Library.itl file to iTunes folder in Music folder
Itunes started but after a bit it presented the msg: "The iTunes libery file cannot be saved. A folder was specified instead of a file"
Looking for how I correct this issue...   Thanks!!

  • The itunes library cannot be saved. You do not have enough access privelages for this operation

Hello, the new problem is this, the error message in the title of this discussion keeps appearing "The itunes library cannot be saved. You do not have enough access privelages for this operation"....I've read suggestions on access privelages but they are all granted to me (my admin and user accounts) and I have full control over itunes, yet the message STILL appears everytime I re-open itunes. Does anyone know any solutuions? I'm on 64 bit Windows 7.

I am intrigued by this as it comes up from time to time without a solution.
It is very odd if iTunes opens withoout creating a library file, it should create an empty file i.e. one with no music in it, are you absolutely sure that it does not create a new iTunes Library.itl? - It really should open at all if it can't do that.
Normally when iTunes can't create a library file it refuses to open and gives a message "Disk is locked" or "iTunes folder cannot be found". This is due to a registry problem in which the location of the My Music folder is not correctly set and iTunes uses this to determine where the iTunes folder should be.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302398
If iTunes won't open when you remove the library file - it's worth giving that a go.
Was iTunes able to create a library file and culd you add music to it when you created a new user account? That shows whether the issue is a user specific issue or a more general problem. There are a couple of other things I am wondering about.

Hi, I keep getting an error message saying "the itunes library cannot be saved. an unknown error occurred. (-50). Any ideas on how to stop this appearing? Thanks!

Error -50 is a very unhelpful generic communications error with a number of possible causes.  Something between the drive to which you are downloading and the drive from which it is all coming is not working correctly, which probably leaves several hundred options.

  • The itunes library cannot be saved.  An unknown error occurred (-50)  What do I do to get rid of this warning.  I get it when I try to sync my phone or ipad

I am running 64 bit windows operating system.  I upgraded to iOS6 for iphone 4s and ipad II.  Since that upgrade I have been getting this error message

I've updated windows thinking it was a compatibility issue.  Uninstalled itunes and reinstalled with the Kaspersky off.
    What is going on.  Thoughts?
and if you click okay it keeps coming back for 3 or 4 pop ups before going away

You need to be very careful which project you open in which version.
For 2014 make sure its on 2014.1 build 81.

  • Getting Error: iTunes Library cannot be saved?

    I have an iPhone 4.
All of sudden I am getting an error when I sync my iPhone 4 using iTunes with my MBP.
The error box says:  "The iTunes Library cannot be saved.  An unknown error occured (-54)"
The syc seems to work, but the error message pops up continually.
I just upgraded the other day to IOS 6.01.  It was fine yesterday.  Error started this AM. Could it be the upgrade?
    Has anybody gotten this message?

    == Error -54 ==
From an OS9 reference, error -54 is a software lock on a file or a permissions error. (Some of the old codes still apply to OSX although there is no formal list of OSX error codes.)
First, try simply restarting your computer.

  • "The iTunes Library file cannot be saved.  A folder was specified instead of a file."  How do I fix?

My buddy set me up with the Aiport Timecapsule with 500G of music.  I linked iTunes to my MacPro (took a looong time) now I keep getting "The iTunes Library file cannot be saved.  A folder was specified instead of a file."  I have the most up to date iTunes.  I'm not sure that I set up the library the "proper way" but don't want to spend another day or 2 to reload.  How do I fix what ever I did wrong, or get rid of the message?
    Thanx

  • The iTunes Library cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-50)

I updated iTunes from 7.2 to 7.3 using Software Update and all went well except for one thing, now when I launch iTunes it rebuilds the iTunes library each time I launch iTunes. The other thing is that once it rebuilds the library it displays a warning; "The iTunes Library cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-50).
I downloaded the standalone updater to no avail. I have also repaired permissions using disk utility - no luck.
    Background info.
A week ago or so, while I still had iTunes 7.2 I cleaned all my user and system caches, ran all the maintenance scripts and repaired permissions. I used MainMenu, a third party app that lives in the menubar, to perform these functions and faithfully followed all the instructions to restart once or twice depending on the routine and closing all my apps accordingly while doing these maintenance routines etc.
I noticed one thing after this, my iTunes icon had turned into a generic app icon. Knowing iTunes 7.3 was a slated release this Friday I knew the icon issue would resolve itself after the update from 7.2.
What can I do to fix this? Please help.

I somehow got through the -50 error but a few days later podcasts when downloading, would crash iTunes 7.3 altogether.
There was a post here somewhere and I apologise to the poster in advance but I am unable to relocate it.
Here is the solution that was proposed and it seems to have worked for me.
Read the following in its entirety before proceeding:
1 The first thing I did was unsubscribe to all my podcasts by selecting them all and clicking unsubscribe at the bottom of the iTunes window.
    2 Quit iTunes
3 Navigate to YourHomeFolder/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Podcasts and move the Podcasts folder to your desktop or some other convenient location.
4 Open iTunes and re-subscribe to all your podcasts.**
5 Once all the podcasts finish downloading navigate to the Podcasts folder sitting on your desktop and move its' contents back to the folder you originally moved them out of. If you had setup the iTunes preferences to keep all your podcasts after they download be careful not to overwrite items as you move them back from the desktop/Podcasts folder to the new Podcasts folder.*
**In my case, the list of podcasts in the iTunes window got kind of messy, I mean some podcasts displayed the GET button when even though they had already downloaded or I already had them on my system and other small things like that - this was the result of re-subscribing. You can select those that you don't want to GET and simply delete them.
*You may have to move one podcast folder's contents at a time, again be careful not to overwrite. If you return things carefully you will have no problems.
iTunes 7.3 has behaved perfectly ever since.
I hope this helps. If my instructions are confusing please chime back.
By the way, command (apple key) clicking any of the collapse triangles both in the finder and in iTunes will expand or collapse all items, this will come in handy as you define anything that might have gone funny after re-subscribing.
