HT203176 cursor freezes on mac osx 10.8.5

cursor freezes on mac osx 10.8.5 have to re-launch finder to regain control, using wireless mouse.
This happens at various times but more noticable after wakeup.
Any ideas?

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

  • Mouse/program freezes in Mac OSX Mavericks

I recently updated my 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 iMac to Mac OSX Mavericks (8GB RAM).
I'm using an Apple wireless bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
I'm now getting frequent freezes. The cursor can be moved but I am unable to write or click on any window. Only way to resolve this issue is a hard reboot.
Additionally, programs (Safari, Microsoft Office) sometimes freeze/stall with the spinning beach ball.
Overall the system is much more sluggish.
    Any suggestions ?
I'm wondering if these problems are related to syncing services,  e.g., Adobe Updater (really annoying when it interrupts/blocks workflow daily with another update check) or iCloud and Dropbox (check mark indicates up to date) -  although superficially I don't see them active at the time of the freeze.

    Hi farpelix,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your Mac is unresponsive and you think it may be related to software you've installed, try testing by booting into safe mode and creating a test user:
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
If your system is responsive is responsive safe mode, this usually means OS X is fine, and the issue is caused by conflicting software in your user account.
Next, see if it behaves normally in a new user account. The steps in this article also apply to creating a new user in Mavericks:
OS X Mountain Lion: Create a new user account

  • Indy freezes on Mac OSX 10.6.3

Any know issues so far with InDesign CS4 running on latest Mac OSX 10.6.3?
A user had informed me that he just upgraded from Leopard 10.5.x to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 today, all other Adobe applications running well, except InDesign.
InDesign launches alright, and even able to create a new document, but once the user clicks on any icon within the document, the Mac beach ball spins forever, user have no options but to force-quit InDesign!
Apparently resetting preferences didn't fix the problem.

This is a good point Bob, If no issues were reported so far on any conflicts between 10.6.3 and InDesign CS4, then it is most likely this particular user need to have a fresh and clean Snow Leopard installation… Thanks
Eugene, user says he updated to latest Indesign version.

  • Emac freezes on mac osx screen after upgrade

I recently bought the new keyboard and downloaded the upgrade through the apple website. My System update started at the same time and it upgraded the most recent iphoto and osx powerpc update. Im running tiger on my emac and it was fine till I re-started. When it starts back up, the screen goes to the screen with the grey apple and then proceeds to the screen where the chrome mac osx is about to start up but it just sits there. I tried booting up with safe mode but it doesn't do anything and I tried starting it up doing the shift/command/option/delete and that doesn't do anything as well.
Did any of the updates cause this problem and if so, how do I get into my computer to fix this if it won't let me in with all the reboot options. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    M

Same boat as miQ: This eMac (1.42GHz, 512MB RAM) hangs at blue screen after Apple logo/gear and before startup progress bar. Tried reformat/zero then install Panther, but machine will not boot from Panther install disk (produces broken Apple logo and hangs). Erase/reformat and install Tiger = OK, but machine only boots in SafeMode (normal boot = blue screen). Started with 10.4.0 and updated to 10.4.11 by restarting in SafeMode with updates, no change. Disk Utility = all good (in SafeMode).
Lost audio somewhere along the way, too: No startup tone, Sound Prefs say no output device detected, mute is checked and unavailable, sound menu vanishes from menubar when clicked. (Speakers are built-in and connected, just as they were when we started.)
Boots in SafeMode, works as expected, but normal startup hangs at blue screen, 100% of the time. While 512MB RAM isn't much these days (2x256 verified), it should be enough for a fresh install and OS only, no? Firmware issue? (Won't boot from Panther or OS9.) Boots into Startup Manager (w/option key) and shows internal HDD: Then, Apple logo, gear, and blue screen, as usual. Goes to sleep eventually, then refuses to wake. Logic board? Sure acts like a software issue.....
Any suggestions/ideas/clues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    Mike

  • What do I need to do to stop constant Firefox freezes on Mac OSX? Safari doesn't have the same problem, so it can't be the computer.

My IMac, using OS X 10.6.6, works well and quickly - until I use Firefox. Almost every command I give leads to a freeze that lasts from a few seconds to a couple of minutes - sometimes with and sometimes without the whirling beachball. This is true no matter what website I'm on. I've used Firefox for years and never had this problem before. What can I do to fix this problem?

I have an Idea for you.. Stop using MAC! I'm a PC user and I've never had any problem with firefox or any other program being "incompatible." Can you guess why? Because people design programs like firefox and pretty much everything else around WINDOWS.

  • Adobe Photoshop 9 Freezes in Mac OSX

I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 that constantly freezes on my iMac OSX 10.7.2 platform. It happens while performing different tasks, ie. downloading pictures, e-mailing pictures, editing pictures. In fact the program freezes and then has to be forced quit. Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

Okay, the first thing I would do is shut down the autoanalyzer. Go to the organizer preferences>media analysis and turn off everything but face recognition.
To repair permissions go to Applications>utilities>disk utility and click the name of your hard drive in the list on the left, then click repair permissions. It takes a while and don't freak about all the messages scrolling by in the window while it's working. They don't matter at all unless it tells you it's unable to complete the entire permissions repair.

  • CURSOR DISAPPEARS IN MAC OSX 10.6.8

    Using FF 24.0.
Cursor disappeared from screen; cannot activate mouse and keyboard and had to manually cold reboot.
Was having a similar problem in Safari.
Please advise step-by-step how to resolve.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.
*Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

  • 2011 Mac Mini, 10.8.3, SSD - System CPU at constant 10%, frequent 0.5 sec cursor freezes

Hi.  I have a Mid-2011 Mac Mini with 8GB of RAM. I have an SSD installed in it as the primary drive, along with another internal 2TB drive and an external USB 2TB drive for media. This machine is mostly used as a media server and player.  It's been running Mountain Lion since I bought it (refurb) last year.  I upgraded to 10.8.3 as soon as that came out, and was running for a while without any problems. This evening, though, I started to notice some problems.
The main issue is that the CPU (well, one core) seems to be constantly under load. Under Activity Monitor I'm watching the system load (but not user load) hover between about 8% and 12%, all of the time.  But looking at the program list, I don't see anything taking up more than about 2% of CPU, and that is taken up by Activity Monitor itself.
The annoying way that this manifests itself in the UI is that if I'm just randomly moving the cursor around in a circle, I can watch it periodically hang and freeze for about half of a second every 3-4 seconds or so. Meanwhile, everything else on the system also seems to freeze up for about half a second at the same time, which makes watching Netflix extremely irritating. (With Netflix the sound plays as normal, but the video freezes briefly every few seconds - I verified this in both Firefox and Chrome so I doubt it's a browser thing.)
I've already tried some troubleshooting steps myself. (None of this has worked yet.)
I saw a lot of messages in console about "mdworker deny mach-lookup com.apple.ls.boxd", which googling around for led me to this page; per the instructions there I booted into safe mode, waited a bit and rebooted, and now I don't see those messages any more. (I didn't mess with the sandbox.sb file, about which, really? Apple implemented this in Scheme or something?)  Just to be on the safe side, though, I disabled Spotlight indexing with sudo mdutil -a -i off.
I opened Disk Util and ran a verify on all three disks, no errors.  I found one or two permissions that needed repairing on the startup SSD and repaired them.  The problem persisted.  I also cleared out my caches with Maintenance while I was at it.
As a side note, even when I rebooted in safe mode, I was still seeing the same behavior (periodic half-second mouse freezes, system CPU averaging a constant 10% or so in Activity Monitor).
I also spent some time reading this other thread which looked like it had some very useful advice (unlike that poster, though, my Spotlight processes aren't crashing).  So I went ahead and followed Linc Davis's first set of instructions in that thread.  Here's what I've got for steps 1 and 2.
    1. Activity monitor
Highest-CPU process is Activity Monitor at about 1-2% CPU
    CPU: User 1%, system ~10%, idle ~90%
System memory: Page outs 0, swap used 0 bytes
Disk activity: Reads in/sec 0, Writes out/sec 0 (these infrequently spike up to about 40 or 50 max)
    2. System log
I put up a gist for this here.  It's my last 50 messages or so, probably some are coming from the most recent reboot.  I can see the "IOHIDSystem cursor update overdue. Resending" messages which I presume are linked to my cursor freezes, but nothing else looks obviously suspicious to me.  The stuff about "menucracker" is down to MenuMeters; I uninstalled it and rebooted at one point just to check, but it didn't seem to make a difference so I reinstalled it.
As far as kexts go, the only one I had that wasn't Apple was SoundFlower. I actually need that one, I use it to stream files from Plex, but I went ahead and uninstalled it anyways, and it didn't make a difference.  My launchd lists start up sickbeard, sabnzbd, and plex, but I've manually quit all of those and the problem persists, so I highly douby any of them are to blame.
Any advice greatly appreciated.  Is there a better way that I can see what exactly is causing the high system CPU load, like can I list processes by number of kernel calls or something?  I did try top and ps but I didn't see anything obviously different from Activity Monitor in their output.

Nope, I don't have a "/Users/charon/Library/Mobile Documents" directory, let alone anything underneath it. Is that like an iCloud thing or something?  I tend to avoid the Apple-supplied services when I can (I don't use iTunes either unless I can help it).
As an update, as of about two days later this problem seems to have solved itself. Possibly sleeping and waking did something to it (though that seems unlikely given how many times I rebooted), or else there was just some long-*** kernel process that finally worked itself out.  But my system CPU is back down to normal and the cursor freezes are gone.
    ??? it is a mystery! ???

  • Cursor freezes on startup mac mini

Cursor freezes at upper left corner of screen.  Using my new Mac Mini. The one with the least amount of storage and most recent Mac OS. Occurs when using third party usb keyboard or Microsoft wireless keyboard and Logitech wireless trackball.  Same problem when using OEM Mac wireless mouse. Haven't tried it yet using OEM Mac wireless keyboard.  Have to buy one.

Which version of iMovie are you trying to run?
I just updated to latest iMovie 2.1.2 on my iPad Mini with iOS 8.3 and I am in, all video/photos show up. Perhaps a troublesome video clip downloaded from internet?

  • Cursor freezes completely each time with mac os x 10.6.8

    Hello, mac friends,
I have a Macbook Pro with 8Gb and upgraded from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 recently.
All was well for some but since one week, the cursor freezes when I use either Safari or Mozilla, and and basically the whole system jams.
I cannot do force quit. Unplugging my mouse (logitech) or just using the trackpad works and I simply need to do a forced close down with the
on button in the right upper corner.
I have tried a PRAM reset, a Disk Utility with repair disk permissions and disk repair, and using Disk Utility through the Installer Disk but nothing
seems to help. I have upgraded both Safari and Mozilla, but still the same issue crops up.
What is wisdom here? Downgrade from 10.6.8 to a earlier version? Upgrade to LION? or set up a new user or admin account? I have seen various
threads on the internet but never a definite answer and someone content that his/her problem with the cursor freeze was resolved.
Please let me know - I think quite a number of other mac users have the same issue.
    Thank you,
    Saab96

I have a similar problem with my early 2009 Macbook Pro 10.6.8 and have been working on it for several weeks. Something is cuasing my mouse (USB or Logitech Wireless) to stop functioning normally. At first I thought it only happened after the Mac was asleep but it just happened again while I was using it.
I've cleaned house as far as possible potentially offending programs including getting rid of all browsers except safari.
Repaired Disk Permissions, Veryifeid the Hard Disk which had some bad sectors after 3.5 years of use. So I replaced the drive with a Seagate 750GB drive. Did a Time Machine recovery from a point in time prior to the problem ever occuring.
Relentless searched through the Console logs each time it happens but it does not seem to point to one thing.
Crash Reporter does not even pick it up and create a report.
I ran Memtest for hours two times and can find nothing wrong with the memory.
    Reset the SMC
Reset the PRAM which if I understand it correctly also resets the NVRAM?
Yesterday I did a fresh install of Snow Leopard using the Archive and Install function to create a new system wothout nuking the drive and my USer/networksettings etc.
Ran updates on the system to get it back to 10.6.8
And it happened again. I clicked on a window and the "Select" function just hung so no mater where I moved my mouse it kept selected everything. It would not close windows or perform any mouse like functions.
The command-quit function worked this time and I can always open & run the Force Quit window and shutdown. It'sl like the machine is doing everything except mouse functions.
The "crash" does seem to affect my Parallels 8 virtual machine as I am able to quit W7 and shut down parallels normally.
I have over 2GB of free RAM out of the 4GB installed
    Temperature Monitors seem normal.
I'm really starting to think its hardware....
I"m going to hard wipe the drive and do a clean install of Snow Leopard next and not install any third party programs whatsoever. But before I waste any more time on this if anyone has any ideas on this I would appreciate hearing them. Apple support has been giving me ideas and veyr helpful as usual but this isn't fixed and I can't live with it.
This machine never crashed. But since the last week in August it does this constantly at least a couple time a day.
    Thank you for any assistance.

  • Firefox v15 and up cause my computer (MAC OSX 10.8.2) to freeze for about 30 seconds every 15-30 seconds and forces me to turn it off with the power button

Firefox v15 and up cause my computer (MAC OSX 10.8.2) to freeze for about 30 seconds every 15-30 seconds and forces me to turn it off with the power button. It only causes this after I have opened Firefox, my computer runs fine before opening Firefox. I have uninstalled Firefox and cleared my personal settings. I have installed future updates (16 and 17) and have run into the same issue. I cannot pull any information on RAM or CPU usage because when it happens it makes my computer unusable. Unfortunately I need to use FF for work and can't. I have tried the different responses on the forums to reduce the amount of RAM and CPU usage with no change in performance.

  • MacBook pro late 2011 i7 8GB 750GB MAC OSX Lion freezes on wake up

    Hi,
My MacBook pro late 2011 i7 8GB 750GB MAC OSX Lion (up to date) 1 week old freezes on wake up.
Plugged on power or not, same issues.
    No apps running.
When it goes to sleep itself i wake it up it freezes for few seconds
When i put it to sleep mode same issue.
    With the lid same issue...
I already try setting up the sleep mode from 3 to 0 with terminal command it didn't work.
Can it be an hardware issue ?
    Any ideas ?

Dear TheSmokeMonster, Dear all MacBook pro 13'' late 2011 users,
    Here is the update.
As TheSmokeMonster mentionned (above) they asked me to reinstall MAC OSX Lion by shutting down the computer and holding cmd + R while switching it off. Then you choose the language and you are good to go for a looooonngg 4GB download (it took me 8hours yeah chinese ADSL :-/ )
Lion reinstalled itself automatically and restarted. - it did not solve the issue.
I called Apple Care again and we try to run the hardware diagnostic by restarting the computer and holding D. FYI do not try it as this command does not work on the new version of macbook pro.
Here is the intersting part! As the Apple Care already did everything they could to help me. We booked an appointment the my local Apple Store in Shanghai (a real one )
The Genius remake again the SMC and PRAM reset - same issues and he also tried to boot Lion from his own external hard drive - Same issues. So we started to think that it was a Hardware problem.
We tried another MBP 13'' late 2011 (last hardware update) in the shop to see if it works properly and it DOESN'T!
Yeah you heard me. I have been trying more than 10 MBP 13'' (2.4Ghz 4GB and 2.8Ghz 4GB) put them asleep and they all freeze on wake up!! it also does it on Mac book air 13'' it seems to be a global issue on all the new 13'' machines. A compatibility problem between Lion and the new hardware architecture of the 13'' ? just my guess.
Anyway FYI this issue doesn't occur on MBP 15 and 17"
I was just amazed by this global problem so was the genuis. We could not find any solutions cause even a replacement one will have the same problem. They told me i could change for a 15" but i had to go back to the Apple shop where i bought it which is 2000Kms away not really convenient So i file the cas and i took my MBP 13'' back with me.
They will contact me later for further explanation.
    To be continued.
